Well, after yesterday’s little amble – ~30 miles of ‘XC pub ride’which amounted to mainly bridle paths etc through woods, Kinver Edge etc which had its fair amount of mud, roots and the usual stuff you expect, I can say the DHF 2.5 was like nothing else I’ve come across

I’m running the tyre on my rigid Stooge, which definately has a rear weight bias, so front pressure can be ran super low. The carcass is uber stiff, and it took a while to find the psi I liked – which was pretty low – to the point where I was feeling the odd rim strike (down steps). Until that sweet spot the front was too harsh, but once dialed and I relaxed into it, all was good

The tyre looks pretty formidable. OTT for ‘XC’? who cares. Grip levels are immense and you can really lean hard into the tyre. Rolling seems fine – again as a result of the lightweight front I guess

All in all I’m well chuffed

I’m out on it (front of the Stooge) tomorrow, I’ll report back 🙂

Have a 2.4 Nobby Nic out back, so decent combo I think

    I don’t do strava (or TV) 😉

How would I get that route?

Got the Minion today and mounted it up to ~18psi

It will stretch a bit I’m presuming, but not that much more, so 2.45″ by my reckoning

Haven’t been out on it yet, but the whole thing looks and feels more aggressive and sturdy – talk about sipes! 🙂

Here’s a pic, with the Hans Dampf underneath for direct comparison

Which version have you gone for?

    3c Exo max 2.5

Don’t show me any more tyres – I’ve managed to stop buying almost any for a couple of years now

The essential bit of knowledge – so basically if you want to remove the OE fit grease, you need to need to use a decent degeaser first, then wash that off, otherwise the new lube wont penetrate to the rollers

It will also build your legs up a bit.

Do they need building up?? 🙂

The Hans performed well today – needed to keep dropping more and more psi though till I thought it too low

Got one rim strike down some steps so thought I’m there at that 🙂

Looking forward to trying the DHF – next day tyres got it sent out same day 🙂

    ^^ blimey – that looks a posh one 🙂

You can get half a bike in that one can’t you?

But njeee – if the inside of the plates and the links are left to get black, your cassette and chainring ends up black and gunged

This is how my stuff looks all the time – you just can’t do that any other way

    I know he is… BUT

It is possible to get all of the original grease off – let’s say before fitting for the first time – and then every time you clean your bike (and drive train) you get back to spotless shiny – you can’t do that if that stuff is left on

I think anymore than 1K and you’re into issues – riders in front with lesser lights will not be able to see.

Car drivers will be totally blinded at will hate you and karmically hate all the rest of MTBers

Don’t remove it, it’s a very effective lubricant.

But your chain/cassette & front ring turn into a thick black gunge of a mess in a few rides

The amount of folk I see – roadies too – with the black gunge is something which just doesn’t sit comfortably

I don’t think it comes down to just lumens (although you need a few)

My bar light is 1200 and that makes for daylight

My mate runs a 200 and that is ample – go figure

So, is it just an expensive (and needless) way of cleaning your chain?

I keep my chains pretty spotless I have to say, using water bio lube such as Pro Link Gold which ‘washes’ as it gets dirty (really works)

It’s the thick greasy gunge which comes on a new chain I would like to get off, and I don’t think one of these cleaners would do that anyway – you would need to degrease it differently

Thanks everyone – gone for the 2.5 DHF

Last night I mounted a Nans D on the Rabbit Hole…

Profile looked good, and a quick measure read 2.6″ across the carcass – pretty good eh

I think everyone will agree with you, it should be ‘open’

Or more to the point, why on earth is it ‘closed’

So I took the Knard off today and fitted up a Hans Dampf…

I half expected the profile to be too square on the 50mm Rabbit Hole rim, but it looks ok

The Knard first, then the HD, coming in at 2.6″

I’m wondering what these tyres would be like on a 50mm Rabbit Hole…?

I remember reading somewhere (here I think) someone setting up a Hans D on a 50mm – surely that would be too square a profile??

Anyone considering running a Minion 2.5 on their Stooge?

This one on ebay seems OK

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Professional-Digital-Ultrasonic-Cleaner-Ultra-Sonic-Timer-Cleaning-Basket-2L-/231280157675?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35d95f23eb

Here’s some blurb from the listing – not sure what a ‘soft alkaline detergent is though’

General Cleaning: Use just plain water.
Enhanced Cleaning: Add a few drops of ammonia, or 5-10ml of soft alkaline detergent or other cleaning solution into the water if the item to be cleaned is smeary or not cleaned for a long time.
Partly Cleaning: for large item, clean the items with open lid. If the whole items need to be cleaned, you may clean one half in one cycle and the other half in another cycle.
Don’t start the machine without liquids?water or otherwise?in the tank.
Don’t use hard objects to strike the bottom of cleaning tank. At least ten minutes cleaning interval is recommended.Do clean the tank
    regularly.
Don’t use corrosive or flammable cleaning liquids in the unit.

So, a 2l capacity unit is ample for most bike parts – chains & cassettes etc?

What is the ‘cleaning’ fluid you use?

    Cheers

Some 29er’s have the super short chainstays (eg The Stooge)

As such they ‘ride off the back axle’ BMX stylee, so lifting the front wheel is done by just thinking it as is the flickability

I think Mr Stooge has put glow in the dark in that blue

Oh, sorry just time warped to the 29er debate… yawn. Carry on

To many beef cobs made it hard work getting home?

That, and the gallon I drank on the way round 🙂

Something good about being a bit pissed pedaling – makes you ride harder, faster and looser

My Fat Boy (large) is 27lbs

Very basic upgrades – tubeless, stem, bars, seatpost (OEM was very heavy), saddle, dropped front mech and extra chainring for single

Rolls faster than a mates 29er on 2,3 tyres

As of now, they are the ultimate clown bike though
