So as long as it rides OK and doesn’t slip, it’s OK?

I have long back and the Regatta – see other thread – fits well, as does the Alpkit

Blimey – that’s quite amazing for ~6 months use

I used an Uno for a while and it got well worn – I guess that was running a 1×9 though so having a straight chain line is obviously much much better

    Thanks for posting

    Good to hear.

I’ve ran the square taper cranks on and off and have always thought them not only well stiff enough, but good lookers too

I suppose I’m more interested in the Uno ring and how that has been for you – tooth wear particularly

    I ditched mine for a narrow/wide chainring – perfect

    😯 Ah, yes, I do mean rS-8…

Great to hear as I’ve just gone through the pain of ordering one to use SS

Wished I had known the RS-8 has a different offset to the square taper stuff I used a while back so all that stuff – including the tools to get the lockring off is all different…

How long have you been running that set-up? How durable is it proving to be?

    Cheers

    Middleburn’s anyone?

    Good find Stu, thanks.

However, that is the one I have…

Just picked up a nice used set Middleburn RX-8 cranks and spider I want to use as SS on the Stooge and want to get the spider off.

The RX-8 has a different lockring to the square taper ones I’ve previously used – the lug slots are quite a bit deeper and there is a radius before the lugs even start

All of which mean the lugs of the tool need to be longer

Like me Stu, looks like we’ve been inflating tyres the longwinded way 😆

To get a fat tyre up first go is batter than a compressor

I wonder how the pump would fair with fat tyres?

Bike Radar give it 4.5 stars – that’s pretty much the most they give anything

Shame about the gauge range being too wide – most mtb tyres don’t go much above 30 psi

That’s what I said – Evans wanted to see the whole back. Stupid, although I could see why

    bonesetter

He bought the bike from Evans which is too far to get to when sorting out stuff.

When things started braking he contacted them, and Evans aid bring the bike in.

The first instance was a front brake seal busted. He ended up buying a SLX front

Then the KMC chain broke. We lashed it up and SS it back home which damaged the cassette

The plastic chainkeeper chewed up and then dropped off somewhwere

BB went (GXP which is pretty crap I know)

Bike was bought toward the end of this summer

Paint has come off quite easily

All that said, the geo is good, he has changed the bars for wider, seatpost for lay back, tyres for condition specific (all mainly out of my stock I have to say;) )and the bike rides well and he is really pleased with it

He knew the component parts were cheap and was prepared to upgrade them as they failed

He’s has seen only moderate trail use

    Mate has the One

He’s needed to change a lot of components as they fall-off, brake, leak, disappear

    Otherwise good bike 🙂

Go have pricematched on the two ossasions I’ve been in recently

In fact, 1st time assistant went over to internet and found an even cheaper price – can’t fault that can you?

OK the down ones might be more labour intensive, but how about the ploy ones? They aren’t I’m guessing, but can be similar money

Well, it amazes me how some of this ‘outdoor’ stuff sells for so much money

Point in fact – ‘puffer jackets’ like Ram down jackets selling for £150 and more. I mean really, how much do these cost to Chinese produce??

If you can get clever marketing behind you, you can sell snow to an eskimo

Having said that, a smartphone can be very useful whilst in store for reviews and online pricing. The Vango Latitude 400 bag I bought looked every bit as good as the Ram whatever priced at £250

Socks – yeah, got some North Wave Merino wool 4 Season Walking Socks. XL. Nice and stretchy, warm and look very well made – can hardly think I will be using them for biking now 🙂

Also picked up 2 pairs of Go’s ‘Heat Trap Socks’ which I haven’t tried yet

Just been into Go Outdoors and bought a pair of Northwave merino wool 4 season walking sock for £8 reduced

Nice and stretchy and very warm

Might want to wear them for best now though 🙂

The same Cost, weight, ride quality arguments apply to the use of Carbon in just about any type of bike, a fat bike will be no different and will derive the same relative benefits as a XC HT, DH, Road bike, made from carbon rather than Aluminium etc…

I will say this though; IMO Fat bikes are really only viable now due to all the little accumulated developments from the last ~20 odd years of general bicycle development,

If you had tried to construct the equivalent of a modern Fatbike in the Mid 90’s it would either have weighed much more or cost significantly more…

As much as it’s a “Back to basics” type niche, modern, cost efficient frame, rim, tyre construction is what makes fat bikes an attractive proposition hence they have become more popular in recent years.

The fact that you can get a ~30lb Fat bike for £1K or under now is quite something IMO…

As with anything making it out of Carbon probably starts you down the road of “diminishing returns” but I still think Ti offers relatively worse cost Vs functional benefits, if such things actually bother you…

    This makes very good sense

And although I could never justify the extra for CF, I could for this –

    21.5 lb’s all-in 🙂

    bonesetter

    Fair enough I suppose

But while I can see the advantages of CF on a road bike with 120 psi connected to tarmac, a fat bike with huge squidgy ~10 psi tyres I’m not so sure of (again, not having ridden one)

I was reading a Bike Radar review of the Beargrease which said their medium sized full bike (no pedals) was 28.75lb

My Fat Boy (alu with CF fork, and pedals) is 30lb dead – nothing special on build, just tubeless, and bigger tyres too

With £1500 difference in price I can’t see that being justified, ‘stiffer’ or more ‘comfi’ too
