your local spesh dealer will have (or can get) a freehub list, with pictures so it’s easy to get them to order the right one. They are a bit poop but a new one is about £30 to order. It’s a formula type and either needs an 11mm hex or a 12mm hex (an 8-11mm adapter comes with)

merida made them for ages, that’s why there was a carrera LRS range and magnesium frames and all that. Then the Strongarm(I think) factory started making them and we had copies of kona faux bars and clump style tubing

You could tell which bikes were made in the same factory – differences on the boxes, same stock parts, that sort of thing. For a time kona/carrera/some apollo all had the same hangers and some carrera frames were VERY similar to kona. Wouldn’t be surprised if Boardman are the same

When I worked there, we had 2 or 3 ‘half decent if that’s your budget’ apollos, alright alu frame, 21 speed shimano megarange group, suntour fork. You could buy a much worse bike for £150.

Depends which one your kona needs. My 03 kikapu was the same hanger as the Mrs’ Apollo charm. It’ll be a stock template dropout from the factory.

as above, good builder and good spokes are important. I’d make sure the your rim is doublewall and stiff too. I’ve got a 32hole 7 speed nexus hub which I built onto one of these[/url] (DT comp, 3 cross) about a year ago. I’ve got a bit of weight on you and often carry a 10+ kilo pannier but the wheel has been perfect, I’e had to tweak it about 2 or 3 times since and is still going strong (3400 miles in)

Spesh Roubaix. Will do all the smoothy stuff, plus lifetime guarantee. The current entry level model is based on the SL2 S-works from 3 years ago

If it’s carbon you’ll need the one James posted. Spesh call it a mindset (specify 1 1/8 as they call the larger roubaix one mindset too)
They’re £30 including topcap and sfn and spacers and all that stuff. Any Spesh dealer will be able to order them from Spesh, although it’s worth checking they have the tool to fit.

It’ll be a 6mm or 8mm from memory, 12 or 13 nut on the other side

Is the chain 9 speed or 7/8?

If it’s not worn chain/sprocket could be bent hanger or limit screw out. That combo of running gear wouldn’t skip if set up correctly, although gears would obviously be missing.

There’s one or two XL stumpjumpers left, and plenty of Camber 29ers. Any Spesh dealers nearby?

I’m on Three PAYG, with a £15 top up you can buy a bundle that gives you 300 minutes, 3000 texts and unlimited data. I’ve even used the phone as a wireless hotspot which was included in the normal data allowance. Scarily good. Obviously you’d need to buy a phone..

Avid hydraulic brakes (anything whatsoever to do with any of them – one of the worst bike products avalable IMO)

Anything to do with Tubs – horrible and pointless
old skool post mount cantilever brakes

as a bike shop mech, not a lot phases me. Avid can FRO though

very good, feels like a normal bike until you mess up a tight corner and remember you’re on massive wheels. Not bad weight-wise either

A bush reamer for a brompton is about £600 last time I checked. Bushes are better on paper, but need care fitting. Fine for smaller production runs (brompton, turner) but if you are making proper quantities (trek, Spesh) Its a helluva lot easier to push a bearing in.

It’ll be fine. Generally speaking, mineral oil is mineral oil is mineral oil. Magura, tektro, shimano – all the same stuff pretty much. What changes is what they charge you to dye it a special colour.

Lots of overthinking this. It’s there because nobody has brought out a shadow road mech yet, and barrel adjusters are handy.

can’t see why Spesh wouldn’t sort that out, check with the shop after Chrimbo

@Scardeypants Standard warranty is 2 years on suspension bits (stays, rockers etc) lifetime on mainframe. The 2 years bit is fairly fluid, too…

swingarm may not be covered under frame warranty, some manufacturers class them as a component; giving you a 1 or 2 year warranty at most

wasn’t after prosecution etc, just me bike back really. Reason I mentioned logging the crime was I’m struggling for receipts and paperwork but if there is a police record of a kona with XYZ spec they can’t dispute it’s not mine. Scarily the bike is exactly as it was last time I saw it, apart from one of the tyres has been swapped – fork, wheels, cranks, pedals, brakes, even the seat are all the same.

I’m writing a list of the spec (down to shimano M7XX part numbers) and am going to phone the manager on monday and can hopefully convince him I’m not a chancer

had a 105 GS mech working with 10speed SLX cassette and Ultegra STIs working sweet as today. 50/34 with 12/34 cassette. The mechs are a different swing but the cassette spacing is the same.

you need an old kona style crown mounted brake stop for the judder issue. New tricross has new frame and fork, little bit slimmer and no zertz.
