worth a try given that pretty much any new bike purchase these days will involve a new fork and wheels to boot.

Exactly Shackleton! If we didn’t have 27.5″ then i’d just buy a 5010 frame and be done with it. I think it’s a very sneaky way to stop people doing exactly that, those wheels are hand built by Stif with a 36 hole rear, was hoping to use them for years to come but now i’m going to have to spend an extra grand and a half for a new frame with lesser components!!…….anyway rant aside, this is exactly why i’m thinking of getting a new rear shock, just to tide me over until i’m ready to splurge on a 5010.

There is still the question of whether the 5010 can take as much abuse on the fun bits as the Heckler though.

Thanks Mike but we are all different and i work away from home a lot so weekends driving around to demo bikes is not on the cards as i’d prefer to spend it with the loved ones but thanks for the info re. VPP.

Then the KS eTEN is your friend :D

EDIT: sorry, just seen you need 125mm rise. Are you sure though? 100mm is more than enough to get the saddle out of the way for me. Could be worth checking minimum insertion level and all that crap though.

Another one for KS here. I use an eTEN which has 100mm rise, which is fine for me. The main reason i got it was because it has as much layback as my Thomson so it gives me more room in the cockpit. It’s stealth black, only cost me £125 and works brilliantly.

My last move was based on how bike friendly the place was, this move was based on how cheap the place is, I guess this is the compromise.

F*** it, bike will have to live in the lounge.

Anyone recommend a portable jet wash?

    Nice idea but $400!??

    Doesn’t look very strong.

Yeah I don’t think keeping it outside is an option at all, besides the fact that it’d block the pathway I’m away for several days at a time during the week so chances are someone would have it away while I’m gone!

That’s quite an interesting one, there’s a garage on the road from me so could be an option. Can’t keep anything in my car though as it gets filled with works kit. Does anyone here use a portable jet wash? Anyone just use two buckets and clean it on the street?

    I’m almost certain it would

Me too. I think there are some messed up people on this thread lol

I’d agree with the original statement. You won’t be hopping round the world on a private jet or supping champagne on your own island . With good investment you should be able to bring in 50-60k, and possibly a lot more, for doing nothing for the rest of your life, which would be very nice.

So what was originally meant was that a million won’t let you lead a billionaire’s lifestyle for long?

I’d start a bike company knowing that essentially I just had to break even.

I think you may need more than money to start a successful bike company. Like knowledge and experience for example ;-)

Sadly, Nowadays, a Million does not give you a millionaires lifestyle for long…

How many times have you won a million quid!??

Honestly the interweb really brings out the PO in people’s faces sometimes.

I was reading the Dirt Top 100 and saw they rated the Kona Process 153 DL very highly indeed. It’s too much travel for my sort of riding but might be more your cup of tea.

Do you really need 34+mm stanchions? Seems overkill for 140mm travel forks. Only reason i ask is that Revs are plenty stiff and there are loads of them on the market with 1 1/8 steerers.

Mine are 150mm, 20mm maxle and PLUSH. And pretty stiff.

Tenner in Asda. Although only ever bought George underpants in an emergency.

I had a couple fail on me in a row, realised it was because water was getting into the frame through the seat tube and rusting the bearings. I now have a lump of wax in my seat post and i always turn the bike upside down after washing it to drain any water out. Seems to be helping so far.

It’s environmental consultancy, a lot of acronyms in some of the job descriptions. I’m wondering if there are agencies that deal with specific fields like environmental consultancy…

I think you have to accept you pay a premium for buying in an LBS

I do accept it, it’s just the price of MTB components makes it a bit hard to swallow sometimes. For example the knee pads in this week’s fresh goods Friday….£60!

My LBS are alright though, they have helped me out a couple of times and didn’t charge me for fitting a new valve on the air side of my forks, i was expecting to pay at least a tenner for that. They also gave me a front mech for free from their parts bin. So when the time comes around when i need a bike shop i’ll choose them again and not somebody else.

The problem i think is that MTB is just so expensive in the first place and the RRP of some things is off-the-scale ridiculous.

When i used to skate i would try and visualise what i was about to do and break it down into chunks, eg – pop, flip, catch, land. I found that helped a lot. The closer you’ve been to doing something the easier it is to visualise which is why it’s best to start small and work your way up.

Unfortunately it’s not just inner tubes where bike shops take the proverbial. Just before Christmas i was offered a pair of 150mm Rockshox Sektor coil forks by my LBS for £360, only to find they were going for £250 new online (a 44% increase).

Fortunately some bloke on here sold me some Reveleation RLTs for £200 :)

    Takes the p1ss doesn’t it?

I understand they have overheads but that kind of mark up is out of order.

I went through Gumtree and never had to pay a tenancy fee or suspect “renewal fees”. Unless you really like where you’re living enough to stay and pay i would go elsewhere. The state of the rental market at the moment is so badly regulated these t*ss pieces seem to think they can charge whatever they want for thin air. Tell them to shove it up their a*ses, face to face… so they know exactly who they’re dealing with ;)

Good luck with nikon point and shoots, they are notoriously flimsy and this is coming from someone who worked in a camera shop and had to send them off for repair on a regular basis. The bit you have to watch out for is the zoom ring in front of the shutter button, it feels flimsy and it is.

I would have gone for a Fuji XP series, shockproof, waterproof and pretty much childproof. You can pick up an old model for £50

    FujiXP50

Sorry to cast doubt but those cheap Nikon P&S’s are just about the flimsiest cameras i’ve had my hands on.

sometimes miracles do seem to happen

It’s true, the body is an amazing thing and someone as fit and mentally sharp as Schumacher is well placed to make as full a recovery as possible given his situation. It’s said that you can beat Alzheimer’s by keeping your brain active as it keeps the neurons firing. Nerve cells regenerate and can grow between 2 & 5mm per DAY. It will be a slow process but i think it’s too early to write him off just yet. His family will be dealing with an immediate change/loss and the last thing they want is the media saying he’s on his way to recovery when nobody really knows what the outcome will be. It’s the kind of thing you take one day at a time.

Our HR Manager is the MD’s wife. She works 3 days a week at her leisure except when it’s a bank holiday and then she works two. And we all get an email each week telling us which days she is having off working from home.

Hi sodadr you’ll be fine i did it for three years and had a few crashes including falling on my belly but it was always my body and face that took the impact! Just as TedC says, if you’ve had a laparotomy then don’t push it at first and recover well between rides of you’ll end up with a hernia.

Even water has bacteria in it, not harmful ones but still ones that can multiply if they have moisture and warmth which is why you should sterilize it with a tablet dissolved in water, leave to soak and then stored in the freezer as others have said.

Sometimes i even splash a bit of bleach in bathroom sink full of water and soak it in that for half an hour – as long as you wash all the bleach out again afterwards it won’t harm you. I do this if i’ve been lazy and not washed it for a week and need to use it quickly.

There is a video of a guy on Youtube explaining how to modify a gopro 3 prong to make this adaptor but i’ve lost it and can’t find it again. Dying to try mine out as it’s been sat in the box unused for months now which is annoying!

Im not really sure what you mean by “getting it to tighten in an uoright or horizontal position”

I use the notch to get it tight and then flip it closed in the position i want it. You can use the rebound adjuster hex key to set the tension (ie how much it clamps shut when you close the lever down).

*Edit i have revs not pikes so sorry if thats completely useless

Thanks I’ve just checked the website, parking is £2 and up the road from the forestry commission car park as mentioned.

I saw a guy on the Earthed videos with a bicycle frame and he was using it as a giant triangle and whacking it with a metal bar, I thought that was a good way of.making noise!

I’d forgotten about this! Is parking a problem? The car park isn’t very big and I can imagine it fills up early.

I used strava for the first time the other week and was pretty surprised to see I was hitting 37.6mph on the roads between trails! Had no idea I was going that fast. So I would probably miss the 11t/36t combo if I went 1×10. With this thread in mind though I made a point of not using the 34t or the one down from it and still made the road climb from stagnage edge up towards burbage so I should probably try and man up a bit more often and get the legs working.

I’m running a gore ride-on cable on the front which has lasted 7 years and a Shimano for the rear. It was a Gore on the rear too until I changed frames and needed a longer cable. They’re quite expensive though and hard to find but they’re awesome cables.

I agree that probably most hydraulics work well but they have the odd quirk like a mate of mine had the XTs and loved them but we went to.Wales one time and it was -5°C and his brakes just stopped working. They are more complicated by design what with the fluid but cars have been like that for years I suppose. Its just my BB7S are so reliable I can’t help thinking that no brake is as hassle free. Deores do get very good word of mouth though. Maybe the only reason people seem to complain about XT more is that they paid more for them in the first place? Either way I’m not made of money so I think I’ll use what little spare cash I have to upgrade my drive train instead.
