yeah the avid pads aren’t as cheap as the shimano’s. i’m canny and try to stockpile whenever they come up cheap ;)

dosen’t the road BB7 have a different lever-pull to pad movement ratio? at least i think that’s the difference. made for different levers/amount of pull. could be wrong.

who was that with owen? was it a set weight allowance or will it be cheaper than that for a single wheel?

    no feel or modulation.

absolute rubbish. get some speed dial levers and nice cables and learn to use your fingers properly!

Have to adjust them more often, for obvious reasons, so they need tweaking at the end of every ride (or half way round, if the weather’s bad)

what obvious reasons are they then? they never trouble me. only time i had to mess with them mid-ride was when it was -3C at coed y brenin and the Gore Ride-On cable liner froze to the inner and pulled itself through the outer cable. Just popped it back in and it was fine. My friend’s new XT brakes just didn’t even work at that temperature until he eventually got some heat back into them.

One very important advantage is if you are doing a lot of mud riding. You can wind the pads back a wee bit and there is less scraping when the brake is off, so your pads will last longer.

    never thought of that!

I’ll tell you another advantage – trees. i hit a tree once and bent the caliper. all i had to do was take it off and put it in my pocket. how would you do that with hydraulics? there’d be oil everywhere!

    in a nutshell:

simple, fuss-free no bleeding, easy to set up, powerful, good modulation, light, cheap.

scared to go to hydraulics incase they’re not as good!

DO NOT REMOVE IT! it’s factory perfect. leave it be.

Why not just learn to remove tyres without them…

visions of broken fingers and fingernails torn away from the skin spring to mind, that’s why! may be possible on some tyre/rim combinations but if you’re man enough to come and try to get this tyre off this rim with your bare hands feel free (i bet you can’t ;) )

i didnt mean the owner could just give them to charity, but it would be feasible for a charity to buy that lot up and take it to rwanda/ africa to make some little 13yr old’s daily 6 mile journey for water a bit easier. thats why we give money to these charities.

i don’t think either copper grease or threadlock would hurt on rotor bolts. however they do come with blue threadlock as standard.

    bomberman

i don’t think so. every bolt on your bike has a reccomended torque setting but i’ve never used a torque wrench. just gotta make sure you don’t nip things up so tight that you damage the threads. But if you can afford it and think you’ll use it often enough then go for it

where exactly is mmmbop? i saw it in the singletrack calendar but can’t figure out where it is. can’t be far from me…

what i find is, on regularly spaced steps it all seems a bit too easy until you start going too fast and thats when you lose control- it all gets a bit too bouncy! so you need to keep it smooth and controlled so as not to HAVE to use your brakes too much.

If youre going too fast and need to slow it down remember that too much of either brake will cause you to A) go into a back wheel skid or B) go over the bars. I’d rather over-brake using the rear than go over the bars any day but a bit of front brake applied at the right time is often a lot more effective in slowing you down. The more you get a feel for these things the more you learn how much of each brake you can get away with.

i’m a bit of a wuss on irregular steps. especially if they’re wet/muddy. If i can see a good place to bail (like on devs pic there’s a grass banking on the right. still look bloody steep though!) but if they’re steep and trecherous i tend to walk and be really pi**ed off with myself afterwards for not giving them a try.

How does the country in which they’re made affect whether they’re organic?

I NEVER said it did. but if you use your imagination you might ask how they get the clothes from china to here? on a plane perhaps? carbon footprint? damage to environment? organic being an environmental issue after all.

Please don’t type another word bomberman. Or at least go and have a think before typing

I’m entitled to post whatever i like to stimulate debate/discussion, and you can’t tell me otherwise, nor can you stop me. and maybe i think too much kelvin

being strange I do prefer the old stiff ones

    dosen’t surprise me

I still don’t know what catching you own food has to do with Howies clothing. All this organic crap smacks of Jamie Oliver the fat-tongued w*nker that he is…

ive got a high roller 62a kevlar folding on the front in a 2.35. i found the super tacky high roller too slow rolling. it chews up the ground and spits it in your face. The kevlar folding 62a is much lighter and still grippy – i’m happy with it.

you’ll need a wrench with the appropriate cassette lockring remover attachment and a chainwhip to stop it rotating as you turn it anticlockwise.

Plus to change the chainrings you might need a chainring bolt tightening tool – if you look on the back of the chainring there’s a slot. othewise you probably won’t be able to nip the chainring up tight.
