Just under 30lb is great for a full sus if you want it to last a while, besides if you’ve got a silly light wheelset/forks/tyres you only get flat spotted wheels/flex/flat tyres and you just have to pay out more to get it all fixed! At around 30lb youre getting the best of both worlds.

would you mind telling me where the steps in the vid are? i’ve been exploring round there in the last few days as it’s just down the road from me and i was really excited when i found the man made jump at the end of the vid. Theres loads more stuff round there too but i don’t recognise the steps at all. also when did you film it?

this is a great idea!!! There are a lot of different ideas going on on this thread though. if i may I propose that we make a list in takas thread of who can donate what in which areas, as i’m sure we can squeeze more than one bike out of this and maybe spread them out over the UK? for example i’m in the North West and i can donate so-and-so, and we could have someone building a bike in each area?

i do feel bad for you though i’ve had a few bikes nicked from leeds. I also had one returned by the police so don’t give up hope. could be a good excuse to build a rat bike for town and shops duties

borrowed both my old Merlin Malt and my wife’s Giant XTC to do some sightseeing around town

you shouldn’t really have let them go for a pootle round town on your fancy mountain bikes. That’s quite a naive thing to do. i wouldn’t even take my bike into town. it stays in the house unless i’m taking it mountain biking

as far as i know most santa cruzes come up short on the TT side of things. I’m 5″8 and my medium heckler is “chuckable” to say the least so i run it with a layback seatpost. i’m more of a 30″ inside leg. i would say go for the large unless you like your bikes to come up small but to be honest i think you’d be cramped on a medium

does anyone actually use the propedal?

sorry for the slight hijack, but how do the maxxis crossmark and the larsen TT compare? they look quite similar but these things are never simple

the st4 isn’t really in the same league as the 5 – it’s not as burly and has 4 inches of travel. it’s the kind of bike you’d want if you were missing being involved in the trails a bit more as i think bobster pointed out. The Dirt review said it was a very fast bike but none of the builds offered on the orange website are particularly lightweight (although the dirt testbike had an xtr crankset fitted). You’d notice the difference coming from a reign to an ST4 whereas i think you could get away with a lot more on the five.

    the st4 would be a great race-bike with a nice lightweight build…

went out in leeds lastnight, started in North bar with a pint of Erdinger brown (they do literally hundreds of beers from all over the world) i can usually get very drunk in there just off two or 3. next door to that you’ve got Cellar Bar. then down the road to the corn exchange and call lane – revoluton, jake’s bar, BRB, then up to Mylo.

they’re not for fashion, i’ve got one on my heckler along with a 36t and short cage rear mech which means everything is tucked up out of the way. i really love the 36 up front as it means i have a wide range of gears without having to keep shifting at the front. you can’t use the 44/34 on a triple anyway. i vote double and bash – seen how expensive chainrings are at the moment? i’ve seen far too many people with buggered outer rings and i DONT miss the big ring at all, not even riding down steep roads.

    so let’s summarise:

    pros:
    no more broken outer chainrings
    more clearance
better ratio/can use all possible combinations/less changing gear at front
can’t cut your leg on outer ring
one less ring to replace when they wear out

    cons:
you might miss the extra speed you can get out of a 44

    The choice is yours!

i find most gloves last around the same length of time, just pick a pair with a decent rep that you like the look of. i’ve got a bit of a thing about gloves at the moment and currently have 4 pairs: sombrio forensic in shadow, 661 comp in black, 661 comp in green and white and some gore wind stopper for when it gets chilly. i like the look of the adidas race gloves in white mmmm!

my advice: start putting a tenner away each week in a little box labelled “bike fund”. you never know when a bargain turns up on the classifieds…
