I am still quite young (27) and almost died recently of ulcerative colitis. Having had my life saved with a 5 hour operation to remove my large intestine i left hospital feeling quite humbled and am currently living it up with as much alcohol/riding/travelling as possible, and the occasional class A drugs ;)

and by the way i DID get drunk the other night. WAAAAY too drunk! woke up at my friends house in the dog’s bed with a broken nose. Apparently slipped on some sprite and hit the wooden floor face first

i wouldn’t lift the seals too often if i were you as you’ll just nacker them. My talas are from way back in 2004 and when i took them apart a few months ago i was petty surprised to find them absolutely spotless inside. foam rings clean as a whistle, no dirt in the lowers, no wear on the stanchions at all. To be fair i clean them thoroughly after every ride and use a bit of teflon dry lube to keep the seals lubricated but all this talk of lifting the seals every 15 hours seems a bit extreme to me.

they tell you to squirt a few mls of fluid in the lowers

10ml goes in at the bottom on the talas side

160ml goes in at the bottom on the damper side. this damper oil is free to wander the right leg of the fork but as the fork is upright most of the time it collects at the bottom and gets sucked up by the damper cartridge on the rebound stroke. When you dismantle the fork half of this oil just falls out of the right leg and you have to pump the rebound cartridge to get the rest out.

i’ve serviced my fox’s and i did a bit of research into this subject. i spoke to TF tuned and Mojo and also found a load of stuff on the interweb:

    Fox talas service MTBR thread

peter verdone’s webpage on fork suspension fluid alternatives

Aparently fox float fluid AND fox suspension fluid are just re-branded with the fox name. Fox float fluid is 85w gear oil (used in engine gearboxes) which is a lot thicker than the suspension fluid which is 7.5w as standard.

i was expecting the fox video to tell me to put float fluid on the seals, as this is what they bundle in with the seal kit but it actually told me to soak them in suspension fluid. So i dont really think it matters too much.

and by the way i got a syringe full of gear oil free from my local motorbike shop in exchange for a few syringes, and TF tuned recommended 5w synthetic motorbike oil (i’m under 10 stone) to reduce spiking and they feel really smooth :)

Are v2 rotors thicker than normal rotors? they do a 185mm rotor but the 183mm v2 is what i’m after. thinking i can mess with the mount washers to get 3mm off.

    bending the rotor violently

Violence? I spent literally HOURS taking the disc off, putting it in the vice, bending it this way and that, marking the rub-points with black marker, re-fitting the disc, etc etc etc. Figured out that i was just over-bending it one way then the other. In the end i ditched the vice and spanner and just left the disc on the wheel and coaxed it into line with my FINGERS. worked a treat!

Mind you about 1/3 of the disc was rubbing the pad, i can imagine if its more of a short sharp kink you might need a spanner to get it straight but if its just a gentle warp then try with ur hands first otherwise you risk making mincemeat out of it!

and also will a hope rotor give me as much grab as a G2 clean sweep? using BB7s?

all good advice, sounds like a bit of tweaking is all thats needed. Owen how did you get a 180mm adaptor for your avids? or will any adaptor fit? I was thinking about swapping the conical washers round on the caliper to bring it down from 185 to 183mm to get around the groove problem…

Mark – read the rules, still don’t get it. would email you direct but your emails not in your profile. Since your a Mod i guess you can do whatever you want but in MY eyes, what you did just serves to put women off using the forum. which is a bad thing.

and by the way Mark, i think you’re a noob for closing down aleigh’s women’s version of this thread – especially since the reason for it was that it was brought to your attention. you’ve posted on here yourself and not shut this one down…. whats the matter – no balls? ;)

pump the fork a bit to release the oil from the damper? it won’t all run out under gravity. ignore the warranty comment, it’s a load of rubbish

Took apart my 2004 TALAS last month. stanchions were perfect, i repeat: PERFECT. they had never been serviced, i was their second owner. I took pics to prove it, any haters may email me for a pic (tim_lovelady@hotmail.com)

Everybody knows Fox make the the plushest forks – Any fork will go to sh*t if you don’t look after it. i just clean mine after muddy rides using soapy water then drop a bit of teflon dry lube on the seals, pump the fork and wipe away the excess.

i was actually thinking about taking a brush to some of them but a rake is an even better idea… Does anyone have any tips on making cheeky trail features in local woods such as berms and small ladder drops without them being demolished by nosey walkers? How do people do this sort of thing on the sly?

you enter all 3 – xc, downhill and “classic trials”, and have to use one bike on all sections. You can apply to opt out of a section i believe. 3 skills on one bike sounds like a lot of fun!
