Calories in calories out is a pretty good place to start. Yes biochemistry (glycolysis, gluconeogenesis) plays a part but if you force your body into deficit it has to trigger the biochemical processes needed to convert fat reserves into energy to fuel the body which includes transcription on demand of the genes needed to produce the proteins needed to do this. The more your body is used to doing this the more quickly it can do it on demand, so those that chug the ale after a ride will find it harder to burn fat when they do d code to abstain. But then I’m just a biochemist so what do I know!?

Ride more, eat less, get used to being in deficit (hunger) and you’ll lose weight. It’s that simple.

It depends how fast your metabolism runs. If you’ve got a fast metabolism and you’re naturally slim you can eat more and ride less than someone who has a slow metabolism and you’ll still be thinner than them. Also I think if you eat lots of the right things fruits vegetables etc after a ride instead of high fat and sugar foods you’ll see more advantages (this is the calories in calories out part). It wasn’t until I started monitoring my calories burned on rides and looking at food labels that I realised how difficult it is to burn more than you eat. A chocolate hobnob is 94 calories, I burn 500 on a 20km ride. So all I need do to tip the balance is eat 6 chocolate hobnobs and I’ve already negated a 20k ride. Obviously a heavier rider burns more calories in that distance but can probably put away more biscuits

I’ve been at the end of a 20+ mile ride at jizzburn and getting asked to move over by 3 ebikers, who i’d already let past 15 minutes earlier. They’d stopped for a rest and wanted past again. Just fricking annoying if you ask me.

That’s great thanks for the responses gives me a bit more confidence.

Chakaping and neilsonwheels – Is the FSA converter easy to install or is it a bike shop job? Is it an absolute permanent solution or can it be knocked out again further down the line without damaging the frame?  And if it’s a bike shop job will they need specific tools? I want it to be a clean and perfect installation and i’m not sure I have confidence in my LBS to deal with a very niche bottom bracket installation that could potentially damage the frame after seeing them fail to remove my stuck dropper post in quite a heavy handed way.

Jonnyboi i’m not really sure about that link you posted it says it’s for Mega Exo which i’m not sure shimano is.

    Also interested in this.

I used the opportunity to go back to a Shimano (24mm axle) crank so I could have bigger bearings than what fits inside the BB shell. It helped that I had one kicking around which cut the cost of doing so.

So does the Hope PF30 BB allow you to run a shimano 24mm axle?

The default search for the forum is not fit for purpose so we have turned it off. It principally fails because it searches the entire database of 9 million posts on every use. That is pretty inefficient and usually grinds the forum to a halt for everyone.

So we are developing our own custom search function based on something called Elastic Stack. That works by separating the search from the general forum functions so they can both operate without affecting each other. Hope to be rolling that out soon.

Thank you Mark, good to know it’s coming back.

Forums, which used to be Forum activity, almost ok I can see the idea, it’s good. but the only problem is when you click on the replies created, it’s shows up all the posts, but there is no way to actually click back into a thread from the replies list.

As i also found out when trying to find my way back to this thread!

Again it’s good to know that it’ll be sorted 👍🏻

    Oh No!

I came to see if anyone has a Saris Bones bike rack for sale but alas, the search bar now only searches the articles and the advanced search function is GONE! 🙁😢

I have tried using google and “site:singletrackworld.com(search term)” which only brings up a load of discussion posts about the saris bones.

Is there a way to use google to search the For Sale forum specifically and have it display the results in chronological order?

Hoping there are some tech people who can help….

Has the tight Lycra made them mute or is it something else ?

Believe it or not the roads are quite dangerous for road bikers and when doing 40 mph they’re often busy avoiding pot holes or looking ahead to make sure nobody pulls out of a side road on them. Or climbing a hill pushing 400 watts/200 bpm out of breath and trying to concentrate.

Or maybe you just look like a ****?

Yes normal chainsets are 24mm axle diameter, BB/PF30 is 30mm (unsurprisingly).

Chapking thanks for that, makes a bit more sense now.

So I need a 30mm axle chainset for a 73mm BB shell. Or an adaptor. Cheers!

    bomberman

Sorry I thought you were asking because you already had a standard 24mm chainset.

You can use a different BB30/PF30 chainset, or just get a narrow-wide ring on your existing chainset.

No problem, the one that’s in there came on the bike so it’s looking a little bit tatty. There just doesn’t seem to be many options out there for replacement PF30 chainsets. What i can’t understand is that surely it’s just the BB that has to be PF30 specific? Not the chainset. I would have thought that once the BB is in place then it would allow any chainset to be installed, is that not the case?

what is the 24mm you refer to? is it the axle diameter of the chainset?

sorry am totally behind on BB standards…

So i will need to buy an adaptor and a bottom bracket? Is there not just a replacement crank that will fit?

I was diagnosed with UC in 2008, 2 months later i was having an emergency colectomy. Had a bag for 3 years and then a bowel resection with internal pouch anastomosis. Now i take 8 loperamide a day and need to empty my pouch about the same number of times. Drinking red wine now which is pretty much the only thing that really messes me up (lol). Obviously i’d rather be pooping twice a day but i’m pain free and i just deal with the inconvenience. One thing i do remember is that i started with hives when I exercised, broke out in a blotchy itchy rash on my chest. And then followed consistently bad mouth ulcers for a period of a few months. So if you have any of these symptoms it could be Crohn’s or UC. It’s not a glamorous subject and for that reason I think you’ll find there are a lot more people affected than we realise so props for bringing this up and please keep us updated!

For me it went like this:

    1. Quit my job and gave up company car.
    2. Got given a commuter with 26″ wheels, for the shop run.
    3. Wanted something faster so sold the (free) commuter and bought a cheap road bike
    4. Wanted something faster so upgraded the tyres & wheels on said road bike.
    5. Wanted something faster so upgraded to a carbon road bike with new shiny bits on.
    6. Wanted something faster so…… you get the idea.

I still ride MTB but the feeling of being able to hit 50mph with the wind slapping me in the face is just awesome, and i found out that i’m actually pretty good at it in the grand scheme of strava times. Now i’m into minor gains and aerodynamics and all that stuff, it’s addictive. It’s also about the convenience and simplicity of it compared to mountain biking – I can just throw on my bib shorts, pump up my tyres, fill my bottles, grab some gels and head into the hills for a few hours and when I get back there isn’t half of Calderdale that needs cleaning off my bike.

And i think being a MTB’er makes me a better roadie, and vice-versa.

I was hoping to keep this til it died.

Well, it has died hasn’t it. If i were you i’d get something more bike friendly than a fiesta ST, something like an Octavia estate. The only Ford ST drivers I know/ have seen are either a bit of a d*ck in person or drive like bell ends, usually. Not that i’m saying you aspire to be one of them…

I just ride whatever roads i need to to get my favourite trails, I don’t add in “extra” roads to “make it look like” i’ve done a bigger ride, as you put it. I’ve got a road bike for that.

It’s as easy as riding a bike, no need to over-think it.

Why did you take it up with the eBay seller before meeting him face to face? I would have just gone and got it and let him sort it out with whoever sold it him, especially if you’ve got proof of serial. He is obviously a bit dense as he can’t even string a proper sentence together.

Which ring wont it shift into? The big one, little one or both? It sounds like it just needs a good clean and degrease to me to get it moving again has it not been used for a whike/ridden through winter and left to seize? Maybe a bit of wd40 and an old toothbrush to work it in and get it moving with your fingers. Other than that it could be the return spring has gone or the cables arent allowing it enough slack to move to the small ring but without knowing a bit more and seeing a pic its difficult to know what to suggest

They always pick the most vulnerable people in society to try and turn don’t they? The “no-hopers”. I almost imagine i’ll fall off my bike one day and be lying on the ground and someone’ll come up and say “Have you thought about believing in God?”…

I’m no climbing expert but i’m 5″8 and weigh just over 10 stone after a year of road riding so i’d say you’re at least a couple of stone off being “race” weight.

If climbing is all about power to weight, is it worth joining a gym and doing weights/squats etc?

    yep, and this.

And apparently all the fast boys around Calderdale are riding carbon hardtail 29ers.

So you need to do 3 things:

    1 – More hills
2 – lose weight (which will come with riding up more hills)
    3 – buy a new bike.

Or you could just ride because you enjoy it and not because you want to be better than the rest ;-)

It’s a cheap hub and I’ve been hammering it for two winters so it’s probably on its way out. I noticed everything was loose – cassette, end cap and this fella so I took it apart and had a look inside and the pawl design is rubbish just 3 pawls with a flimsy retaining spring to make them move! The spring had actually come unseated and only one pawl was working so I probably got to it just in time. Rubbishy Specialized wheel set with zero online maintenance!

I just got my OH a Madison Leia jacket, £80 RRP but they can be had in various colours and sizes from eBay for half that price. 100% waterproof and very breathable and lifetime guarantee. They’re the female equivalent of the Madison Roam jacket which I’ve had for a year and a half now and I’ve worn almost two winters and for me it’s almost unbeatable. When it was new I used to wear it mountain biking and then just wipe it clean with a damp sponge and wear it to the pub!

The women’s sizes come up small though so check the size charts carefully and consider going up a size – my OH is an 8 but the arms were 5cm too short when outstretched so I got her a 12.

I started road biking in February after 10 years of mountain biking – I was scared at first and had a massive chip on my shoulder/ sh*t bricks at the sound of cars coming up behind me but i think (hopefully) now i’ve mellowed out a bit. Maybe If you’ve had 10 years off it might take you a few months to mellow out again? I assume everyone is a bad driver and i’ve learned not to hug the kerb, that way drivers have to take more notice and overtake properly instead of trying to squeeze past.

At this time of year especially It’s really important to be visible so use front and rear lights and reflectives for when it’s dark or overcast, high viz does absolutely jack sh*t in the dark.

As most people have already said just plan routes that avoid main roads, that way you’re not battling rush hour desperadoes and football mums in 4 x 4’s.

And yeah low sun is a killer :-( Stay visible, stay safe!

What rivi said. Love my briskers but they arent warm in proper frigid cold weather. I got some altura night vision high viz for the road bike and wore them on the tops mountain biking today and they were warm enough. Theyre on sale in black from wiggle at the moment.

I got bored after two runs, mainly because it’s all crammed into a small space and so you need to be really skilled to be able to ride it – it’s very tight and twisty and slippery. You’d be disappointed if you’d driven from manchester to ride it but you have the whole peak district at your disposal from there.

You can park at the Norfolk arms and either follow Fulwood Ln to Redmires reservoir and out to stanage edge via stanage pole, down the pack horse trail (the edge) and do a cheeky back along Ringinglow road to Burbage Bridge and get on the trail which runs parallel to the footpath along Burbage Edge to the Fox House pub. Then back along Houndkirk Road (a great route in itself) and THEN finish off with a play in Lady Cannings plantation.

    OR

You could start with a play in Cannings and then head down Houndkirk road and turn LEFT at the Fox House pub, down Owler Bar Rd and left through the gate onto Moss Rd down towards Blacka Dyke (there is a left turn through another gate that leads to some quality singletrack that leads to the Dyke). That will bring you back out onto the A626 and you can cut up and get back onto Houndkirk Rd and back to the car park.

Either route is challenging and fun for all but will have some get off and walk sections for complete newbies. Cannings is more like a pump track.

Yes! Ive got the roam jacket and i LOVE it, its the best jecket ive ever had. Wore it all last winter it was perfect.

Its so waterproof you could throw a pint down it and it’d just bounce off. It wipes clean and dries quick. It has vents in the back so not too warm (I was out riding in snow and just wore one base layer underneath). And its trendy enough to wear down the pub.

    Get one.

Did you onow that 90% of drag comes from your body and only 10% from the bike? So your body position could make a huge difference compared to the 500g difference between 105 and dura ace. Having a lighter bike will only help you on hills and sprints – places where you accelerate. I have an old road bike with some sensible upgrades (wheels, tyres, brakes, chainset) and i’m within a couple of seconds off the fastest guy i ride with and he has all the carbon bling but hes been road riding for 3 years to my 7 months so hes just generally fitter.

You could train on heavier wheels or with a chainlock or a couple of bricks wrapped in a towel in your backpack if you’re serious about it and then on race day you can instantly shed 2 kilos without spending anything!

I’m based in West London (Ealing), but spend a lot of time also in Regents Park as I work in Chelesea, Richmond Park for quick spins and out to Windsor etc on the weekends

Even if it doesn’t ever see a race track – it’s a new bike.

Admit it, you’re not really serious about racing – you just want an excuse to splash the cash on “race level bling”

Move to Yorkshire lad and get up some hills, no point training on the flat.
