this was not driven by act or cytech and for some the technical certificate can be an 18 month study not a week.
the retailers that i have spoken with seem happy about the best 50 challenge and who knows, it might introduce some healthy bonding/competition between shops or lead onto encourage tigh fisted shop owners to train their staff to newer levels of competence-we will see.

as for Scotland and Wales-the governing bodies do not yet want to release funding for training so it is a little prohibative for retailers to train their staff. i wish this wasnt true because this is where the riding is. if you want to see more Scots/Welsh on the list next year-i know i do- then lobby your councillors or m.ps to allow young people to be trained to gain a valuable qualification in the cycle trade..please.

can vary if the steerer is steel or alloy, old bean

the tolerances should be quite tight between steerers. if you are worried, have the crown faced then fit the headset and check for play.

if it is able to spin freely then discard and source another race, bit if it fits all snuggerly then run it as is.

yup. v-10 would be overbiked but fun, especially on the qualifier as it is more dh than the actual mega track.
if it is your first time, and you dont care about results just having fun, then i wouldnt sweat it too much the mega can be ridden on anything!

good luck and see you there

if the bushing is worn down, buy a new one from ebay! freehub is simple to remove.
-pull of non-drive side axle cap with pliers
8mm hex wrench in non-drive side, 5mm in drive side the undo
carefully!! remove freehub paying attention to the pawl springs that might spring out.
-also do not lose the washer which is inside the freehub, this rests inside and between the freehub and axle.
-clean freehub and pawls with rubbing alchohol the apply light oil to ratchets and pawls-dont go mad!
if your cassette is wobbling on the freehub then the bushing will need to be replaced-look on ebay.
-when ready to replace:place washer ontop of axle with a little grease, push pawls in and gently slide the freehub down and fit into place.
-8mm,5mm hex wrenches again to tighten up. about 70nm, quite tight!

    good luck

i visit alot of halfords stores as part of my job-i am a cytech/nvq assessor-and i meet lots of enthusiastic riders who are keen to be trained and learn about new techniques. In my opinion the stores key customers are usually families/first time buyers etc who then might progress onto a local store because as one gets more into riding it becomes un-hip to shop at halfords.
From what i have seen they do the best they can with what they've got!

if you dont want to pay to play at trail centres there are plenty of trails elsewhere you still have a choice.
if i had some woodland and was building trails then i would charge riders as most people are happy for someone else to do the building and pay a little for ease of use-others will be able to take up a map and explore.
we do have a way in the u.k of rolling over and playing dead when it comes to being charged though and comments about car park charges in France are, in my experience correct, i rode grizedale last weekend and was charged parking and £4.50 for an egg roll!
it seems that we are always being encouraged to be consumers wether it is on the high st or in the woods so of you want to ride free get a map.
The comments about more transparency with funds generated from income is interesting and i wonder how it would be beneficial to locals, who have possibly have direct input, compared to riders travelling from further afield for one/two days riding.
how would the sport benefit in the long term with the potential increase of revenue?
would we receive more recognition if we are generating more cash?
would funding for development go down?
how has it been funded thus far?
and is it fair to begin charging now, after dangling the carrot and getting some of us addicted to easy to follow, flowing trails with a good cup of coffee and a slice of cake at the end of it?

    stay happy!

i always wear a helmet when riding off road as i feel my risks are increased because i have chosen to do this. when riding on road i tend not to wear one as each time i have crashed it has been my hips/shoulder or wrists that take the impact.
i am always amused by some of my clients who hail from new zealand or australia because when i am guiding them they almost always choose to not wear a helmet-rebelling against the helmet laws in their own countries.

it is not about how tight the straps are, it is more about wether the shoe fits :-) across the width of your forefoot and isnt compressing your toes.
unfortunately cycling shoes are not usually fitted correctly in the first place! i might suggest superfeets orthotics as they do a cycle specific footbed.
    hope it gets better

i found that i was riding with my sidis done up too tight. when loosened it alleviated the tingling.
it can easily be caused by a compression on the navicular bone in the foot-i fitted ski boots and learnt alot about foot issues but i'm no exert just trying to help!

try loosening you shoes, if the nerves get trapped or blood flow is reduced across the meta tarsals then it will induce a numb feeling.

    wearing bibs-check.

those arriva headphones look good but 2 things-i quite like a good sound and wind noise is always an issue when riding. i tried bigger cans but they just get hot.

the quality looks good from the stats, but do they not keep falling out over long rides? maybe i should try anti perspirant in my lugholes? :-)

    '55mph' hahaha, whateva treva!
i find the bike handling skills i practice off road are useful on a road ride-pushing the bike through the corners and head up observations are all useful tools.
but watching the riders descend yesterday, i was pretty amazed by the fluidity of their control-it made me want to ride more

i live there and i wouldnt bother with season pass its too expensive and when the trails are closed to bikers its better off to buy a weekly vtt pass
