this all reminds me of when the local bus company used a lazy Spanish->Basque translation on the posters for its night bus service, proudly claiming that its buses were later than ever…

(Spanish has tarde to mean both late & not on time, but Basque has a word for each meaning)

Why bother when you can just ask STW and get 10 translations to choose from ;)

Still favouring llwybr rhannu as a shorthand way of putting the OPs llwybr defnydd a rennir. Also, the llwybr Mawddach is signed ‘mynediad a bawb’ (access for all) which carries a slightly different meaning but might work?

Rhannu (rannir) is also used to mean divide by in a maths sense (naw rhannu tri yn hafal i dri, 9/3=3) but definitely means share too.

If I was riding down a path and the sign said “llwybr cymysg”, I’d expect it to change from tarmac to gravel halfway down ;)

Can I piggyback on this. Love this Pendevig track – but can any native speakers give me a gist of what it’s about?

Not a fluent speaker by any means but I understood enough to know the bloke is professing his love for her and she’s telling him how much she hates him, a la Fairytale of New York. But the poem bit at the end (which I loved) reveals that she always loved him, as she’s crying while sewing his old shirts. That’s what I got anyway, caveat emptor. It might be a christmas song lol. Very good, though.

OP – as others have said, llywbr rhannu would get the job done. Rhannu ceir is carsharing, for e.g.

Marshall does a great job of keeping his channel enjoyable – after all, you can only watch so many 50-minute videos of full watch services, they’re largely the same to the layman. You need a backstory, and he gets that balance (pun intended) right.

I’m not appreciating – with the exception of the CW Compressor – my watches for anything other than the visual appearance

I’m largely the other way, usually can’t see half the things that aesthetes talk about (hence buying a yellow moonswatch…), but can lose hours in something like the satisfying mechanical click of the chrono button on a Speedy, the way the hand resets, the rattliness of a well-worn 50 year old jubilee bracelet, or that almost musical sound a movement makes when beating in a small steel case with a plain caseback.

Nice Seiko auto story here too:

I’ve just (well, have to wait til Xmas morning) joined the ranks of Moonswatch owners. Passing the Swatch store in Bordeaux yesterday, saw some in the window and decided Papa Noel would be bringing me the yellow one. Yellow is a bit out there, but it was the most “Swatch” one for me & have already got a non-plastic Speedy, didn’t see the point in getting a similar metallic colour.

And the replacement NH35 movement for my Seiko 5 arrived this morning. Once I’ve put it in, that’s N+2 for me, may have to thin the herd…

Took my class of 9yos down to watch the Vuelta pass through, from a bridge over the main road. Bunch goes under, then the team cars, but the biggest cheer of the day was for the rider at the back with his todger out having a wee.

I remember when F500 was just a lousy patch! Was properly training back then, we’d do it in imperial in the Basque hills! 2014 I think, I finished it in two rides. The bloke who clocked the most miles was in Florida iirc and was climbing something ridiculous like 2 metres elevation on every ride

don’t think anybody knows all the words to any National Anthem do they

I know most of Hen Wlad fy Nhadau and I’m not even Welsh. Although it’s a tune you tend to hear in other contexts whereas GSTK is just cringeworthy (as are most anthems imo). O bydded yr hen iaith barhau!

Used to shoot loads of film pre lockdown, during which my chemicals expired and the price of film went up. Haven’t got back into it yet.

My 2p: even if she’s got Canon lenses, don’t discount Pentax etc. What do you need, other than a 35 and 50 prime? As others have said, if you could find an (eg) OM1 with its kit prime, it’s far more rewarding an experience than an EOS in manual mode.

What is she doing about developing & enlarging (or scanning?)

Dump Pivac and get a random person off the street to do the job

    Rassie might be available soon…

Cheers. Would like to swap the dial & hands too, but it has this kind of stepped/recessed dial going on, not sure what the options are.

@Mikkel – nice work on the Seiko. What movement did you use? NH35?
I was thinking of doing the same on my old 5 Sport, the hairspring is bent and although it could be fixed, I’d rather swap the movement to get hacking/handwinding

Liking the Oysterdate. 34mm is my sweet spot I think – I’ve got a 1007 from ’63, also on a raffles bracelet for the same reason. Looks briefly tiny after wearing a 42mm chrono for a while but I prefer the size.

NHS No. = DVLA No. = Passport No. = NI No. = FAC No. = Travel Pass No. = Library Card No.

That’s pretty much how it works here in Spain where ID cards are compulsory.

Surely the answer to the 5K question is a Grand Seiko? That must narrow it down a bit ;)

Agreed – you want to keep a watch like that as original as possible and I’ve heard Rolex like to replace period parts. I’d resist getting it polished too, tbh.

Ironically the daily beater I wear to work is the only one I’d be upset to lose as it was my dad’s. Don’t think muggers target 2000’s Seiko chronos though!

My “posh” watches tend to go under the radar as they’re thirty-odd millimetre, usually on natos. I don’t have the funds nor the cojones to wear a big shiny two-tone diver on a bracelet, but if I did, I would probably keep it in a safe and wear a Chinese rep around town!

TBH those articles that Edukator linked – you could substiture “watches” for “MTBs” and it would still make depressingly familiar reading.

Why should we keep languages alive?

Simply, it means everything to its speakers. My son’s grandparents were among the founders of an illegal Basque school under Franco, where teaching in Basque would land you in prison. The school started in a basement, and now has over 2000 students including my son. Spanish is taught as a foreign language at age 8.

Ive also met people in Wales and abroad, and once you’ve had a conversation in Welsh, the contact is often maintained. The connection goes deeper and is something that people who solely speak English can often miss.

Any recommendations for a site? I’ve seen this one but not sure how to gauge what the quality would be like
    https://www.moon-watch.co/
I reckon the images are of the genuine products not the replicas. It’s still a chunk of change to spend on something that could turn out to be terrible – not sure what comeback I would have.
“it doesn’t look like the original”
    “It’s a fake”
    “yeah, fair enough”

There are better sites for reps which I won’t link to as probably illegal.
You generally choose what you want, pay (eg paypal f&f, bank xfer or crypto) and a few days later you get some “QC” photos to sign off on. The watch turns up in a month or so, if not seized by HM customs.
Some models are scarily close to Gen, and you’ll pay 500$ and up. Others always look wrong. Speedy is a good example – there’s no replica movement with the chrono dials the right spacing apart – the cheapo quartz ones from DH Gate are about the closest.

If you legit do want one just to try out, then you will recoup most of the cash when you sell it on in good nick on one of the enthusiast forums, as people would rather buy used rather than risk it.

I don’t condone any of this, just find it fascinating.

Family Cat is the only other band to give me that nostalgic feeling.

Hang on a sec. I saw those at a festival (quick google – Reading ’91) and after listening to the album to death afterwards, literally hadn’t thought of them since. Just put Final Mistake on YT and can remember every single line! Could probably still play Albert Hoffman’s Bike on guitar…

    Also, Seers, Sofahead, Silverfish…

There is, or was, a government funded discount on Spanish fuel? You get 20% off pump price at the till. Haven’t bought any for a month or so, but that was the case last time

Quite different to the dals I make so I’ll give it a whirl. I like to slightly burn the garlic – guess you could roast it beforehand with the veg, too.

While at the Indian supermarket, pick up some different lentils to play with (I like a 50/50 mix of masoor and moong, or toor/tuvar for a bit more bite, or push the boat out with Chevti – masoor, moong, chana and urad dals). Pre bought naans are usually rubbish, so buy a bag of atta and a tawa to make fresh chapathis or rotli…

Not thinking of cutting these, but perhaps the most left field of my subs, given that I visit the UK once a year if that:

    OS Mapping premium: 30GBP/year
    Online Welsh course: 99/yr
Plus VPNs to watch NRL & Superleague matches

They’re safe for now as we don’t have heating in our flat, but if we did it’d be a different story…

Can someone explain what the point of a “naked” bike is?

About to change the plugs and check the valves on my ZZR 14, which is when I wish I had a naked bike

Those glasses are also used to serve about a finger of “tinto del año” ie young wine. For when you’re “poteando” from bar to bar. When I first came to Spain they cost 0.20€ each but I imagine they cost a wee bit more now!

Btw did you come across the drinking fountain that serves free wine for Camino walkers?

A shot of brandy in the double espresso in a cafe in the morning, set the day up nicely!

This is the carajillo. Worrying when you see on-duty cops drinking them at 7am…
That said, the Spanish (generally speaking) have a different relationship with drinking – a midmorning beer on a café terrace looks bad to British eyes, but doesn’t lead to an all day sesh. When you go out together, you’re not getting a round every 20 minutes – there can be empty glasses on the table for half an hour before getting the next round. People leave half a bottle of wine after their menu del día. Etc.

I’ve a 11 pro and a Samsung tablet – I feel the Android OS is better for me. But Apple hardware is just so good – I’ve not seen an Android phone that feels as solid as an iPhone, and has the same(ish) specs in a small(ish) form factor.

Plus, I carry the phone when i’m out hill running in a waist belt where it sits for hours in warm salty sweat, and – touch wood – seems totally unbothered about that

When I went self employed in Spain I just signed up for an online gestor (cabinet d’affaires?). They did the equivalent of VAT, PAYE, NI etc for about 30eur a month. It’s not complicated and I do it all myself now, but it was money well spent at the beginning.

Real or imagined, the danger of getting trodden on in my bivvy by the feral ponies that are common around these parts does tend to play on my mind but I still prefer it. Plenty of places I could use a hammock though, so I should try it at some point.

they’d be griffons, nearly 3m across. I surprised about 6 of them dining on a Pottoka pony, coming from downwind, so was quite close when all of them took off at once. The force was incredible!

Ainsa isn’t a bad call. Traditionally it’s been 2nd home territory so no bargains on the real estate, but I imagine a lot of people are trying to downsize or offload in the current climate. I love the town and the surroundings but the thought of living there in winter…. uff…

I’m 15 years in Pais Vasco. Recommended if you like proper weather/seasons (for better or for worse) and super technical riding. No expat communities either, thankfully. Not leaving here for anything!

Fondled a Ranger a couple of weeks back in Bordeaux. Nice enough but the numbers looked weird, and the lume colour on them didn’t quite match the hands. Unless it was my eyes. Looked great on the khaki NATO though.

The BB36 remains my “if you could only have one” watch. Right size for me, plus a Tudor should have snowflake hands ;)
