My cousin is a ‘Personal Banker’ in Zurich. He is firmly of the mind-set that paying taxes is only for ‘the little people’.

Some **** once built a 2′ high drystone wall around my MG; I had apparently parked in ‘Their’ spot.

I had them on my last car, a 520d Touring, 245 tyres. They were amazing for getting you out of trouble, but wore quickly when driven on tarmac – as you’d expect. I tackled some steep snowed up hills & they got me to the top.

They were OK to fit, but absolute gits to get off though.

I never had any for the front & that didn’t seem to be a problem

When my Dad died the kids were pretty unmoved, they were frightened over how upset I was though.

Architects will provide as much detail as you pay them for. Accept a too-low price, and they will be reluctant to provide detail.

(The horse has bolted, you should have asked him/ her for drawings & specification sufficiently detailed for Builders to give a fixed price, and for Building control to pass the designs.)

Builders love vagueness, and hate detail. Detail means they have little opportunity to ask for more money. (“Well, now you’ve gone and told me you want glass in the windows, that’s going to be extra my man”).

As with Architects, don’t accept a stupidly low price from a builder, and expect there to be no arguments.

The public tends to get the Building Industry it deserves. The designer/ contractor selection is often made on the basis of price, the criticisms are made on the basis of quality.

Choose companies with a reputation to uphold.

20 years. I’ve changed jobs three times so far (within a big multi-national). Made Director 5 yrs ago, which is nice but the feet are itching again. Time for a change.

What sort of redundancy package might you be walking away from? Vs losing the opportunity presented by the two other jobs.

Go for the interviews & consider again if you are sucessful.

I really hate to say this, but a mate was in the same situation. He wouldn’t move out and his barmy wife made his life hell. (E.g she would call the police in the middle of the night and have him arrested).

They separated/ divorced, and once she’d got what she wanted then she wheeled out the bloke she’d been seeing (apparently for a couple of years.)

I know of another similar case with a guy at work.

Tread really carefully. The police & courts always seem to want to believe the wife over the husband.

If it starts to go down that route, keep a diary of it all, record conversations, have witnesses

    I really hope I’m wrong.

    Best wishes.

I agree that the new on-line interface is a bit crap, but at 8am one Sunday last winter in Chambery, when my credit card got refused, it was priceless the looks on the Hire car Froggie’s faces when I said ‘No problem’, rang First Direct and they instantly approved the payment.

First Direct are pretty hard to beat I think.

Speak with a plasterer. You might be best using Renovating Plaster. This doesn’t use gypsum and is able to cope with high moisture levels without disintegrating.

If the floor really is a couple of centimetres thick, it’s more likely to be some sort of self levelling screed. If so, the finish will not be hardwearing or particularity good (it’s designed to be covered – carpets/ vinyl etc)

If it really is concrete, ask for the floor to power floated.(It’s not a DIY type job and can take all night to get right)

If you want it to look like a warehouse floor they’ll need to add ‘dry shake’ to the wet concrete – this is getting into quite specialist territory though.

I think you need to consider that he would probably rather do something with you (and your sibs/ kids) rather than alone.

Red-letter days, or similar, can be an imposition unless he’s really into it.

Why not pay for him to join you (all) for a night away in London/ the Countryside etc

I don’t like the way they refer to themselves as ‘Inspectors’ or ‘Officers’ and wear those navy blue jerseys with epaulettes, like they’re Police or Army.

I live in Rural Derbyshire, no one here has any time for them, they opened a charity shop in the town which was later closed; apparently little interest (The whinging statement they made to the local rag about how the town doesn’t care about animals etc got a lot of people’s backs up as well)

I found my children pretty unrewarding and unlovable when they were babies. At 6 months they started to get more interesting, & I became more attached. From 1 year on I became absorbed.

It’s always going to be difficult with the first one, it means such a huge change in your circumstances.

Keep on keeping on. It’s all you can do.

I can’t watch it. The accents are too far off and I find them irritating to listen to.

Shame, what little I’ve seen of it looks excellent otherwise.

(I like Brummie/ Black Country etc accents)

I think most enthusiasts magazines are great when you’re a beginner/ getting into a new sport. Once you know what you’re doing they’re a waste of money.

(That said, I subscribe to Singletrack. The photos are stunning and the in-depth articles very absorbing. As noted above, Singletrack is ‘different’)

Is it worth getting a colour printer that uses toner rather than ink?

(The replacement cartridges are expensive, but do they last longer?
