Better?: Has anyone seen a serious review or managed to get a proper test ride?

The Codeine looks very good. I’m just trying to confirm if it will suit me. The cool kids in the vids ride a lot better than I can and ever will :-)

I’ve demoed half a dozen full suss 29ers and felt comfy on them once I adapted to the bigger wheels needing a bit more effort to get the into the corners. Being lanky helped I reckon.

As you are around Brant I looked at the geometry of the large frame; added the chainstay length and the stack to get a wheelbase of 1097mm. Is that correct calculation? I ask as it’s about 100mm shorter than the other bikes on my list and over 200mm shorter than the Kona Process XL.

    Thanks

    Andrew.

I ordered the Trail Extreme Folding Bead Dual compound tyres.

I’ll let you know how she gets on with them.

    Thanks again,

    Andrew.

Thanks for all the responses and apologies for the delayed response. I don’t get any time at weekends for this sort of stuff.

Confidence: Yes. Tyres will help as the bike won’t slide around as much. I’m trying to boost her confidence. Fact is she need to get out and ride more. If new tyres can help her confidence (placebo effect?) then she’ll feel safer and then ride more and get better etc. As for mixing; I want to ride more and this is one way of doing it without complaints… :-)

I’ll hang onto the old tyres for winter training rides but thanks for the offer.

I’ll try bigger tyres with lower pressures. I’ll stick some DH tubes in first (if available). I don’t think her wheels are tubeless ready.

I’ll check out the tyre suggestions and the offers.

    Many thanks.

Forestry Commission web site says some is closed. Anything major that would spoil a day out?

    Yes. They are good IMO.

I put some V2s with 203mm rotors on my Prophet for an Alps trip and they were flawless.

I am heavy with the brakes and the Juicy 7s that I had before would fade on long descents – scary at times….

And they are a British company, keeping British folk in jobs.

Thanks Benman. White Peak is good. Been walking there a few times.

I was planning on riding Skyline before it shuts.

Is it still open and relatively complete?

I hear that there was quite a lot of fire road originally so hoping that the single track hasn’t been diverted to fire road.

    What you got then Croc?

I’m riding the Quantock Hills on Good Friday. Highly anticipated ride.

yay! I’m 48 and had the same doubts as the original poster. Gladdend to see that folk older than me are still getting out. I suppose the secret is to stay fit and not pick up needless injuries that might last so long as it seriously affects fitness.

That said, I was at Cwm Carn the other day….

Word of warning – It might just be me and my mate, but the tablets with caffiene sent us through the roof. We popped a few in our hydration packs one evening and after the ride I just could not sleep. 1 a.m. came an went and when I did finally nod off sleep was full of dreams and not restful. I was knackered the next day.

Def an early morning thing or for those on 24 hour rides.

When out riding I sweat lots and without these tablets I get bad cramp, so I totally recommend them. No energy as such which is also good for me as I’m trying to shed some wobbly bits.

My previous post-ride electrolyte drink consisted of a teaspoon of salt in a pint glass half filled with water and the other half orange juice. This worked too but not sure how healthy it is.

I prefer citrus flavour and as there are no carbs in the tablets the water reservoir doesn’t go rank between rides.

    I’m 6 3 and also got a large Soul with a shortish – 60mm – stem

I had a long chat with Cy before I bought. He is of similar dimensions as I am and he rides a large.

I also arranged with my LBS to demo one. Took it to Glentress and felt immediately at home one it.

I managed to get the Mud X’s on at the weekend. Here is a size comparison between the Maxxis High-Roller 2.35 and the Mud X 2.0

My fork and wheel are brand new.

Tried the maxle from the pike and it has the same problem with the Revelations and the hub.

Not tried removing any paint as yet, but I believe that there is an alignment issue.

    I think I’ll ask Hope….

Yes. It’s a lite and it’s a lot stiffer than the maxle on my Pikes ….

It’s so stiff that I can hardly thread it in.

    Thanks for all the replies.

A quick count has Mud X well ahead with Swampthing second.

As Mud X are also cheaper I’ll try those first. I post an update next week.

If you want a good look around you should try the Reservoir Goats: http://www.reservoirgoats.co.uk/

More laid back than the Cyclones….. and much more variety of riding.

    IMO

SpokeBloke – I would be good to have company and someone that knows the way. Where shall we meet?

zomersetglider – That sounds like a good idea…. I think we’ve already met. [You ride an orange (coloured) harttail?] Last night and a few Thursdays ago. Is there car parking near the start?

Do cars get broken into there? Should I worry?
Not much in mine but that won’t necessarily stop someone breaking in for a closer look….

also, driving down from UWE – how much time should I allow for traffic?

I assume that my hardtail will be up to the route?

I’ll be driving down from UWE area. Is this the start location?:http://goo.gl/maps/gVKR

Many thanks. Probably should have mentioned that the big ring is actually the middle ring, but I expect that won't make any difference.

Despite it being wrong I had no problems with it over the weekend. Still needs fixing tho.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I took it to my LBS and he agreed that it wasn't right. He inspected the hub for play and it was fine.

He added some spacers from a 10 spreed road cassette. This reduced the wobble but didn't eliminate it. Tried a new cassette. No improvement.

As I was rushing off for the weekend I took the wheel with my old cassette and the spacers. The first time I tried to pedal it jumped all over, but it was soon fixed with a few turns on the barrel. Rode the bike hard over the weekend without any problems. :-D

Also, after I mentioned the Mavic extra-wide hub feature, he had a look in the Mavic catalogue and found a spacer that fits the grooves on the hub so hopefully, even the remaining wobble will be eliminated.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

Can't be sure if whole hub is moving. Looks like cassette only.

    Chain is brand new.
Entire wheel is a Mavic Crossmax ST

The cassette also rotates (clockwise and then back) a bit when the chain bounces up and down (a la chain slap). Is this normal? I only noticed it on the new bike (pre-used drivetrain, except chain which is new).

I have a similar problem on my bike too. My rear mech flaps about on even the slightest of rough ground, i.e. cobbles and makes lots of rattles.

The spring does seem to have lost it's spring. Hoping that I can find a spring instead of changing the whole mech…. it's XTR :-(

Yes 9mm to 20mm. What about a replacement hub? That would mean new spokes too I presume?

Don't check your weight, check the flabby bits….

Your belt is a much better indicator than your scales.

Unless you are trying to put muscle on, forget the protein shakes because (as Mrs Walmsley told me in O Level biology) protein that is not used to repair the body or build new tissue is converted to fat….

I'm 6ft3in (and shrinking….) and I demoed a large Soul at Glentress in February. It was the same bike as reviewed at Bike Magic.

To me, the ride seemed perfect. I'm quite a nervous rider but the Soul made me feel very safe and in control even at Glentress. Whizzed up the hills too…

My new Soul is due in May sometime.
