Just did an FTP test. 270 becomes 225! The 270 has been achieved through races where I’d say the psychological side of that pushes me on more than I could muster doing the boring test itself. So taking that into account maybe I could add another 5-10 watts on perhaps if I’m being generous. So ballpark 35-45 watts down – 15% ish.

Ok, sounds like my suspicions were right and I haven’t just cocked up the setup. Sounds like an FTP test is in order.

Funny because I’ve been doing the 100 days to xmas challenge and had increased my ftp by about 30 watts and looks like this is going to take me back to where I started! It’s no bother though, it’s all relative and just have to re-calibrate to the new normal.

My turbo has just died. Been thinking about an upgrade anyway. Anyone seen any deals. Saris H3 for £404 looking like a decent deal from Sigma but anything better anyone seen?

Falls into the same category for me as STW subscription. In itself, it’s questionable that it’s worth it. But then again when I think that it’s what I use to track rides, find trails, follow routes, ‘social media’ of seeing what friends are up to, a bit of the training stuff….I’d defo miss it if it went under. So I’m happy to pay up.

Zwift tonight. Handful of gravel ride. Awful course with 3 laps of a boring loop with one big climb and one decent. Still, 50 mins ticked off.

Still going pretty well here. Friday Zwift race. Saturday an hours MTB with Mrs Blitz and then Sunday morning another solo hour on the MTB with a walk around St Andrews with the family in the afternoon. This evening just done another Zwift race.

Feels like a good time to summarise my experience so far. I’ve found it generally ok to fit the exercise in. Missed 2 days overall, both through unforeseen issues that made it tricky rather than just not being arsed, so pleased with that.

I’m definitely feeling fitter. I started on Zwift racing cat D and was pretty quickly top end of that category and bumped up to C. I struggled a bit initially in C but more recently I’m starting to be able to keep pace better and the last few races I’m generally able to stay near to the lead pack and end up finishing top 25/30%. My FTP has gone up from around 220 to 270.

My main issue is I’m just perma-hungry and snacking too much! I’ve lost no weight at all. In fact I put weight on on holiday last month (all inclusive) and have not quite got all of that increase off yet so probably a pound or two heavier than at the start. I need to keep the exercise going but have more self control with food as I’m not where I need to be weight wise. Overall though things are moving slowly in the right direction.

Pharmacist here. Firstly, sorry to hear this has happened and hope your mother in law is on the road to recovery from what she has experienced. It does appear to be a fairly clear case of negligence causing harm. Also agree that if this was assessed and given a risk score in a system like DATIX it should be high enough to warrant thorough investigation. My main issue here is the brushing off of it by the doctor.

As for the error itself, I have actually seen an almost carbon copy of this error happen before. I was working in medicines information at a community trust and got asked for advice about potential adverse effects from a patient being given a dose of hydrocortisone intramuscularly instead of hydroxocobalamin (B12). In this case the patient suffered no harm but it was fully investigated and I expect there will be many parallels with your incident.

As alluded to by scardypants, the medicines would most likely be located next to each other on the dispensary shelf and it would be a picking error by a dispenser. The pharmacist should of course have picked the labelling error up when it was second checked, which I am almost certain it will have been, although obviously not to the right standard in this case.

Checking dispensed medication is a horrible combination of being a high volume repetitive task that is being done in a highly pressured environment with lots of interruptions and distractions, but where you need to be very focussed and accurate. I have made checking errors in the past and when they come back and you look at them in the cold light of day, you wonder how you missed it, but then you think back to the environment and what was going on at the time and then you realise how these things occur. My first question would always be ‘is the patient ok’…and then you pray. I’ve been lucky but that’s all it is. I think published error rates for dispensary accuracy checking are about 1% but with the pressures on the health service, which are as severe in pharmacy as anywhere else, you might expect that to creep up.

It will most likely be the same story with the nurse. You will probably be aware in the news of all the pressures in the ambulance service and hospitals with bed blocking, so there will be a huge push to get patients out into the community to be managed by district nurses. I don’t know for sure, as not worked in that sector for a few years, but I would be fairly confident that the numbers of visits DNs are expected to do in a day will be going up and up and again you might expect to see error rates rise.

There is something called the Swiss cheese error theory. Each check in a process is a defence against an error occurring but they are not perfect and are likened to a slice of Swiss cheese with holes in. If an error is made in one check and it gets through a hole in the Swiss cheese, then it usually gets stopped by the next one. Errors like this occur when all the holes line up. As pressures grow, sadly there are more holes and they’re getting bigger.

Of course none of what I have described above is to excuse what has happened but just to give some context as to what might have been factors. It does need to be investigated to identify any systems issues that can be addressed at a minimum. As you have have suffered quantifiable financial loss as a result of the error then you have every right to pursue that so you can be compensated. How hard I would pursue I think would depend on the responses from the organisations and individuals involved. I would expect the pharmacist and nurse to be mortified, as I would be. I would be concerned if there was any attempt to brush it off rather than to express sincere regret and to apologise and look to what lessons could be learned.

Sorry again to hear of this and hope you get to a resolution and that your mother in law is ok.

I ordered a set of road wheels and a gravel set. Both on hold. The road wheels mentioned this in the listing that they were waiting on hubs so would be end of nov. Had an email the day after ordering the gravel wheels to say they had run out of QR adaptors and were expecting more in 2-3 weeks. Not too fussed given then price. Happy to wait.

I love them. Never failed to keep my feet dry in a year of riding in them. Just do the job exactly as you’d hope. I didn’t wear them in the summer as they would be too hot and not needed but for anything else they’re spot on.

Sizing wise, I went up half a size from normal which has been perfect for pairing with thicker winter socks. I reckon just getting my normal size would also have been fine if wearing thinner socks.

Bit undecided here on the overshoes vs boots debate. I do get it that long term, winter boots are probably worth the investment, but I’ve already got goretex five tens for MTB’ing on flats and wasn’t really planning on forking that kind of money out when I really don’t do that much road/gravel biking when they would be needed. Equally some of these overshoes are £30-40 and may not last. I’m erring towards the cheaper end and just expect to get a winter out of them. Maybe 🤔

Second fail on Friday 😔 Wife’s car broke down so had to drive out to meet her and get that sorted and then girls had swimming club championships so the day just got away from me.

This morning was supposed to be a road ride with the cycling club but wet and cold so took the gravel bike out for a spin instead.

Not sure I’m blacklisted but we live a mile and half down a dead end single track lane and seems UPS just CBA bothering with us as last two parcels have just been dumped at the local drop off point at the newsagent in the village. Only found out by checking tracking when it was a few days overdue. DHL seem ok.

Had my first blip last Friday. A forced last minute change of plans meant I couldn’t get out in the evening as expected and ran out of time to do anything. Saturday was a 28 mile social ride with the cycling club. Sunday started with some garden work, ripping out a rotten old wooden swing seat that came with the house and digging some foundations for an outbuilding. Then in the afternoon had a lovely local MTB ride testing out new winter tyre combo. Yesterday was an hour and a bit walking around guising with the kids.

I think the quickest route would be independent Scotland > rejoins EU > makes the case clear by doing proportionally well vs rUK. In England Labour wins next GE and remains in power for 2 terms, gradually rows it back e.g by rejoining the customs union, then maybe towards the end of the second term they could go back in using Scotland’s success as the justification. Not saying any of that will happen, but would be the quickest plausible way I can think it might. I do think over that timescale the EU would welcome rUK back but not on same terms as before.

I’ve had an Aggaro on the front with a Mezcal rear for a few months now and in the dry it’s been an awesome fast combo. The Aggaro is IMO what the dissector wants to be but is better. I really like it. The mezcal is sketchy as in the wet though so I’ve picked up a Mazza (R2 bike have them pretty cheap) and going to try Mazza front and Aggaro rear now the weather is turning. Reckon that might be a good all conditions combo. Becoming a big fan of Vittoria’s.

Still going well here. Saturday 4.5 mile run. Sunday flew to crete after an early start but did a 30 min sea swim in the afternoon. Monday 30 minutes of lengths in the 50m pool including getting rinsed by my 11 year old daughter in a 50m race. She swims for a club and has far better technique than me but I’ve previously been able to beat her with just power, but not now over 50m! Got smashed! Yesterday nice 5k run first thing along the coast. Today hit the hotel gym for an hour, mostly on the bike.

What about looking at a role in electronic prescribing? I’m a pharmacist and like you was getting burnt out in a clinical role in the NHS. Moved into an electronic prescribing role 18 months ago and has been the best career move i’ve made. Can still use my clinical experience but now work in a small team working to roll out electronic prescribing in the north of Scotland. I really enjoy it. We have nurses in the teams across the regions too. Our nurse still does some bank shifts to keep her hand in. If IT is a passion then it could be a good way of moving into it without wholesale retraining. Can give more details if you want.

As above alloy vs steel but otherwise pretty much the same bike by all accounts. On the tyre clearance point I’ve got a big dog and have run 2.6 mezcals front and rear so plenty of clearance.

Velo hinge might be worth a look if the space would benefit from the bike being able to be hinged towards the wall and then out again for removal? Probably not such a benefit if only one bike? Works well in my bike storage room but I’ve got multiple bikes along one wall.

I’ve got 4 montane jackets – prism, hydrogen direct, extreme and a fleet waterproof.

The prism is by far the most versatile and gets the most use. As above needs layers in colder weather but it’s cut a bit roomier so works well for that. It’s my go to for most conditions. Packs pretty small too if needed. Brilliant jackets.

    Congrats Stanley!

Still going well here – mostly zwift this last week with the odd 5k run. Had a brilliant zwift race yesterday and felt really strong but just did one this morning and legs were pretty dead. Away to Crete this weekend but hotel has a gym so will keep it going doing that, or running/swimming.

Sorry I missed your earlier response. Yep that was me, thanks for your help on the day. We had a great team and received some great feedback about the day

Still struggle to see the appeal of cross racing myself, looks miserable!😂 but lots of folks seemed to have a great time which is what counts.

No worries, enjoyed it and the event seemed to be well received as you say. Nice to meet you.

Yeah, not sure CX it’s for me either but enjoyed watching!

I’ve had an Escarpe CRX for 18 months (the black and speckled gold one). It is a superb bike. Definitely don’t think the head angle feels steep but I was coming into it from a bike with a 67 degree head angle. It descends really well and agree that it’s a great technical climber. The geometry is spot on.

It can feel a bit sluggish to me on fire road type climbs if running something like minions. I put an Aggaro/Mezcal combo in 2.6 flavour on it towards the end of the summer and that livened it up a lot on dry trails but the mezcal doesn’t cope in the wet.

On the four pot front, two pot rear issue, I had the dreaded shimano microleak on the rear two pots in the first few months of owning it. But to their credit chainreaction sorted it easily. It was during the covid supply disruptions and they didn’t have stock of the two pot rears so they gave me a budget of up to £80 I think it was to replace the caliper from elsewhere and I managed to get an SLX four pot instead which has been faultless so now running four pots both ends which does work better IMO.

It’s been solid too. No issues with it all (other than the caliper, which isn’t vitus’s issue). Haven’t really had to touch it otherwise bar usual maintenance.

When I say organising, I’m chief carrier and layer out of stakes/general gopher. Have only been at one cx race before so I’m leaving it up to my mate Paul to tell me what I need to be doing

Not entirely sure I get the appeal of cross racing myself, but we have 350 odd entries this year so it’s been reasonably popular.

Not posted since this started but going really well and starting to see noticable fitness gains already. I’ve managed to mix up road, gravel, mtb and zwift rides with a few 5k ish runs and one walk. At the weekend I went out for a road ride on sat and MTB on sunday and felt strong on both picking up plenty of strava PBs.

Only had one day which was a real struggle. Late home after work and being dad taxi for my daughter’s evening activities. Really didn’t want to do anything, but forced myself on to the turbo and did a 30 min training session.

Just got to keep it going…

I’d like to give it a go. Tried a couple of years ago and made it to about 60 days and then the wheels came off for some reason. Last year we were moving house and so didn’t even contemplate it. Feeling like I have the capacity and desire to give it a good go this year.
