Just wanted to say thanks again for the advice. We had a great week and managed to fit in much of the recommendations above.

With the family we explored the area – really liked Melrose and Peebles in particular and Edinburgh was great of course. Enjoyed a beach trip to North Berwick too. Did the grey mares tail hike to loch skeen. Pretty stunning. Kids did well and were rewarded with the Moffat toffee trip! Visited the polish map of Scotland but couldn’t get in to the horseshoe inn as fully booked.

As for the riding, did the blue and red at Glentress and enjoyed both. Also rode at Innerleithen. Did the red xc climb but cut across a forest road and picked up angry sheep and green wing. Enjoyed both but particularly angry sheep. They were a good suggestion as they were about my comfort level. There looked to be some pretty full on lines there. It’s a steep hill!

Loved the area and we had pretty good weather. Some stunning autumnal scenery. Had some interesting ‘could we live here’ conversations!

I’d like to get out on my own if possible. Apart from the Monday/Tuesday in Edinburgh we’ve got little in the way of firm plans. As for riding, like a bit of everything really. Went to Comrie last year and loved the blue and red there, so anything like that really?

    Thanks, some great advice there.

We have already got a night away in Edinburgh planned for Monday.

Happy to use the car to visit other places. Just had a quick look at grey mares tail and looks great so may well do that.

Will check out the other suggestions too.

    Thanks again

Oh and also, have choice of DHF or Shorty front. What would you have on?

That’s really helpful. The buzzrack bb4 I’ve just got is 93cm depth. I’ve also just searched in more detail for the weights of the rack and our bikes and now think my total is a bit lower at around 61kg. If I take the COG to be about 40cm from the ball (with more of the weight towards the car by loading the adult bikes nearest), then it’s looking right on the limit!

Just bought a Buzzrack BB4 for about £150 from probikekit after finding a 10% code. Not used yet though but will be later this week.

Regarding nose weight, our car is rated to 75kg, but are we saying that it will definitely be less if used for a bike rack? If so, ball park how much are we taking? The manual doesn’t say anything about bike racks. The rack is 17kg, our two MTBs are about 27kg and then got two kids bike an orbea Mx 24 and an islabike beinn 20. Probably another 22kg there? So maybe 66kg all in?

Big dog frame in raw phosphate ordered. Never built a bike up from frame only before and fancy it as a winter project. Plan to buy a few bits each month and raid the spares box and see what happens. Will be using it for local trails, bit of bikepacking and as a general run around town bike so hopefully can pick up some bargain parts and go from there.

I work for an NHS trust and in my previous role was responsible for my departments education allocation and applications. E&T budgets for the NHS these days are next to nothing. Our Trusts worked at £15 per head per year!

So it was rationed on case by case basis with a panel assessing. Basically if it was essential to role it would be 100% funded inc expenses. Identified in PDP it would generally be 50-75% funded from the E&T budget and the other 25-50% either from the departments own budget or from the individual. Purely CPD would be pretty much unfunded unless you were lucky at the end of the financial year and there was a pot with some budget left that could be moved around.

Exactly the same as Whitestone for me. XT shifter and mech. Sunrace cassette and KMC chain. Shifts great and no problems over the last 2 years with this setup.

Recently got one of these for bikepacking. Used it once so far and found it really comfortable. Packs down really small too.

Nope. Cheers. Will look on there. Only other places I’ve looked are Airbnb, booking.com and homeaway.

Sunrace 11-50 cassette will get you almost eagle range and will be far cheaper if you just want to go 1 x 11.

Just to add that I renewed mine recently via the online service. You still have to send the old passport back via post which I did first class signed for, but I had the new passport back in 6 days and had text updates throughout. Was impressed!

Check out the your parking space app. Used it for a stay in Brighton a while ago. We got cheap use of a space round the back of the Phoenix art building near St. Peter’s church. Was waaaaay cheaper than the NCPs etc.

I’ve just gone the other way from BH59 to BH90. I upgraded a leaking set of 2-pot calipers with 59 hoses to the new deore 4-pots which should in theory be paired with BH90s. I started off using the 59s that I already had with the new calipers and they seemed fine but had a little dead travel. Just swapped them for the 90s and can barely tell the difference, probably not more than 5% in it. Id say the 59s will be fine.

I love my Occam AM. Had mine for 2 years now. Mine is the carbon version too but 140mm each end. It’s a perfect do it all bike IMO. I think your first impressions are exactly how I felt about it and still do. It’s light, poppy and turns well so copes great with the local xc stuff near me where a lot of bikes with this travel might feel sluggish. However I’ve taken it to wales and the alps where it was also very at home whether on lift assisted runs or big all day rides. I’m even hoping to do some bike packing on it this year which is doable with the shock tucked away as it is.

It’s also been really reliable. Not had to do anything to it other than replace normal wear and tear bits. Great bikes. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

I got mine delivered today. Ordered Monday though as picked up the PSA from hot uk deals before it was posted on here.

The hose should have a number on it somewhere, either 90 or 59. 90 is what’s recommended but on my setup I’ve been using the 59 hose that I had as it had the right connections already I.e. straight fitting as opposed to banjo.

The 59 has a wider internal diameter so is deemed ‘standard power’ vs the 90 hose which has a narrower internal diameter and is ‘high power’. In practice the 59 works, but it does have a little dead travel at the begging of the lever throw before the power comes on and that’s about all I’ve noticed. I am just toying with swapping the hoses to the 90s before a trip to wales next month to see what difference that makes. I’ll update this if I do.

Think you should be fine with that lever. I’m using an even older M506 lever with these calipers and it works well. Just need to use the correct hose. You’ll need the BH90-SS as both the lever and caliper are the ‘straight’ fitting.

Just doing pretty much exactly that. Taken a job at a pay band lower. 5k cut and will be top of scale so no immediate prospect of further pay progression. However I enjoyed working at the grade much more than current role so doing it for a (hopefully) better work life balance. New job is closer to home, more variety, no line management below and wont have direct management on a day to day from above.

I hope it’s the right choice. Had the same worries that I could be going from the frying pan into the fire but with less money. However my gut feeling was that the new job would work out and so had to take that chance. As above, if you can pay the bills, is it worth the stress?

Been once before and did whites and Y wall. Enjoyed both but preferred whites, mainly due to the more interesting techy climb. Off there again next month. Are Blade or Skyline worth doing this time instead?

I’ve had one for a couple of years. It’s a good jacket. Comes up big for size so if you’re between, then size down.

To be honest, I don’t actually wear it much on the bike though. I run quite hot and it’s pretty warm to ride in and in Kent where I live we rarely get weather to justify it so I usually end up wearing something lighter. It has however become my main off the bike waterproof and it’s great for that.

If you’re in Kent, have a look at Perry Wood in Selling. There’s a small area with various jumps and drops you can session.

Vid here shows it quite well once you’re past the guff at the start…

Bought a copy at the airport the other day to give me something to read on the flight. Read it cover to cover and found it really enjoyable. Quite different, but good different. Expensive though.

    Comrie Croft?

Stayed there last summer with wife and 5 & 8 year old girls. Great site. Obviously you’ve got the trails there on the doorstep so if you did take a bike, you can easily fit in a quick ride without affecting family time and the trails are superb!

We also did some lovely walks. Nice walk of a few miles up to Melville’s monument has superb views.

I played a lot in my teens and twenties and loved the game but stopped playing regularly when the kids came along. Its too time consuming and the lack of flexible membership options/fee structures at most clubs means its prohibitive to anyone who can’t commit to playing at least weekly if not more often. Most won’t change though as those making the decisions would probably rather see the club fold than move into this century.

There are some forward thinking clubs but they’re in the minority. The Birkdales will be fine as there’s enough prestige there to ensure a steady stream of punters, and the well run muni’s and forward thinking clubs that embrace younger members will be ok too. It’s the ‘wannabe’ Birkdales that will go under. Good courses but without the prestige to keep enough demand. Their desire to preserve the old school traditional model will see the clubs die with their ageing memberships. Some won’t be a loss at all, but for others it will be a crying shame.

If you take away the ‘club’ side of it and focus just on the game itself, it’s a wonderful pastime. Outdoors in often beautiful surroundings, few hours with mates doing something social other than say drinking, escape from the grind, physical and mental challenge, need for self discipline, shiny things to waste your money on if you want (or not). What’s not to like.

Sprints are usually 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run, but they can differ.

My two local ones both differ. The first is an open water sea swim so the swim is knocked down to 500m and the the other has the bike ride at about 27k as it’s an out and back to a roundabout and I guess there’s no practical way to shorten it to 20k

I’ve done a few sprints in recent years. A mate who was doing them and talked me into it. I was, and still am, a below average swimmer and pretty average runner. Did a bit of training but not loads and really enjoyed the first one I did. I’ve since done a couple of local ones each year. They’re fairly expensive if you want to do them often. As above I find them very inclusive and friendly with a great atmosphere. I don’t take them seriously. I generally just try and get into a steady rhythm on the swim and don’t worry about the pace. Then hit the bike pretty hard as the standard generally isn’t great and you can make up loads of ground on the field. The run is then just a steady pace and hang on. Great feeling at the end. Definitely worth a go.

Great, thanks. I recall now you’ve got an Occam? That looks great if it fits and the hardtail option doesn’t happen. £23 seems great value.
