Reason for speed/price difference.

The speed of the chip is calculated by speed of the front side bus x a fixed multiply factor of the chip.

FSB is quad pumped so always quoted as 4x faster than reality.

So for a E8400 which is 3Ghz and 1333Mhz fsb (actually 333.33MHz) it would be 333.33 x 9 multiply factor = 2999.97MHz or 3Ghz

The cheaper chips work on an 800fsb just like your current P4 does.

The size of cache also makes a difference to he price.

Larger L2 cache is great for games but not sure what benefits normal apps.

My folks have Vista on an E2200 bsed machine and it’s not the best to be honest even with 2G of RAM.

Intel E7*** or E8*** Dual core will do you grand.

Those are about the best price/performance at the moment.

100% agree with retro it’ll be some scheduled scan or trickled DL that’s killing you, not Aero or VM.

Make sure AVG is not running a scheduled scan in the background also.

Set it to scan manual and just run it once a week when you’re not using it.

Defrag is in Programs–>accessories–>system tools

AVG doesn’t have one and neither does Defender.

Do a manual windows update to be sure it’s not that (because that’s the biggest killer).

Should be no needas it’s size is controlled by the OS by default anyway.

Do a clean-up from the system tools list and run defrag.

Make sure defrag is not set to run scheduled (like once a week) as it will kill your fun.

Make sure you’ve downloaded all the windows updates.
My laptop with Vista runs like a pig when it’s trickling updates in but goes back to noral once they’re installed.
You could turn off automatic updates and check manually one a month.

I work in the electronics industry, specifiacally in this area 😉

I have a 50″ plasma however I’d never buy a plasma over an LCD, ever.

The new LCD panels are fantastic.

Pioneer who were the largest producer of plasma panels has just pulled out of the business meaning Panasonic who use their panels (and was arguably the best plasma TV manufacturer) will also 100% switch to LCD.

The cost of running and cost of repair should make you buy LCD.

Remember DDR and DDR2 do nt work in the same board (not yours anyway) so get the right type.

Also the speed of the RAM is limited by the mobo chipset.
My guess is your is DDR400 (PC3200).
If the RAM is too fast it will just run at the max speed the chipset will allow and not cause any problems.

OK put 2G in and then come back and ask why it’s no different 😛

WCA do yourself a favour and put the RAM back in and read my post above.

I used to run my old P4 1.7G on 512 RAM and it would boot windows in about 20 seconds.

More RAM will not help you.

It just needs cleaning up (best clean obviously being format).

I’d be inclined to reinstall the OS.

But first do try a “Disk clean up” [programs->accessories->system tools->disk clean up] to make sure all the junk is removed.

Then do a defrag, found in the same place.

Also if you have anything by “Norton” on the PC, delete it ffs it kills PCs.

Go through the “add remove” programs list and take off whatever you dont need.

I’d do all that before throwing money away on RAM.
The PC should run much quicker than that even with your current amount of RAM.
