tell the mrs that they are investments, which they are.

The more folk in their 30’s/early 40’s now who have been there from the start age and get higher incomes the more they will sell for. Its got to be a better investment than an ISA. A bit like classic cars but cheaper and take less space up (but id bet they increase in value over the next 10-20 yrs more than a classic car!

What you need is some rediculously difficult peaks trails (the kind of sneaky ones not many folk know about) to get you spitting and swearing again.

You are prob just bored of what you ride. Let us know if you fancy hurting yourself in the peaks or saddleworth (North of the peaks) at some point

If this arguement stood then all trails would surely be huge, like 50m wide! They arent as it constantly grows back where it doesnt get ridden.

What is of more concern is paving the trails with slabs. Now that should be banned, trail destruction at its worst. Who wants this? Walkers, Riders, Horsey folk??? None of the above id say. Even walkers would get bored to hell of walking along sanitised trails

The lowdown on pads is that for a start there are only 3 manufacturers of pads worldwide, one being Shimano, the other two being taiwanese companies, one of which superstar use.

The wrond formula of glue was used about 4 yrs back and where possible they were recalled, but not all had batch numbers on so all the companies affected did the good thing and offered free replacements.

Winter wet weather kills all pads if they get rusty which is only to be expected.

If you want your pads to last there is one simple rule to follow and a couple of things that you can do to make them last longer.

Firstly never put a new set in in mid winter on a cold wet ride and expect them to last, they wont.

If you want them to last get them glowing (alpine descents) in the summer and then swap them for another set and repeat. The heat generated causes them to bond and harden, so do this to stock up pads for winter use and they will last longer.

Alternatively, bake them in the oven before use!

It all boils down to the heat they are initially baked at, cheaper ones get less heat for less time, fibrax being the worst culprit for being tight.

Lastly, always carry a spare set as you never know when you need them!

    Hope that helps

AH right, I noticed that bridleway that goes over west fell but it seemed to go nowhere, however looking at aerial photos i can see that it does infact continue from the calf trig point.

So what would you recommend as a loop that goes over twice. I have done it n-s, around to the west and then down bowderdale. Whats the best way to get down from the calf heading south?

To get in/out of manchester off road basically take the canal toward the city of Manc stadium, through the cemetry, round the abbortoir and into clayton vale park, then follow the Medlock Vally all the way over the M60 and to Daisy Nook, go to Park Bridge then follow the map and this is a ride to do once you get out of Manc to Mossley

If you want to try saddleworth then give this one a go as a start

Saddleworth is a difficult one and you need to really know where to go first or do a lot of discovery rides. There is a lot of stuff that is top notch but you need to do some cheeky trails to get to a lot of it. Folk aren’t really bothered as it doesnt get a fraction of the foot traffic that the peaks does

See how you get on with this one and then maybes try riding off road to Mossley then on from manchester city centre up the medlock valley. Start on the canal at Castlefield, go to manchester city ground and ride through the graveyard past the old abbortoir then up the medlock valley and keep going to daisy nook, then park bridge, over hartshead pike then down into Mossley. From there you can do a loop round the trig point out back of Stalybridge or head up into saddleworth and do the ride i have put above or go to pots and pans/chew reservoir and do some discovery riding around there.

It all depends on what standard of rider you are. E.g. that expert +1 video i put up would form part of a terrible ride if you aint 100% confident as its a challenge to walk, however if you are a good (and i mean good) rider then you would enjoy the challenge

Best thing is buy a map and search things out, or go out with the saddleworth guys. Call the cyclery in Uppermill and have a chat with the guys there, they will prob say come along on there thur night rides which are a right good crack! (7pm from the clarence in Greenfield) hope they dont mind me saying that, they are a good bunch!

SOme of the best peaks riding can be found in Saddleworth if you know where to look, most of it is on Bridlepaths but as its out of the national park folk aint really bothered, afterall its just londeners weekending in the peaks that tend to winge about that kind of thing!

If you want in on a ride with us let me know, ill let you know when were out there next but its regular, most of us are oldham, staly, b,bottom, hollingworth based

If not then i still want to remove my ligin details and it wont let me!

The police wont look into CC fraud if its under £5K (from a copper) and similarly wont investigate a bike theft if it happens while a big footy match is on.

Be careful in gyms too for what its worth, had my CC nicked from my wallet twice in Virgin Gym, Leeds without my knowledge.

Its dead easy if you fancy getting into it, just lock the locker with dirty socks in, keep key, then when its been replaced go and help yourself to the contents, carkeys, dirty boxxers etc.

They didnt seem to care that they had such a lax system in place. I cancelled my membership soon after and never left anything in the locker again

Can you compare it to Laggan Wolftrax Black? Or is it much more gnarlier?

Yeah similar in a “go too slow and your over the bars” kind of way

I like how loads have rode it, apart from the two technical sections, its these bits that there is all the debate over!

We ended up looking at the telegraph track on the way up and then when we got to the start couldnt see anything that looked like a track so carried on down the Rangers to teh end, that was a big mistake indeed, the road ride back wiped me out!

Ace track the rangers indeed. Props to that chap on the DH bike (however i suspect its easier in mid just when they did it – can you ride the rangers legally in June), its a hard old descent, not one for the feint hearted, but definately worth doing

No one has asked what shock you have?

I have a prophet which is the same and i used to run a Manitou Swinger 3 way with SPV which when pumped up helps loads. It takes out the pedal bob which is what you will be noticing loads i suspect. If your shock is soft then it will be more fun on the DH but takes a lot mor effort to get up.

Check your shock pressure is right for your weight, maybes pump it up a bit more till you get used to it and then as you accept and learn to ride differently let a bit out till you find a good balance.

The swampies wont help though, they drad like hell, try high rollers or crossmarks esp if you are a trail centre regular

You beat me, Aldi is by far the best for dough and a euro style pizza( i.e. not overloaded and thin)

Lidl also rank highly for their cheese and tom which you can add your own stuff to.

Asda are terrible, morrisons and like card, tesco are crap and chicago town must have more salt than a salty dog!

On buildings insurance, something good i heard the other week. Cover your house on rebuild value, not purchase/market value, there can be a big difference (if you live somewhere posh especially)
