Imabigkidnow – I quite literally just brought a 55 plate motor

Really? From where did you bring it?

    Binners,

most of the posts in favour of cup and cone state that the maintenance is minimal – perhaps even less than that of cartridge hubs.

If you need to fanny around with them after every ride, the problem is you – not the hub.

I have a 5 year old set of M475 shimano hubs on my wheels. These are the most basic ones shimano made.

5 years of riding in all weathers and they have lasted well. I have changed the bearings twice. 10 minutes per wheel and jobs-a-good-un.

Getting a set of XT wheels on the new bike – not because I dislike cartridge bearings, but because i have had so many years of trouble free biking on Shimano wheels.

BoardinBob – that seems like a very good deal. Much better than my old lease deal.

Yes, it will vary. That’s why I asked for the typical cost. There is no set limit on the website. Think you have to apply to get the definitive cost, rather than the actual.

Would dyslexia not cause you to spell the right word incorrectly, rather than using the wrong word to start with?

    Genuine question, no offence meant.

    Legend – why should they?

It is the responsibility of local authorities to provide housing. The government can and should set out ambitious legislation and local authorities need to work to make it happen.

SNP should be applauded for having the guts to do this.

oldbloke – with you now. Makes more sense – still an epic ride.

I intend having a crack at the new one this May.

Really? Same route as on http://cairngormsloop.net/ ?

    That is some achievement!

I run the wired, cheapo X-kings all year round. I find them exceptionally good, but tyres are a very subjective thing.

What I do find though is that they are really sensitive to tyre pressure. Dropping / increasing by even 1 or 2 % PSI can make a massive difference.

I was on Innerleithen XC today with Team Wonder Spaniel. 95% ice free. The higher elevevations / North facing slopes still have a fair few patches of ice. Some 50yd+ plus long.

    Well worth getting out though.

Wonderful dogs – will run all day as well if you want to take it biking with you.

Best of luck when you get it. If you do nothing else before it arrives, get a copy of “before and after you get your puppy” by Dr Ian Dunbar.

I really like the weights machines- something about the perfect repeatability, it’s the same sort of appeal as rowers I think. Every lift/press is the same.

And thats exactly why they are not as good as free weights. They eliminate the need to use many Stabilizing muslces.

Jeez, how much that cost? Don’t answer that. Anyway, I’m 6″4 do you think he’ll let me borrow it?

Well north of 4.5k I think. Has those fancy Fox Kashima forks, hand built wheels, carbon bars etc etc.

    Really nice bike.

My riding buddy has one with full Chris King / XTR spec. Very nice indeed.

I’ve not had a shot – he is about 6 feet 6 and with me being a measly 5’10 I doubt I could touch the pedals.

He rode it at this years Tour De Ben Nevis. The bike is the only reason he got a much better time than me. Honest. Seriously.

    Holy Chainring Enlightenment Batman!

Here is what I bought: Deore M532

Here is what I should have bought: Deore 510

You can see the difference in the thickness of the metal next to the bolt hole that marries up to the crank arm. You can also see from the comments on the first link that others have made the same mistake and filed it down to make it fit.

Quite like the idea of ordering the right part, but I am short on time before Tour De Ben Nevis next weekend.

Definately a middle – checked the order and part number to make sure I didn’t do something stupid. Looking around the interweb, including the archives here, seems like quite a common problem, usually solved by option 2 above. Couple of mm off each tab should do it.

Will try to get a picture up in the morning.

A step forward – I have figured out whats wrong. I just have no idea how to fix it!

New chain ring is not sitting flush with the crankarm, leading it to sit far to close to the inner ring and causing the chain to catch.

On the old chainring, the bit of metal that surrounds the bolt hole is much thinner than on the new one. The new chainring can therefore not “sit” on the grooves in the crankarm. Should have notice it before, but you live and learn.

option1 – find out why what I thought was a straight replacement, is not in fact a straight replacement.

Option 2 – break out the dremel and make this bad boy fit.

    Opinions?

The chain rings are, according to the instructions, on th right way round. The bulges on the middle ring appear just enough to catch the powerlink. All other links fine. I’m stumped.

You don’t. Massive mistake to make a puppy stop biting. Nature programs puppy’s to bite so they learn the most important skill in all of dogdom – bit inhabition. You need to provide feedback to do around what level of force is inappropriate. This way, the dog learns to control its jaws. This is why good puppy classes let puppy’s wrestle and play fight. It’s the most important training they will ever do.

Teach a puppy to stop biting and you will have a dog that has no control over the force of its jaws and when it bites one day, as all dogs have the potential to, it will be a severe bite. I the dog learns bite inhabition, future bites will likely do no damage at all.

It’s not dominance as many well meanining but inorant people will tell you it is. It’s behaviour honed by evolution.
