Tim you know what you need to do. You only need one Jones! You’d be riding the ATR so much you wouldn’t have time for more than one anyway!

Was 1 x 10 40 front and 11-36 back, just put on a compact up front so will see how it goes. 1 x 10 was working fine but thought it might be nice to try a bit more road speed.

Hey bobster looks like your cycling the same paths I do, will give you shout out ATR style if I see you.

I’m running a community bike cafe called Bean Cycling in Lewes, on Sundays, corner of South Street. Free aeropress coffee for any ATR owners that pop in!

Damn that would have been perfect. Just been invited to a wedding that day I was cheerfully not invited to. Got to plan a way out………..

nedrapier I thought the same thing about my Peregrine and sold it when I got the ATR. Haven’t regretted it for a second!

I love the fact this thread is still going! Going to post another picture for the hell of it cause I just got in from another great ride.

Size-wise at 5’10 the 54 fits really well with a 90mm stem and slight lay back post.

Would be really interested to know if anyone has an ice tech rotor/ TRP spyre combination? Still some weird slight judder going on with the braking that I haven’t been able to sort out.

Just to add an extra option on the tyre front. I’ve found the Landcruisers 40mm a really good choice for mixed road and South Downs type terrain. Bit heavier than most but excellent traction, fast and puncture resistant. Cheap also.
Ridden the ATR round Stanmer on these, though was pushing my luck on a couple of occasions!

Go on then as this has turned into an ATR love-in!
Mine gets very muddy on a regular basis.

Just to throw my two penneth in.

It’s fantastic!! Handles dirt and road equally fantastically, at speed. Rode the SDW the other day Petersfield to Lewes and despite stupidly having my tyres at 60psi it was faultless. Most comfortable bike I’ve ever been on.

I built it 1 x 10 for simplicity but may go 2 x 10 compact soon cause it always seems to want to go faster. Really climbs well also.

My only slight niggle has been the TRPs with an icetech rotor. I’ve had a slight judder when braking at low speeds. No idea what that is, maybe pads?

I’d be very surprised if anyone buying an ATR was less than happy with it.

Was going down there at speed last night and nearly went into the last big hole. The first two at least have some kind of barrier. Keep right to the right going down or left to the left going up!

Weirdly I tore my ACL in 1983 playing rugby. Never been a problem cycling but I would never use clipless pedals because of needing to twist to get in/out. Can’t walk two miles without limping but can cycle 50 without feeling it.
Ice packs are also your friend.

I have 2 CX bikes both 1 x 10 with 40 Surly chainring and 11-36 cassette, 105 STI and MTB rear mechs. Using N Gear Stops just cause I had a couple but I haven’t dropped a chain yet. SDW the other day, I dropped but the chain didn’t………

Thanks for posting this. Mine’s somewhere in the garage after I threw it there 6 months ago, thinking I was just too thick to work it out. Turns out I was!

Got a Peregrine too and have ‘worked through’ the toe overlap as well!

Tried both MTN and Road BB7s. Still use the MTNs but gave up on the Road versions in favour of TRP Spyres. Probably my cack-handedness but they seemed to require constant fettling whereas the MTN ones just work. Much like the Spyres!

Good advice from Tim, much better than the instructions and compressionless cables a must.

Wouldn’t bother changing if it was me, I use the Landcruisers on mixed terrain and for me they’re the best all-rounder I’ve tried yet. They’re pretty fast, don’t get punctures (yet!) and cope with the crater holes on local roads.

I’ve asked someone to shoot me if I think about ordering from them again.

After getting something that did not do what is described on their website and screwed up my brake lever, I paid to return it and receive a replacement. So the Selcof cables ordered ended up being more expensive than the Jagwires I thought I’d save on! Didn’t get a reply to my further email about the problem either. Is there a reason they don’t do a Collect Plus service?

Stupidly ordered something again which has taken a week to arrive despite what is said about dispatch times and bits are missing, no instructions and packaging open.

Can’t be bothered with them anymore, will just take my custom elsewhere and have a little hissy on here.

Irony is I’ll keep wearing their merino cardy until it’s in tatters, so they still get free advertising from me.

TRP Spyres. Finally got them set up really nice thanks to some advice from a mate and now the grinding!

Cyclistm – ngear jump stop, works really well for me with a Surly ring.

Re; tyres – I’ve found the 40c Landcruisers absolutely fantastic for round here, good on road and track and (touch head) not had a puncture yet. Felt slightly heavy and leaden at first but I’m sure they get better the more you use them……………

On the South Downs too, still very muddy in woody places but Tripster didn’t seem to mind! Get a horrible juddering, grinding noise on braking sometimes, anyone else had this?

Almost bought some Straggler forks for my Cross Check to replace exisitng cantis (Shorty 6s) but decided to order some TRP CX9 going cheap at On One. Waiting for them to arrive. Possibly a mistake but haven’t found performance on road discs enough to warrant the extra cost (double) yet. If I was starting from scratch would definately get a Straggler though!

Really like to the mountain versions, just fit and forget, but found over 3 years the road versions a constant fiddling, fettling, faff.

Just swapped the road BB7s for TRPs, and despite some initial set-up issues they seem really good. Also hoping they won’t be such a problem when fully loaded for touring, the wide profile of the BB7s were a bit of a problem with racks and panniers.

Don’t mind being overtaken but I’d like car drivers to learn how to overtake properly, i.e. indicating and giving plenty of room etc. When you’re trying to avoid drain covers and pot holes in the wind and rain and some idiot gets that close to you it’s a bit hairy.

Is overtaking cyclists a part of the driving test? They seem to be able to do it in France…..

Think these proposals are good as far as they go, they’re for specific locations, it’s the other roads that need action.

Although it worked well I found the weight distribution all wrong with the Alfine, especially when lifting the bike over fences etc. Think cleaning, maintenance is much easier with a 1x set-up and no horrible front mech.

Mine screwed up within a couple of months having never worked properly. Whilst trying to sort it I lost the valve ball (think it was that) and then looked for ages for parts but couldn’t work out what from internet descriptions whether they were the parts I needed. Probably needed everything but the main body. Still mean to sort it out but the cheaper replacement Pedros I got has worked flawlessly for the last 2 years.

1×1 – 32 with 18 at the back and 1×10 – 42 with 11-36 at the back, seems ok for South Downs

Really sympathise, hope you get it sorted.
I’ve been paranoid about doing that and probably have too many spacers!

I’d just put some 35 or 40mm Landcruiser tyres on the Kaffenback. Although they are a bit heavy I think they roll really well on and off road. Plus they’re cheap and have good puncture protection.

My experience so far is that the ATR will excel at all the things you mention. It climbs really well and is loads of fun on ‘bridleway/cheeky coastal path’ stuff, particularly when you’re bedding in brakes…

Compared it on the commute to the Cross Check usually used and it’s great in traffic, with the right saddle and tyres 20 miles would be a breeze.

Seems quite upright in my usual riding position but I quite like that, reminds me of my old Sequoia.

@Northwind thanks, I’ll email On One and see what they say. What is annoying is that the inner doesn’t work with an STI, at least not an older style Ultegra one! p8ddy obviously chose the right ones but there’s nothing to distinguish between the two types (except in material construction) on their website.

Don’t buy the xtrastrong like I did. Although says it’s compatible for road and mountain, the outers are not long enough for front and back of a mdium cross frame and the inner noodle on the end of the cable went straight through the sti shifter guide. Had cut the outer for the front so can’t return. Thank you.

Not sure whether to take a chance on the superstrong as you had a good experience with that.

Had a Peregrine for a while so it’s been good comparing the same South Downs trails with the ATR. They’ve both got different strengths, the Peregrine is really adaptable and surprisingly fast for quite a heavy bike whilst the ATR is effortless to ride and nicely executed…..right I’m out again………

Couldn’t find the other thread where someone asked if I’d post pics when I built it so will dump it here…….

Lovely ride this morning, as others have said this bike is such a blast to ride both on and off road. It climbs like a goat and and always seems like it could do more if only I were only a better rider. Not sure yet if it’s a good thing having a bike that makes you feel inadequate?

Just swapped out some BB7s for Spyres cause after 2 years I was getting sick of the constant fettling they seemed to need, was blown away by how easy the Spyres were to set up. A couple of longish rides and I’m slightly underwhelmed by the braking power and lever throw seems a lot. Probably need to bed in, cable stretch a bit more etc. Anyone have any good set-up tips?

So glad you asked this, have been thinking of posting the same over the last few days. I also genuinely want to know what the attraction is? I’ve got a Swift and was thinking of getting a 29+ fork for more mud clearance but given that I very rarely have any issues with 2.35 tyres in South Downs clag anyway I can’t see that it’s worth the extra expense. I can’t get beyond costs of and limited choice of 29+ rims, tyres and limited mud clearance issues. Sorry I’ve pretty much repeated everything you said!!

Really like mine and as a singlespeed it has made riding in really mucky conditions a lot less faff than gears. Was thinking of going 1 x 9 for the summer as any longish stretches of flat road can be a bit wearing so really interested in the comments on geared and ss Swifts.
