Find it smoother, faster, less jerky (there was not much before but smoother now), better notifications quick settings etc. More polished all round really.

Fear not. I was in the beta program for Nougat on the S7 and from the first build I got to the final release it’s been flawless as an OS, do think the battery life may have taken a bit of a hit. But overall quite a bit better than Marshmallow imo.

:sigh: the omnipotence of STW has been sorely challenged

As far as I understand it you can calculate the heat requirement of a room by working out the heat loss using the u-value or thermal transmittance of the materials in the wall floor etc

So if you know the size of the barrier and the amount of heat it loses per sq metre you can work out the total heat loss.

So I have 24m2 of windows, the u-value of these is 1.7, so 24*1.7= 40.8

27m2 of walls, u-value of these is 0.3 (probably less but not more) 27*0.3=8.1

34m2 of roof u value is 0.25 (again probably less) 34*0.25=8.5

    60m2 of floor u value 0.25 = 15

Add them all up I get 72.4, bung on 25% for ventilation = 90.5

Then I need to multiply this by the probable temperature gradient so if it’s -5° outside and I want it to be 21° inside that’s a difference of 26.

    So 90.5 * 26 = 2353W (is that watts or what, it’s something)

Apologies, I’m not a maths head, typical B at o-level type bod which is why I need someone to critique these calcs.

Looking to get trench radiators (f’n expensive) and plinth heaters

Why is your ceiling so much smaller than your floor?

It’s an L shaped extension going out at the back and side, and encompassing our galley kitchen and dining room, so the “missing” roof is internal, not sure it’s worth adding that to calculation?

Galaxy S8 is out in April. My Galaxy S7 Edge is virtually perfect in almost every respect, great camera, waterproof, buttery smooth, great battery life even the previously execrable Saumsung UI (Touch Wiz) is now much improved. I can’t really imagine phones getting much better but then they always do – a bit. I’m on the Samsung upgrade program and not sure whether to get the S8.

I keep hearing that Virgins TiVo box is rubbish.

Mine is proper rubbish, but my old dears is actually ok, no multi second pauses between pushing a button and something actually happening, it’s not buttery smooth but it’s not shit either. Tivo itself is pretty good.

There’s also a new one too which I guess you would get as a new punter. However having had Virgin for the last few months I’ll be binning it off when our year is up, I barely watch anything on the non freeview channels anyway, well except for Impractical Jokers on Comedy Central. Freeview and Netflix and to a lesser extent Amazon Prime is all I need.

Just thought I’d update this thread, had the piles “done” to structural engineers design in late November, 9 piles (managed to lose 1 due to a design change) to a total of 87 linear metres. Deepest pile was 15m! No we’re not building a car park. Came to about £6.5K.

The ground was a smorgasbord of clay, chalk and sand.

A further cost was the ground beam, the pilers, who I think didn’t really want the job quoted something like £10k. Managed to do it ourselves for £7k-£8k.

We’re getting a new heating system and one option is all WB, boiler (I think Greenstar 30CDi), unvented tank and Wave. The accredited installer seems very insistent on the Wave when I questioned him about it in comparison to Nest et al To be fair he probably wears Worcester Bosch pyjamas such is his loyalty, maybe big discounts on price for him?

I too fear the lack of development of an inhouse system vs a universal system.

Found this thread on a plumbers forum, from 2015

Yup and there is a mutual benefit to free trade, good for them and good for us. Their arguments for restricting it are politcal not economic. There will be a cost to them of no free trade, they maybe prepared to oay that cost in order to try and protect “the project”

I for one am shocked that this may happen. Who would have thought it, who could have predicted it?

    Have a rescue lurcher.

All the Cockerpoos (mainly) I meet out and about seem like great littleish dogs. Would definitely have one.

Don’t really understand the cross breed hate, it’s a bit weird, no? All dogs are 100% dog.

And Cavapoo may be a bit of a strange compound name but it’s roots are Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle which are both odd in their own way too.

    Re: Gramofon vs Chromecast[/url]

Seems the major downside of Chromecast is the lack of PC control. Can’t say I’m bothered by that. Feel sorry for Gramofon though nice product was looking at one myself a couple of years back and then bam Chromecast audio.

Noty read the whole thread but if its ” kitcen diner to be” then can you not hardwire if you are redoing the kitchen?

Thought about hard wiring but it’s yet another complication in an already fairly complicated build. Also what’s the point now you can have wireless, it’s just much more flexible. Did think about ceiling speakers, but I was amazed at how expensive they were plus we’re combing a new build extension onto the old galley kitchen and dining room so the ceiling void on the existing rooms is insufficient.

Golden age of TV was Blackadder and the like. Only need an SD telly for that

It wasn’t it was a rare diamond is a sea of dross and tedium.

Check out the BBC 1 listing for the debut of Blackadder II, they didn;t even have shows from lunchtime TV kids progs to afternoon kids progs and Question of Sport and Tomorrrows World was prime time TV

    Ulysses 31 though

Edit: Although Yes Prime Minister was on BBC2

What’s the point of having the perfect picture/image when a huge amount of the content is shite anyway?

We’re living in the golden age of TV.

Bimbler, the tipping point for me was when I found out that you can start a Sonos system playing and then leave the room/building/country – it will carry on playing as it makes the connections to the services/devices itself.
This means that the load is taken off your phone (for instance) and you can pop out without the music stopping.

Not sure that’s correct, definitely incorrect for my main amp which has built in Spotify Connect, the phone is just the remote control, the streaming is direct, not via phone, same as all streaming devices innit?

@Bimbler what is the source of your music? You’ve not said whether this is for CDs, radio, MP3 stored on the device, MP3s stored elsewhere on your network or just streaming from a service like Spotify, Amazon or Apple Music, which can be done via the device directly or from a mobile device you already own…

Main source will be Spotify (unless I switch to another streaming service) iPlayer radio, and a NAS loaded with lossless flac files. Oh and some sort of Android based podcast player/service

Thanks all btw. Still uncertain, will prolly demo Sonos in the new year but I am leaning towards Chromecast. I don’t really care about having multiroom really, as long as I can listen to what I want where I want.

If you’re only going to be watching TV with the occasional movie then get a soundbar or if your TV is in the same room as the hifi maybe combine with the HiFi to have a stereo setup and possibly add a sub to go 2.1. You could prolly do this with a Sonos setup too.

If you’re going to watch a lot of movies or anything with 5.1(+) output/content (and having a 32″ telly suggests not) then go for an av setup.

    noisy!
if you’re someone who doesn’t like niggleing background noises (like me!)
    then steer clear

Just stick it in the garden, no?

Apparently much better with underfloor heating than traditional rads, which need to be “supersized” to cope with the lower input temperature, hmmm.

Ooh I’ve just done a load of this, used some good quality trade emulsion watered down 50%. It works. Most of the advice I’ve read is saying don’t use PVA, if it’s a plastered bathroom and is going to be tiled then you should use some sealant, we used some SBR which seems to be the main ingredient in the proprietary plaster sealants.

It’s not really £200 though is it, you would have to buy some sort of thermostat/timer, so call it £100.

AFAIK – I’m going to get one when the damn extension is finished, they device checks the weather, so if it’s -10 the heating will come on earlier to compensate, as well as all the remote gubbins.
