Buuuttttt you aren’t allowed to use blockers
Not ad blockers, but I’ve never seen or heard anything about script blocking.
Blocking Ajax, for example, more than likely hobbles your web experience. It’s used across the web for a multitude of things like autocomplete, filtering lists dependant upon other choices, etc. You know, all those things that enhance the UI and generally make your web experience richer, faster, and more fluid.
Yeah I’ve been using script blocking since I heard about it (noughties?) and it does interfere with web experience (although this is much better than it used to be). With NoScript you can block scripts on and off by default as well as allowing on a per session basis. Wouldn’t be without it now. Firefox is my main “secure” browser while I use Chrome or Pale Moon for sites which are too broken with blocking. The difference in performance on my laptop between STW without scripts and with is quite something.
BimblerFree MemberSo most drillers of earth (drillers of Earth?) are male. What do we learn from this? Males are more inclined to be drillers of Earth because of the physical makeup of their brain? Or because we have spent many centuries keeping it from the ladeez of the species that there is a job called “drillers of Earth”? Or is it just that the toilets at places where earth is drilled are stinky, which puts the women off? I think we need more affirmative action in the world of drillers of Earth.
That dirty, physically hard and dangerous jobs are done by men. Cos, y’know evolution.
BimblerFree MemberMay be a lot of black mould behind the wardrobe. There was behind a bookcase we had on an outside wall in our then single skin 1930’s semi.
BimblerFree MemberDefinitely take a look at some Jap imports, especially if you’re not planning on doing mega miles, 4 cylinder 2.4 petrol or 3.0 V6 petrol in the Toyota Alphard, Nissan Elgrand et al. Japanese luxury MPV’s come fully loaded with all the toys that were available 10 years ago (a friends Jap Toyota has a better reversing camera in 2003 than most cars which feature this today). Some of the toyota’s have the basically a Lexus engine and gearbox (well that’s what mate told me, I dunno) some of the Alphards are hybrids too. Silly comfortable and absolutely massive if you take the seats out. Can be had for £5k upwards
BimblerFree MemberWhy are we so bothered about it?
A load of people I’ve never met have been murdered by someone else I never met. Happens every day in crapholes all over the world but because it’s the usa people actually “care” about it.
Shrugs shoulders, moves on.
BimblerFree MemberThe problem with any of the pro arguments, is it ignores the fact that drugs like heroin are still going to be pretty bad, even if they’re legal. Then you add duty and VAT onto the cost of a wrap, enough to fund the health and social costs of it’s use, which is probably a council house and a team of emergency services when they overdose every few weeks/months. Making it legal won’t stop people spending every penny they have on it and becoming homeless will it?
With all due respect this is patent nonsense. All heroin users want is to get high, if you give them a nice clean supply they can live a fairly normal life. Nearly all of the societal problems from opiate addiction stem from prohibition. Crime is linked to the cost, cost is linked to prohibition. Overdoses are caused in the most part by getting a dirty/uncertain supply. Provide “free” clean heroin to addicts and both of these problems dissipate.
BimblerFree MemberOf course this all ignores the supply chains, Cocaine and Smack don’t just magically pop into existence on our shores, various criminal and terrorist groups already grow and process them in sunnier climbs. So while we might be living in a lovely new, drug fuelled, crime free utopia, bits of South America and the Middle East would probably see an increase in criminality and violence to keep the UK supplied with lovely, lovely drugs, there would be a significant impact beyond our borders….
Or if other nations were to follow the same path, helping peasant farmers in the developing world.
BimblerFree MemberIn 1971, as the Vietnam War was heading into its sixteenth year, congressmen Robert Steele from Connecticut and Morgan Murphy from Illinois made a discovery that stunned the American public. While visiting the troops, they had learned that over 15 percent of U.S. soldiers stationed there were heroin addicts. Follow up research revealed that 35 percent of service members in Vietnam had tried heroin and as many as 20 percent were addicted—the problem was even worse than they had initially thought.1
The discovery led to a flurry of activity in Washington, including the creation of the Special Action Office of Drug Abuse Prevention under President Nixon, to promote prevention and rehabilitation and to track addicted service members when they returned home.2
Lee Robins was one of the researchers in charge. In a finding that completely upended the accepted beliefs about addiction, Robins found that when soldiers who had been heroin users returned home, only 5 percent of them became re-addicted within a year, and just 12 percent relapsed within three years. In other words, approximately nine out of ten soldiers who used heroin in Vietnam eliminated their addiction nearly overnight.3
From here
BimblerFree MemberOf course. It’s really no business of the government to decide what I put in my own body. Liberty and all that,
BimblerFree MemberOooh I can help with this, my remington (one of these?) died a month or so ago (battery). Bought a Philips Series 5000 to replace it. Great bit of kit, huge improvement on the remington, doesn’t have the pop up trimmer which I miss a bit but the Philips feels much more 21st Century compared to the 1980’s vibe of the Remington.
BimblerFree MemberDid you know that Friends still generates about $1 billion/year and that each main cast member earns 2% of that, $20m a year for a show that finished 15 years ago!
BimblerFree MemberApologies for the mini thread diversion, but while on the subject can any of you audiophiles recommend a bluetooth receiver to connect to an AV amp. Doesn’t need a DAC, just an optical/digital out so I can push spotify from my phone. My amp is pretty old and doesn’t have it as an option. argh!
You don’t want to use Bluetooth for this, get a Chromecast Audio or a Gramofon or something like that. Then your phone is just the remote control and the CCA/Gramofon does all the grunt work
BimblerFree MemberMinirigs are great, one of those little things that give me a little frisson of joy when I use it, seems expensive but they’re made in uk sound great and the battery life is insane. If you want something bigger then the Marshalls’ recommended above are great as are Audio Pro AddOn T3
BimblerFree MemberOh and Dolby Vision – slightly better HDR. Powered by A10x chip, this isn’t going to slow down in a long time. Probably the best device really but you sure pay for it.
Given your mostly just streaming content through it what are you going to use the power for?
Buttery smooth UI with no clunkadelic slow down. + Running games – which I’ll probably never do
Chromecast if you have a phone or tablet you have a remote I think my tv one does pause etc.
Which is great until your phone’s memory management kills the service and you end up having to crash the stream and start again, which happened with all my android devices and the prime reason I binned the CCast for the Firestick.
BimblerFree MemberOoh I’ve been checking out FireStick alternatives as my gen 1 FireStick is glitching and crashing too.
Thought process –
Bin off Chromecast due to lack of remote
New Firesticks certainly a bargain at £50 for 4k + HDR but I don’t want Alexa so that’s binned too.
Leaving Roku and Apple TV.
Roku seems to have everything – all the UK catchup services, Netflix, Now, Amazon, Google Play price £80
Apple has most stuff, but not Google Play but does have all the usual Apple integration and ITunes. Price £180 (Argos are selling the 64gb device for the same price as the 32gb). Oh and Dolby Vision – slightly better HDR. Powered by A10x chip, this isn’t going to slow down in a long time. Probably the best device really but you sure pay for it.
So unless you’re really into Apple and iTunes then Roku wins?
BimblerFree MemberHow do you embed vidya nowadays?
Because with your £400 watch you can do this to your £80k? car

BimblerFree Memberand their care factor is about zero, the pixel is about showcasing what you can do, same as the nexus range was.
Well dunno about zero, I’m sure Google would love to sell hundred of millions of phones too.
Not sure about the Nexus point either, Nexus was a technology showcase, top spec SoC’s and low/mid range everything else, pure Android, an enthusiasts phone. Pixel was designed to be an actual generation of consumer devices but I really don’t know where they’re going with it, and neither I think do Google so maybe you’re correct in a roundabout fashion.
BimblerFree MemberNever seems to generate the same buzz as an Apple event, but I guess that’s what Apple are good at.
I’d be surprised if the Google even sells 1% of iPhone sales so not really that surprising.
BimblerFree MemberBeen using the BT WholeHome thingy for about a year and a half, since a house refurb featuring steels and lots of foil backed products, insulation, laminate underlay etc, rendered my previously excellent wifi rather less than excellent. Works well, especially after changing Virgin Router/Modem from superhub v2 to v3 and several firmware updates from BT. Would have preferred the Linksys or Netgear solution but I was flat broke

Needed a phone quick, fancied trying iOS so scored a 32gb 6S for £285. This is £50 to £100 more than you can get them on ebay but you get a two year warranty so worth it (?), is for me, but then again I’ve never tried the warranty, according to the dudes they just swap the phone if a hardware problem, obvs. not for screen break.
BimblerFree MemberI like ours. Installed just over a year ago – all good so fare. Advice? Yeah, go for the Gold (?) delivery unless you/your friend/family are really strong or you’re just ordering standard/small units.
BimblerFree MemberPlenty of people have Android phones, iPads and Windows computers. You don’t really gain any of the Apple wall garden goodness but you don’t really lose anything compared to an Android tablet imo. Looking at he available competition for the iPad they’re either out of date/a bit crappy or more expensive than the iPad 2018.
My old dear has one of those (2016) Samsung A10 linked above, it’s ok, heavy and a bit laggy but generally ok – probably won’t be receiving any OS updates anymore though
BimblerFree MemberOld? My Italian aunt lives in a house built in the 13th century
BimblerFree MemberI love my RHA 750 wireless, £150, so a bit spendy but they have other models priced at £100 and £60. Great for cycling although not really sure about running
BimblerFree MemberNew iPad due in a month or two, I’d wait for that whatever you do and then either get the new one for the same or the current one for less
Yeah, new iPad Pros, these are going to cost way more than £300. The iPad 2018 which I believe the op was talking about is unsurprisingly the latest “cheap” model. For £320 the iPad is a steal imo and much better than anything in the Android space, save perhaps the Tab S4 which on price terms is more a competitor to the iPad Pro.
BimblerFree MemberCan’t get enough of Anaal Nathkrath – Powerslave (Iron Maiden cover), like listening to this then the o.g song and then this again. Wow. Needs to be loud (natch), the solo never fails to make the old hairs stand on end
BimblerFree MemberIf you’re bothered about security then ProtonMail? Don’t forget that “Google” reads all of your emails. Other than that Google, Outlook etc are all much of a muchness
BimblerFree MemberBought my first ever, and as yet only i-Device (6S – wanted to see whether I like or at least didn’t hate iOS) when my S7Edge died. Works loads better on my (Google) Chromecast Audio than any of the numerous Android devices which use it.
what exactly can apple ecosystem offer thats not available on my android/ windows setups
Much less spying? Updates? Stores with Geniuses :-)
BimblerFree MemberAirDrop uses Bluetooth to create a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi network between devices.
Hangouts while still functioning (quite well) has been sort of dropped in favour of Allo and the other one which probably no one actually uses.
BimblerFree Member8 will fit in my poncy man wallet, X won’t
Must be a very tight fit as they are quite similar in size
BimblerFree MemberWhy would you pay £1000 for a phone that can achieve the same end as one you can pay £160 for?
Some people like to buy nice things :shrugs:
Same as Bikes, Cars, Watches etc etc etc
BimblerFree MemberDisappointed in the Xr – a new phone with a 720p screen
Seems a strange decision
BimblerFree MemberNo direct experience of Beagles but many of the ones I encounter while walking my own dog seem to be permanently lead walked due to their predilection for running after things and not coming back or at least not coming back very quickly.
BimblerFree MemberShows that I’ve enjoyed the most this year on Netflix –
Happy
Dirk Gently
Altered Carbon
Jessica Jones 2
