Now that MS own Nokia wonder why they don’t try and do a “nexus” and release a high end phone for cost(ish) – would definitely tempt some.

MS have to decide what business they’re in – are they a hardware company like Apple or a web company like Google or a software behemouth with a line in hardware – which in the consumer field doesn’t really seem to be working at the mo.

nasty – feel sorry for you

I doubt any bike frame materials would be OK after a fire like that, certainly not heat-treated aluminium, so its not a problem with carbon fibre (or Cannondale for that matter) – will you get insurance for a fire?

Not me. Reddit thread here

So much jealousy.

Favorite Grand designs

1/ Earthship – in France

2/ Artists in puglia

3/ Wooden house on in forest, mentioned above

I guess the common theme is they were more self built.

House above looks quite interesting.

Nexus 4’s going from £160-£200 on ebay, Expansys have a product page up for Nexus 4 but it says Ordered on Request. Bound to be a flood of N4’s on ebay when the N5 comes out, possibly including mine.

Bin off contract and either wait for Nexus 5 in a few weeks or go Nexus 4 now, SIM only contract.

Been pretty happy with our Renault Grand Scenic Mk 3. Slow off the mark, only 105 how in a 1.5 ton car, but will (and has) cruised at 80+ mph all day, hasn’t missed a beat. I believe newer models have 130 ish hp, perfect family load lugger, will lose value quickly presumably, but we plan to drive ours into the ground. Low 40s in town, low 50s on the motorway. Based on Renault Megane so should (fingers crossed) be cheapish to fix. Comfortable.

Windows is barred

What does this mean, you can’t get onto the router via windows or you use a different OS other than Windows?

You can check if your Firmware is up to date by logging (preferably on wired connection) on to the Zyxel NBG-416N using the router IP number (should be on a sticker on the bottom of router or on router box somewhere), default username/password is admin/1234

Have a look around through all the options until you find firmware page, maybe on “System” or something like that, there’ll be a check firmware button/link somwhere – press it and see what happens.

I’d borrow a wireless router from somebody and see if the same thing happens, if it does then the problem isn’t the router.

Looking for one too,

this seems to be good advice

Obviously he’s only promoting the machines he sells.

Mitsubishi seem to have the best overall reputation but only do refrigerant based units and cost north of £300

Got one, rate it. Used maybe 8 Mach3 blades in last 2 years. I know it’s the same as the “jeans method” (which when I found out about it led me to the Razor Pit) ie stropping but the chances of me doing the jeans method was zero, so RP was £20 well spent. Just for comparisons sake a Mach3 blade used to last me maybe 2 or 3 weeks, say 7 or 8 shaves. So at the most conservative estimate I’ve quartered my blade expenditure.

The latest Android phones support it too; IIRC, the HTC One and the Samsung S4 both have it.

Whether it’s worth it depends what you’re doing. It’s unlikely to make your Internet connection any faster unless you’re on something super-whizzy, as the bottleneck is usually the DSL rather than the WiFi. If you tend to copy a lot of files about on your home network though, it might well be worth the punt. (I tend to switch to wired if I’m copying anything large.)

Cheers. I’ve got a 30Mb Virgin connection and my current Asus gets me 30Mb to virtually anywhere in the house, like you I copy large things over a wire rather than Wifi.

Thanks somouk.

What’s broken on the old router?

I’ve resurrected quite a few old routers with the DD-WRT firmware

Not sure, but I’ve been in touch with Asus tech guys and they think it’s hardware related. Basically can’t connect to 5Ghz band, looking at the wifi analysis I get very strong signal for a few seconds and then nothing then maybe 30 seconds later the signal comes back again, at no time will it accept any connections, pretty sure Amazon will give me money back for a replacement.

A lot of those options are missing from my menu, in particular the ambient sensor and backlight control settings.
You definitely cannot turn it off on my model :/

Are you sure it’s the e6b model you’ve got, as there is no 37″ version?

The operating instructions make no distinction between the models, although from memory I can’t remember seeing a 1080p pixel direct setting.

Nope, you can turn it off, just checked the settings I used here

Got the 42″ version too, very pleased with it generally. Picture is fantastic after I followed the settings guide online somewhere (maybe avforums), gives a great natural CRT-esque picture, occasionally miss the lack of higher refresh rate. As it’s not an IPS (?) panel viewing angles aren’t as wide as plasma or IPS but works fine in our sitting room with one sofa directly in front and one offset about 30°. Sound is acceptable.

Aps are pretty poor tbh, not a patch on Samsung/LG, by reputation anyway. However iplayer, youtube and Netflix are great and the latter two work seemlessly with android aps, shame there’s no 4oD etc (yet?). Networking is a breeze. Interface is a bit slow too, not annoyingly so, and I am picky, but I can see why people are pushing dual core processors. Interface itself is clear and easy to navigate although probably room for improvement.

A solid 8/10.

I had a desire for 18 months prior to the nexus4 which I put cyanogen mod on, tbh I can’t see any benefit doing to the nexus4 as the stock os is so great. Thoughts?

Yes I’ve rooted it but still run stock Android, only really did it for a few aps which require root now most of them run root free, and to do something we’re not allowed to discuss on here. Personally I wouldn’t bother unless you’ve got a hankering to run CM or any of the other ROMs

1/8″ look nicerer but Surly, for one, certainly prefer 3/32″

1/2×1/8″ chains vs. 1/2×3/32″ chains. 1/2×1/8″ chains suck. Run whatever you want, but bigger isn’t better here. Yeah, they’re wider, but according to manufacturer-supplied data, they’re not stronger and they are definitely not of better quality. Multi-speed drivetrains is where the bucks are at, and chains that work on such drivetrains are where the manufacturers of chains showcase their innovations and developments in quality. The rollers are better, the plates are better, the pins are stronger, and the construction method (riveting procedure) is better on all multi-speed 3/32″ chains. I guess if you grind your chainring and chain down the handrail every night at the local pub, a bigger 1/2×1/8 ” chain will last longer, but most of us don’t and it won’t. If you have an old Singleator: Dammit, don’t use a 1/2×1/8″ chain!!! Otherwise, you’ll tear the Singleator off the bike, among other things, guaranteed. This is no longer the case with our redesigned Singleator. The old version used a loop over the jockey wheel to help keep the chain in place. This loop would catch 1/8″ chains, which are fatter than 3/32″. The current Singleator uses guide plates on each side of the jockey wheel to achieve the same purpose, but depending on the orientation of the wheels, it can run 3/32″ or 1/8″ chains. We still prefer narrow chains, but if you absolutely must use an 1/8″, the new design will work for you.

Personally went for 1/8″ setup

Certainly seems to have found his rabbiting mojo, got another one today, he seemed keener to keep this one though.

What puzzles me though is that he has always seemed more collie like than whippet like – he has the collies love of tennis balls – would jump off a cliff chasing one, and even his rabbit chasing almost seemed more like herding – especially when he was younger.

It’s what sight hounds do; great to see them enjoying what they’re ‘made for’, but big risk to your dog – we’ve had greyhounds that have chased rabbits into barbed wire fences at 40mph, and one that broke his back catching a rabbit hole at full pelt and rag dolling half way across a field (he needed a lot of rehab). Also know of an uninsured lurcher with a £6k broken leg from chasing stuff. Also the risk of impaling on sticks/branches in woodland. They really do get the red mist!

Thanks for the advice, met this bloke who bought a “designer” lurcher for “sporting” reasons and post puppy period he always had it on the lead, when I asked him why he said it’s chase instinct was off the scale, blowing leaves would set him off. Saw him a few weeks ago and he didn’t have the lurcher with him, stoopit dawg, turns out he impaled himself on a branch. 🙁 Beautiful looking animal too.

I’ve used it twice and been disappointed to be honest: The fire is enclosed inside the drum, meaning that unless you have flames leaping through the hole, there’s very little heat radiated out. It was actually quite cold to sit around in comparison to a more open version. Of course, the advantage is that the ash is very contained and you don’t have a mess to clear up where logs have fallen out etc the following morning

Agree with this, went to a campsite that had these and as you say very little heat combined with a voracious fuel appetite caused presumably by all the little ‘oles (it was windy mind)

After getting tired of the limitations of the admittedly brilliant X Mini speakers, I decided to get bluetooth speaker for around the house. There are loads out there – Jawbone Jambox is the best known (going cheap on Expansys recently) – across a range of budgets, do you want portable/ruggedised long battery life etc.

In the end I got a fairly mid/high end portable Braven 650 for my birthday absolutely fantastic. Although pretty sure I’d have been just as happy with Jabra Solemate or Cambridge Audio Minx Go or any of the Logitech UE range which were also on my list of possibles.

Yup had it for a few years and used twice (old Ford Focus decided to immobilise itself from time to time), problem free, help was quick to arrive. All good really.
