Cheers bimbler, bad news then.

Others found the same? They were touting it as being quicker and better I thought

Don’t take my word for it though, I’m no photographer and I was “shooting” in a bowling alley, but found the lag between “pushing the button” the phone focusing and then capturing the image laughably bad/slow. Disappointingly slow. Perhaps I could have fiddled with some setting to get it to work better. No doubt something can be done to fix this. Although seems my experience is far from unique.

Other than this and the “slightly” disappointing battery life (personally wasn’t expecting a massive improvement from N4) it’s a great phone. But if photography is important to you I wouldn’t buy an N5 until the camera is fixed. Shame I can’t really afford a Note 3.

I’m charging my one x two or three times a day, so once a day would be an improvement. Still it would be nice if one phone company would release a phone which lasts longer than a day.

In that case LG G2 (brother of Nexus 5 with a much bigger battery) or Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Battery life is a bit meh as well, it’s great if you don’t use it, overnight with wifi and location reporting off it only uses 3% battery from fully charged. If you’re going to use it prepare to charge it once a day pretty much like every other smart phone I’ve ever had

Hello Nexus 5 owners, can you tell me if you consider the camera to be a considerable improvement on the Nexus 4?

Quality of pics is OK on my N4 but I find camera software is quite frustrating

Tried to take my first proper shots this weekend, Camera is abysmal, I think worse (slower) than the Nexus 4 on autofocus, it was indoors but even so it was slooooow.

    Lovely place, great people

A friend of mine lives there and would strongly disagree with the latter.

I’ve got a whippet/collie cross. Never really considered getting a whippet. Not sure I can comment much on general traits as not sure how much of Barney is whippet, how much is collie and how much is Barney. However if I was ever going to get another dog a whippet/lurcher would be top of my list.

Ours is six months old and still behaves like a Tasmanian devil a lot of the time, steals anything he can get in his mouth, won’t come back when called, desperate to play with any other dogs/people we see when out.

Ours is 2 and all of the above still applies, although he’s not that bothered about playing (ie scrapping) with other dogs much anymore. Loves to be chased though, will deliberately annoy other dogs in order to encourage them to chase him, he will then run them into the ground, much to some owners delight. Barney even has “play dates” for precisely that purpose. Love to see him run.

You’ll get used to a bigger screen but it may make your Nexus 7 redundant. Apple have really dropped the ball on screen size imo

In terms of bang for buck the Moto G, buy it outright and free yourself of contract Either that or a Nexus 5.

According to the Wired review, it’s basically the Nexus 4: “The Moto G is basically the no-longer-on-sale Nexus 4, which was an excellent phone with a price tag price that made people’s jaws drop at the time it was released. Obviously, the Moto G is made by Motorola and the Nexus 4 was made by LG (as is the Nexus 5), so the two phones vary slightly in design, but the fact that they are powered by similar components and run stock Android (or near enough) makes them pretty much equivalent to one another.”

But only 1 Gb of ram, which maybe a mistake. Although have this earmarked for my daughters next phone once you can purchase it Sim free

Anyone found a decent case for the N5 yet, selection so far seems fairly disappointing, bought a no-brand one from ebay which will do for now.

I’ve just taken a look at blackcircles.com & the winter tyres on there (for my car) have worse wet weather performance ratings than many of the regular tyres – I thought that the extra sipes & all that were meant to provide better wet grip from the winter ones? Or is it that the standard tests aren’t done in conditions where the winter tyres can perform better?

    Snap. I’m confused too.

What do ze Chermans say about this, they’re normally pretty good at testing this kind of stuff?

Don’t buy a diamond ring. The diamond industry/market is just the biggest scam, like ever. If she wants something sparkly, buy fake.

Has anyone found anything useful in Google Now, I understand that in America there’s lots of useful stuff and there’s also some changes happening soon

But the stuff Google says is coming November 13 is the real gravy, and it’s a shame it isn’t already ladled on. One one those things is the ability to ask you questions — so you might say “text Jennifer” and it will reply “which Jennifer,” and then ask you to dictate the message. It’s also going to get the ability to search inside applications, and launch them to complete tasks for you. So, you might search for a restaurant, and an option in the results shows up for OpenTable, which you’ll be able to fire up and make a reservation. It’s also going to use location cues to drop cards into Google Now, even more so than it does currently. At Yellowstone it will show you geyser times, for example. Sadly, none of this stuff was lit up yet, so I wasn’t able to test it. I’m not dinging the phone for that (and it’s not getting any extra credit), but given how interesting these features are, it’s kind of crazy the phone launched without them.

    From Wired review

But just seems to rinse my battery for no real benefit

So you got a quote from someone who was using your site to learn new skills with 2 years ago and now feel it should be applicable to an experienced ASP.Net developer?

We got a quote from developers/software peeps, the actual developer was subcontracted to do the job inc consultation with us, they quoted we accepted. I don’t actually care if it’s ASP.net really any front end would do, the simpler (cheaper?) the better

    Bimbler

    In any terms this:

somebody else … quoting double what we think the job should cost

Would have alarm bells ringing, and I’d be interested in how you came to your estimate based on little or no programming experience. Would you quote for the extension on your house too and tell a builder how much the job should be?

    Maybe read the thread?

    Who designed it

A computer programmer, who worked on international bank databases, hasn’t let us down yet.

designing the database (including normalising it, defining keys, foreign keys, etc), writing any stored procedures, creating maintenance plans, creating backup schedule, installing sql on the server, deploying the database etc.

Database is designed we don’t need it redesigned, merely replicated – I can do it in Access surely a programmer should be able to do it without too much trouble using (MS) sql – but yes to all the other bits, all in the quote, all with hours that each should/would take.

    Bimbler

Did that include developing the Db?

    How do you mean?

    good ASP.NET developer

I don’t think he was, think he was doing it on the fly and as suggested above was looking less profitable for him so he dumped us.

new peeps quoting £10k (no way is there 40 or even 20 days work in this project)

That’s cheap for 20 days for a short term project.

I think the original quote was for 10 days, 80 hours. No doubt that’s cheap too, sigh.

OP if you don’t know the language the front end was written in (or if it was actually finished) how can you make a call on the cost of the work ?

We have an existing legacy system – we pointed at it – showed him how it worked and said – make it work like that but using sql. No problems squire. They came back with a couple of options simple front end or something a bit more whizz bang and internetsy, they pushed the latter we agreed on the quote. Was £5kish a couple of years ago, which seems fine – couple of years bit of inflation also fine – new peeps quoting £10k (no way is there 40 or even 20 days work in this project) just want to see if the old quote was too cheap as possibly alluded to by others or if maybe £10k is the going rate?

Run a few computer languages past me I’m sure I’ll remember.

he then got a nice offer contracting

Sounds like you weren’t paying market rate. You’ll need to pay market rate, which could account for the difference between your expectations and the quotes.

    Pay peanuts…

Maybe so, the guy we ended up with was sub-contracted by the people we’d used before – but he was fully aware of the job and quoted the price in agreement with the contractors.

What is the existing front end written in?

    Existing front end is legacy.

The semi finished/abandoned front end was written in, hang on I forgot (I think the developer didn’t really know it either and was using me as an opportunity to learn new skills, he then got a nice offer contracting and relegated our job to p/t then he stopped communicating altogether the plum) something web/browser friendly?

Are we reading the same review?

The Google Nexus 5 is the high-end Android phone bargain of the year.

Yeah I was talking about the camera.

Sweet phone isn’t it? So so smooth, almost Apple smooth (how do they do that?)

Although something was bothering me ever so slightly about KitKat, found this, as the fella says you won’t be able to “unsee” it

    [minor rant]

I’ve been a bit of a minor on one fanboi in the past and with the Mrs now getting into road biking I pointed her to On One to get some stuff for a 50 miler she was doing. So she buys a bunch of stuff on a Monday afternoon for the sportive on Sunday with “apparently” guaranteed delivery, arrives the following Tuesday.

She sent them a little email of complaint and was told in a badly written reply (!) she hadn’t ordered on a Monday it was Wednesday so delivery the following tuesday was ok. Shame I’ve had positive experiences with OO in the past. Never again from her, shame OO were probably a contender for next year’s summer bike purchase.
