People still “record” stuff? Serious question: why?

Unskippable ads. “Saves” about 15 minutes/hour when watching Taskmaster etc

I really enjoyed Christopher Ruocchio’s “Empire of Silence” Book number 2 in the series, “Howling Dark” was released recently.

If amusing, fun, albeit not the best written pulpish mil-sci-fi is your thing then I highly recommend “Columbus Day” by Craig ALanson (first part of the ExFor series) although enjoyable in written form the audiobooks are better. Skippy the Magnificent is my favourite asshole beer can in all of literature.

Not Sci-Fi but the author Will Wight gave away nearly all of his titles on 4th July. “Bought” them and have just finished piling through all 6 “Cradle” novels which are a kind of psychedelic Japanese fantasy RPG. Read if you like to power up. Can’t wait for book 7.

FWIW I left Android because I didn’t like the seemingly out of control spying and privacy issues on Googles platform, plus the longevity of iPhones, the 6S is 4 years old and still running the very latest software still fast (ish) not (at all) laggy. Unless you’re rooting Androids I don’t think there is a single Android phone of that generation running current software? Admittedly Apples control freakery is annoying but I haven’t regretted the switch at all.

Parks & Recreation – watched it in little chunks when it was on terrestrial a few years ago. Started watching the whole thing properly and in order. Probably my favourite American sit-com. Season 4 has been absolute genius.

Michael Schur created P&R he also wrote/produced for The Office (US), and created Brooklyn 99 and The Good Place. Some talent.

Bought a Play One for the new kitchen diner (it is a pretty big room), wanted to like it, thought it was bobbins for sound returned it and bought a stereo pair of active speakers fed by a Chromecast Audio originally and latterly joined by an Apple Airport thingy. Much betterer for sound but not as neat a solution. Decided that volume and SQ were more important than form factor.

Great shout on Anaal Nathrakh, and from the same album as Forward! (A New Kind Of Horror) check out Mother Of Satan, particularly the chorus. In fact the whole AN back catalogue has lots of amazing stuff.

I’m not particularly au fait with slam metal, but give the odd Spotify playlist a spin (!) some very appropriate stuff there.

Could I live with screen on the xr. I dont run my S9 at full 1440p but it looks vivid enough at 1080p. That’s my only concern.

You’ll miss the OLED goodness, love those blacks but in terms of defintion the XR is fine, in fact it’s a really good screen but I totally get what you mean, I’dve prolly bought one if it was 1080p even though in the real world you wouldn’t ever notice the difference. Stupid. Besides fewer pixels = better battery.

I’ve been Android since my first HTC Desire about 10 years ago but have just switched over to an iPhone.

Admittedly I didn’t get the best deal as I bought a new 6S (could have saved a lot going second hand) but bearing in mind it’s a 3.5 year old phone it’s excellent. It runs brilliantly and really does just work. My other half always has iPhones, never the latest ones, and after 2+ years are always still running well. My previous Android phones were unlikely to make it much past a year without some kind of issue, and were worthless to resell.

I never thought I’d see the day that I swapped.

Are you me? Same except I bought a S/H 6s for £280 a year ago, after my S7 Edge just past it’s 2nd birthday passed away peacefully as I slept. Took advantage of the £25 battery swap (another advantage for Apple, their stores, which are a bit odd imo) and I’m happy. Never really understood the it just works mantra, because my HTC’s, Samsungs and Nexus phones all just worked, except they just worked because I made them just work, never really took it on board that this wasn’t the norm all round.

Thinking of giving the iPhone Xr a whirl or the S10e.

    They’re both battery champs.

Tomsguide did a comparative review, I’m sure there are plenty more out there

Apple are also offering money off if you trade in an old iPhone, for instance the 6s gets you a £150 off.

The smart money would probably be a second hand iPhone. Change my mind.

CEX charge top $ for their iPhones but you do get a two year warranty, although what this is worth I’m not sure.

Great shout on the Bongripper, one of my fave albums last year. Favourite track “O”.

Been on a bit of a non-trad tech-death tip recently.

Firstly from last year, the incomparable Slugdge, a two piece from Lancashire, ooh I see they’ve expanded to a 4 piece including the Black Dhalia murder drummer, which is cool because I thought the drums, although quite good were one of the weakest parts of the latest album “Esoteric Malacology”

From 2017 Archspires unbelievable Relentless Mutation album is chock full of killer, ffo incredible musicians, speed, technicality, sewing machine snares, and an amazing vocalist

Anther recent fave Rivers of Nihil, the “Where Owls Know My Name” video from the album “Where Owls Know My Name”, ffo Saxophones (yes, really, personally I hate the honking abominations but here they actually work)

Been with “Virgin” since dial up Telewest days, both in London and now in Herts. Never had a major problem with them and always overdelivered on line speed.

Safe to say it does NOT look like a high tech operation

A new-ish development near me recently had Virgin around (well some contractors working on behalf of Virgin, so I guess they should take the credit not Virgin) and couldn’t believe how neat and tidy all the holes they dug were, cleaned/tidied up every night and the infilling and finishing top tarmac are very neat. I wish the council/BT/Gas/Leccy were as good.

Love Death + Robots was fantastic. Anyone who enjoys 2000AD, future shock and twist in the tale type sf shorts will love this. Stand out for me was Alastair Reynolds’ “Beyond the Aquila Rift”.

18 sf animated shorts in different styles all 5-17 minutes long

To further address your point sparky, Barney was in puppie/dog training for about 2 of his first 3 years, the group classes were quite fun but they’re really just teaching the owners just as much as the dogs (which they all are really). In the end we found a specialist trainer for dogs with “interesting” behaviour and tbf she was great and my partner in particular got a lot from the sessions. Calmed down in the end but he still has a tendency to chase things.

In you position I’d try and find a one on one trainer and pay for some one on one sessions, may be expensive but small beer compared to what could be 15 years of dog ownership

Good luck. My whippet/collie (he’s a rescue from Ireland so could be anything but he definitely looks like a Whippet collie cross) was a complete and utter twunt for the first 3 years of his life. Never really had a general problem with recall other than when he was chasing tractors, bikes, motorbikes, cows, horses, joggers, kites, scooters, trains and in one memorable instance a mobility scooter (fyi he absolutely p1ssed that one).

Still has moments of madness but he’s much, much calmer now, at 7yo. If yours has a collie brain as mine does a tennis ball may soon be your and his best friend.

    Good luck!

Is there some sort of intelligent handover as you move from one BT disc to another, which 2 WAPs won’t have?

Yeah I think so. I’ve never used a WAP domestically but I have (a set of three) of the BT whole home routers and the handover between discs is seemless (ooh super cheap on Amazon atm). I wished I’d got one of the Linksys or Netgear alternatives but price won out.

I’m really sorry that Rachel is upset about all the trans posts on here however being “woke” and accepting everything the TRA’s say is not canon. There are debates to be had especially about gender recognition, self id, transgenders in sport etc.

You don’t have to accept the “born in the wrong body” mantra to be kind, accepting and understanding of the no doubt invidious position of transgendered people.

10 years, but I’ve doubled the CPU power, doubled the Ram, tripled the GPU power and storage and moved to an SSD for boot.

    Really, desktops FTW

    Triggers broom.

Running a 2012 Dell. Added SSD. Works really well for all the usual browsing, office stuff etc.

Don’t wish to be seen as an edgelord or anything but American Psycho was funny and too contrived to shock (read it on release, so I’m not thinking about the movie)

But yeah, The Road, think about on a weekly basis.

I cant see how that alters a life time of a mans physiology enough that they no longer hold a strength advantage.

It doesn’t. Also don’t forget the skeletal advantage of males.

Most, if not all, of pre-ground stuff is far too fine.

What difference does it make? I have an Espresso machine but use one of these when I fancy “different” coffee have used Lavazza Black, Gold and Red in the linked maker – seemed to work fine. I’ve also used some beans roughly ground in a food processor – not much/any difference?

If you like long coffee and don’t want to go for the expense and complexity of any of the above then how about an Ikea coffee maker this is the fancy pants glass double walled job but they also do a 400ml personal one without the double wall niceness for £5. It’s alright

I have a set of Roth VA4’s (certificate for website is out of date) very pleased with them (less pleased with the CCA) although the remote control is a bit crappy. Kept a (young) teenage party banging for a few hours. They also have the Roth Oli

If you want to spend more then the Ruark Audio MR1’s get fantastic reviews but just a bit too pricey when I bought the Roths if you really want to push the boat out then the Kef X300A looks lovely though I haven’t heard them.

I’ve got Virgin Vivid 200Mbps, and get speeds of 206-210Mbps it’s great but it doesn’t really “seem” that much faster than the 100Mbps I had previously. Conversely I went around my old dears and she’s been upgraded to Vivid 350 and that seems blazing fast, she gets about 364Mbps. Worth it imo.

Yes. Had a dose of Bleph last year, fkn horrible, especially for contact lens wearers. Saw my Contact Lens dude and he said something along the lines of “tears are made from various different fluids and when you have blepharitis you lose the lubricating part of the tear so your eyes over produce the other stuff to make up for it.” Sorry recollection of this is a bit hazy.

I cured it with a combination of Blephaclean and regular cleaning with baby shampoo as Blephaclean is quite expensive.

Yes, Corporal Jenko, the last man standing

Good (great?) player no doubt but his demands are more than Arsenal and Unai want to pay, who traditionally, apparently, doesn’t play with a “running on to the play” type midfielder. Dunno about that, just repeating what I read on the internetz.

Who would have guessed that the Corporal would be the last man standing from this photo

    Last man standing
