    My bad.

I always dip my lid mounted light when I see oncoming traffic, but in reality I have no idea whether this is of any benefit to people coming towards me!

I would actually like to know how my lights (front and rear) look to others, but all I can assume is that they aren’t too bad as no one has thumped me yet!

I’m unsure why any car company would make different control stalks for different fuel types?! Mental.

What car is it? You may not need an exact replacement – another from the same range may do it?

Lovely video with great tunes too – enjoyed that! 🙂

What are the tunes apart from ‘Coasting’?

    cr500dom –
Are they Velo Orange guards on that ?
If not what are they ?

They are indeed. I really didn’t rate the SKS Longboards I had before these – the internal stay mounts let water build up like a dam.

Nothing’s perfect though, I much prefer the VO guards (these are the stainless steel version), but I find it really could do with an additional strut on the front due to the front projection – however it’s really only noticable on very rough roads so I can put up with it.

Jamis Nova Sport. Cheap and stiff. Fast, but I miss my MTB for commuting.

Aren’t flat bar road bikes what our cousins on the continent use for commuting?

I thought it was only us Brits that were too tarty for this and used drop bar bikes for commuting when they may not be the most suitable?

There are some good 50% off offers on Crank Brothers bars at CRC at the moment. Not sure if they are quite the rise you are after, but they are frickin’ cheap!

PeterPoddy – just because I’ll be doing similar soon it would be nice to see those pics if it’s not too much trouble?

That’s what I was hoping. So a fork with a 1 1/8 steerer tube and something like a hope traditional headset should do the trick?

    billytinkle

Current set up is all the standard stuff from ’96, so quill stem, impact headset and project 2 forks.

Buzzlightyear I do not like riding in heavy rain

I was starting to dislike the rain until I saw that!

    I’ve tried:

    – Endura Dexter – good for cooler days, look nice, but not waterproof at all.

    – Endura MT500 – like the BBB’s above, warm, but not completely waterproof. Well made and tough.

    – GripGrab Hammerhead – reviews said excellent, feet still get wet. No better than MT500 for waterproofing and have fallen apart within a month. Avoid.

    Still searching for something better.

There’s something inherently wrong with driving the front wheel on any bike in my opinion.

Not only would the motor in the rear wheel be ‘right’, it would look even more subtle.

I’ve tried the gloves route too! Got massive pads on my paws.

    Its a Jamis Nova Sport 54cm and I’m 5’9″.

Seat is as far back as it will go, but I’ve not tried a lay back seat post.

The front end has been through every variation possible including different shaped drop bars. Some improvements experienced, but all just different levels of discomfort!

That graffiti and bike were made for each other. I suspect a rattle can in the top tube bag.

Raw vegetables are perfectly acceptable treats. The look on their faces as you hand them a potato is priceless.

You don’t get so many knocking beggars the next year either.

Sheldon does have an article for converting to 700c to 650b, so I’d imagine some of that will apply going from 650b to 26″.

If you go 26″ you’ll probably find enough room to fit guards if you want them. I think Sheldon also mentioned BMX brakes having the additional adjustment to compensate for the wheel size difference.

I think high vis a good idea, but the way it’s often implimented isn’t great – standard high vis jackets do not make good cycling attire.

I’d put forward suggestions for a more cycling specific garment with reflectives, or even just a reflective sash type thing.

Superstar have them too, but not listed on their website last time I looked. Had to ask for them.

No quick release, but I’m aware of the risks. My plan is to avoid debris and I’ve mounted the guard very close to the tyre in a bid to avoid crap being sucked up there.

I can’t promise that the stays wouldn’t need tweaking on any bike, but they certainly didn’t on this one, which made me very happy. This is as close a picture as I have of the fitting, but could get something closer later if needed: (edit – click the pic for zoom options)

The stays simply went under the callipers. Nice.

SKS were recommended as one of the best mudguards for the road, but I found them to be a disappointment. The stay mounts inside the guards just caused a dam for water to pour down onto my feet and fitting them was very time consuming as the stays needed to be bent to work with disk brakes.

I’ve very recently changed to Velo Orange stainless mudguards and they seem to be much better. No stay bending required and no internal stay mounts! They could still be improved, but for me – better than the SKS offerings.

If it’s advertising then it has done its job. I doubt the video would have got more than a couple of comments on here without the boobs – hell, maybe it wouldn’t have even been posted at all.

Took a while to get in – added 15 mins to my 45 min commute. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be to be honest.

I had similar yesterday – approaching a rough level crossing a Tesco van thought that was the ideal place to overtake.

I was probably doing 15mph or so, but dispite keeping up, and having to slow for traffic that was reducing speed for the crossing ahead of me, the Tesco lad still persisted in trying to make a pass.

He managed to get his cab level with me before before realising there there was no where for him to go.

Some people just see a bike and ‘must get past’. I don’t get it.

As ir_bandito says the longboards are an extended version of bluemels, so there shouldn’t be any problems there, but I do find the fact that the stay mounts are located on the inside of the guard to be a poor design.

The stay mounts act as a dam and send the water out from the guard at that point.

I can’t see that I can mount the guard any closer to the tyre without causing rubbing issues, so maybe the tyres are too wide for the guards? 35c tyres, 45mm longboards on a CX bike by the way.

Cold has never really bothered me to be honest – it’s just the water! I hate the squelch and having to dry shoes out, it just seems to take forever!

My wet kit currently consists of GripGrab Hammerhead overshoes with Endura Stealth light tights (over the top of the overshoes) and SKS longboard mudguards – and yet I’m still getting wet feet within a 40 minute commute with heavy rain 😡

Maybe the tights aren’t doing their job well enough and letting water down the top of the overshoes.

I know I have an issue with water hitting the front upper mudguard stay causing water to drip directly onto my shins and feet. Have tried taping the inside of the guard to stop this, but with little benefit. I know I could move the stay bracket to the outside or go with thiner tyres, but I’d rather not.

    Might buy a velomobile.

There are a couple of types. The hollow tube that just screws in and then clamps at one end is much better in my opinion – and that sounds like what you have.

Have you experimented with saddle angle?
