The cheap ones on CRC are all sold out – not surprised considering the price everywhere else!

The fact they are so expensive means I’ll change my plans. They weren’t essential for my current build, I’ll just stick with what I’ve got.

    Thanks for the help.

Smaller rotor equals smaller mechanical advantage, so a slightly less powerful brake.

If they’ve not been used before they will perform badly until they’ve had a chance to bed in too.

Schwalbe Kojaks might be worth a try? The 26″ version went on very easily to 26″ Crest rims I had. 700 x 35c available.

Adhesives and the cold generally don’t mix well either, so when you apply make sure both parts are warm as well as clean for a good application.

I went from 26″ Kojaks to 700c Kojaks for my commute and wasn’t disappointed! As you say, great tyres 😀

Most of the filler is now off. I ended up taking a drill wire wool attachment to it. It was rock hard so needed something quite coarse, but this also gave the aluminium a tough time and left some deep scratches. With hindsight I would just leave it next time!

Gave it a rub down with sand paper and wire wool, but it’s not perfect and there are still small amounts of filler left in difficult to access areas. It’s only a commuter build though and I’m lazy so it’s staying that way! Looks ok away from bright light, so perfect for UK conditions!

100 hours!!? I assume that was to polish it up too though? I must admit I got a bit impatient and went at the filler with a blow torch. This got a small amount off, but not enough and made the remainder look a bit mank so I now have to finish the job.

I bought a wire brush attachment for the drill and now have most off it off in under an hour, but this has had the undesirable effect of leaving some deep scratches in the aluminium.

So now I guess I’ll have to sand the scratches down to smooth it out again and then go over it with 3M fine synthetic steel wool from Homebase to get it back to how it looked before I attacked it.

    Joy.

I think ebikes are great. Would love to have one for my commute – much better/cheaper to run than a car and wouldn’t be far off a car in total journey time for me.

Off road I can’t see a major issue with it – I doubt many of them will see real trail off road use anyway.

I’ve found the Topeak Defender M2 to be tough enough. No rattles, breaks or issues. I like the quick release too.

Doesn’t sound like you want to sell quickly to me! Decent pics from a camera phone will be good enough, then stick it on ebay like a few others have said from 99p.

It will sell within a week. Also try and make sure the auction finishes at a time when people will be around to bid on it. Most of the bidding activity happens at the end, so an auction finishing on Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening should do well.

Donk – it’s just cable ties for the celebrations tub – and a little rubber tap washer for spacing for the seat tube.

Thanks for posting Bigcam! Had no idea you’d be on here! I thought it would be mounted via the BB – sandwiched between frame and bottom bracket like some bash guards and chain retention devices.

I was thinking of getting something knocked up to mount via a ISCG05 adapter or similar when I get round to it. I was inspired a little by the Trek Broadsider’s bash guard.

We have a visonic powermax. Very happy with it and had good range to guard the shed without an extender too.

I agree with you about the chain thong – it doesn’t extend far enough to cover the lower part of the chain ring, but the home made example looks like it’d do the job? Albeit in a very ugly way.

I find drivers are like sheep, if you get one bad pass from the head of the group, the rest will follow with similar road positioning.

Likewise if you get a good pass with lots of space, following cars will also pass nicely.

That said, some Vauxhall Vectra has my name on it I reckon.

If you’re running full length outers how do you manage the cables under the bottom bracket?

The standard cable guides look like they will only accommodate inner cables. Is there a neat way of managing them?

I used to enjoy driving fast on the roads for fun, then I started doing track days and immediately lost all interest in driving fast on public highways, I just didn’t see the point any more.

I’m confused as to where you stand on the whole speeding thing now.

I have two viewpoints on speeding. When I’m commuting to work on my bike I’m very much against it. When I’m behind the wheel myself I’ll pick and choose which limits I adhere to.

I quite clearly say that the example I used is not sensible, and you say I’m being ridiculous.

It’s the internet- surely you don’t expect me to read the whole thing?!

How are those adapters held in place? Just clamped between the frame and BB? Do they not twist in use?

It’s entirely the point. Can you give us some references to the incident you’re referring to?

Sorry, I really should have put ‘that’s really not my point’ rather than ‘the’ point. I’m sure you have a different viewpoint, and that’s your prerogative.

Drivers will use pretty much any defence to justify their wrong doings on the road – see The Flying Ox’s quite ridiculous post.

Forget why the kid was there or what speed the car was doing – I was just illustrating that many people have the belief that they know what will be on the roads, and that belief is simply incorrect.

Why would you drive at 30 in a 70mph limit? All I’m saying is don’t drive in excess of 70.

I don’t know why the kid was there and that’s really not the point. Expect the unexpected is.

If you’re driving a dual carriageway at 4:30am with no other vehicles other than the odd 16-wheeler every 20 miles or so (which I do, semi-regularly) then 80-90mph isn’t going to harm anyone.

Tell that to the family of the young lad that died on a dual carriageway at that sort of time after being hit by a car on new years day morning.

You just don’t know what might be on the road. Extra thinking and stopping time will always help.

I’d be very surprised if any man on here regarded them self as anything other than average or better when it comes to driving – yet it’s pretty obvious if you watch a road for 5 minutes that it’s simply not the case.

But wait, what if people take a long hard look at themselves and realise that maybe, just maybe they aren’t a good driver? Maybe they should even stop doing it for the safety of others? Their world would end – they can’t get to work, they lose their independence and they are seen as an oddity in general society. That’s why it doesn’t happen.

It’s easy to look at others an judge, and it’s even easier to forgive your own errors if there are no consequences.

One day though, there may be a consequence. And that consequence could be the taking of another person’s life. I’m sure some will say that’s a bit serious and unlikely, and that might be true.

All I know is, I never want to end someone’s life because I was only thinking of myself.

It would appear that many road users have a nasty sense of entitlement and many disregard the law due to pompous and selfish attitudes.

It’s clear from posts in this thread that many believe they are clearly better drivers than the majority and therefore they can flout laws that have been put into place to protect others.

I’m not saying that the speed limits are set to high or too low and I don’t really see the point of arguing it – why change it when so many people die on the roads?

People can try to dismiss it, but the faster you travel the less time you have to react to anything that happens.

I look forward to the day when black boxes get into every car and breaking the law behind the wheel becomes impossible to avoid. Or when the task of driving is taken away from us altogether.

As an aside, I can’t really see how people can complain about the price of fuel and yet continue to mash the loud pedal at every opportunity either!

I have a lovely medium Giant XTC carbon frame that would do you nicely. It would come in well under your budget, also. I’m 5’10 and it fits me perfectly.

I’ve already been specifically told to keep it outside in the allotted spaces. No problem with that as long as it’s reasonably secure.

My bike isn’t too flashy, an old kona frame with a few modern bits and pieces on it. It looks a bit lonely on its own in such a large storage area – no bling bike camouflage for it!

Is everyone using genuine 3M stuff? I’m assuming there are some copies out by now that may not be so effective?

That said – I imagine it’ll never provide the reflectivity of the lighter colours.
