I’ve been using a set of dry suit ankle cuffs to seal my north wave boots for a few months now. They work so well they actually stopped it raining for a while. Best bit of commuting gear I own.

Taken from an article on bikehub.co.uk –

Many cycle lanes can now be found on footways, with signage and markings telling cyclists and pedestrians the route is for ‘shared use’. Cyclists must not assume this means they have right of way on the cycle ‘half’ of the shared-use facility. According to this Code of Conduct from the Department of Transport, cyclists should “always respect pedestrians even if they stray onto the cycling side (if there is one); they are entitled to do so. Always thank people who move out of your way.”

I was under the impression that pedestrians always have the right of way on a shared use path – is that not correct?

I made a list and put my DVD’s up for £1 each at work on the notice board. Lots of interest and sold half within a week which is more than music magpie or cex would give me for the lot.

I went with zoggs predator flex as they had the highest number of good reviews on wiggle. I must say I’m very impressed with them. Never before have I had goggles that keep water out without having to be so tight they leave indentations on my head.

Thanks for all the advice. We went with simple oil, salt and lemon and it was absolutely delicious! Best piece of fish I’ve had in a long time.

Helmet mounted exposure diablo and moon shield here for the last couple of years, been very happy with the setup on a very similar commute to the OP.

I left mine raw, but I’m finding that sweat is causing a few stains on it that don’t wash off. Thinking of spraying the frame with something like plasti-kote clear.

Kerrygold only in our house, my wife won’t have anything else after reading a load of god knows what on the net.

Not for me though at the moment. I’m on an elimination diet to try and identity an intolerance. Most boring diet ever.

I was out jogging yesterday and ran past a courier lorry with its load doors fully open and the driver just disappearing from view. It would have been easy to take something.

The Stay is good located by the port, can be expensive, but stick to the set menu and you can get top food for a reasonable price.

It’s a commuting mtb. I do have a reasonable hill to negotiate each day, but I’ve given it a go using the 44t only and whilst it was more of a challenge, it wasn’t too bad.

Thanks for the replies, everyday is a school day. Will get it down the tip later today.

I wouldn’t call it fly tipping – well, not unless I can fly tip on my own property. There’s never a shortage of people wanting free stuff round my way.

It was in good working order when I put it out on our drive with a sign that said ‘free, please take’.

After having a bit of a play about with an spare crank set I had laying about it appears that it won’t be so simple for me.

It looks like I should have mentioned that I wanted to run a large 44t ring up front. The big ring won’t fit in the middle ring position without some metal work.

Is the easiest option simply to buy a single specific ring?

Ok, cool – it is a hardtail. Nice when things are simple!

When you say you reused as many of your old parts as possible – you didn’t include the wheels did you?

    Well, someone had to ask!

What about an arm band? The type that runners use for their phones – lots of variety on eBay and Amazon for not much money.

Spinning out in top gear on the flat with 44t front and most likely 12t on the cassette?

I don’t want to appear feeble to the STW cycling gods, but I run a very similar set up and only have a spinning out problem on quite steep hills.

I swapped my 12t cog for an 11t, but that was as much as I could be bothered to do for the minimal gains.

Thanks for the questions, gave me a few things to look at. After further investigation it turns out The pistons weren’t returning fully. A very thorough clean and normal service has been resumed.

Andy – I run a large disc on the commuter simply because it helps with interchangeability in the shed. Was handy being able to swap rotors between bikes to rule it out as a cause and I like knowing I have spares ready when needed.

I spent a while looking for a G-Shock I liked for everyday use – in the end I went for this…

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Casio-G-Shock-DW-5600MS-1-DW-5600MS-Multi-function-Alarm-Watch-Brand-New-/231286515688?pt=UK_Jewelery_Watches_Watches_MensWatches_GL&hash=item35d9c027e8

    Cheap, digital and waterproof.

I’ve had the beeping issue a few times. Plugging it into my windows 7 machine always seems to fix it – windows picks up on the error and asks if it should scan and fix faults.

I did wonder who had wound up the driver of a new Skoda estate on my ride home this afternoon. All I could hear was a car approaching from behind with the throttle pinned. My heart sank as I saw a van coming the other way guaranteeing inadequate passing space for the rapidly closing car behind me. I tucked myself in to the side of the road as best I could and took a deep breath. I can only thank the van driver for slowing and squeezing over too. It felt like a narrow escape, unfortunately I know it won’t be the last.

Always a smart suit for an interview. White or light blue shirt too. Also pick tie colour carefully. I’d go for royal blue or purple – as they are generally perceived as giving the impression of loyalty and trust. Avoid power colours like red and orange.

It’s one thing I really like about commuting by bike – there’s plenty of regulars who exchange pleasantries every day. It’s what separates us from the animals car drivers.
