The estimate from the Lancet is multiple times that figure.

Nah, I’m quite an expert at putting a plug in. Ever thought about the increased cost of trying to heat a damp house, repairing crumbling plaster and ill-health from breathing in mold?

I’ve had both and found the dehumidifier more effective, flexible and, unlike the PIV, produces heat.

Absolutely no problem with mine, performed in a hospital, apart from leaving me with an associative memory involving burnt bacon.

Slight digression but Tim Kasser’s research in this area is always worth a re-visit:

Musee D’Orsay if only to see Burne-Jones’ ‘Wheel of Fortune’. Watch your back on the Metro, keep your stuff zipped up on inside pockets. Sadly, I think the Centre Pompidou is shut for refurbs.

Blimey this ‘sixth form’stuff is so tedious, coming from a Gumby with a chip butty on both shoulders having been told at sixteen he wasn’t suitable for further education. Give us a ‘king break. Amongst my former (working class) students you’ll find an MP, a judge, a number of solicitors, a head teacher, all doing something a bit useful. And they had good socialist politics as sixth formers, by degrading them you degrade yourself, massively.

A two state entity would mean a return to the status quo ante, an  apartheid state and a super-exploited dependent state of refugees. Not going to happen. A single secular democratic state based on equality for all is the only answer.

Looks like your street has become an ‘operation centre’. Might be a nice bloke but is he behaving like one? I’d be getting all nimby about that. Plus you’ve got a dirty great diesel engine being started up at what hours and kicking out all those fumes in a residential area. **** that for a game of soldiers.

I do this trip quite often. Ferry to St Malo then drive to Saintes and stay at the Abbe de Dames (parking no problem), next day cross the ferry over the Gironde and then down to Hourtin or Messanges or wherever. Place that really impresses us is La Rochelle (great vibes, bikes everywhere, good restaurants and bars, not so loud and brash). Last year I did it avoiding motorways and barely saw a car and saved a few quid.

NB we did have 2 bikes in the car and the passenger window got smashed in Normandy but nothing stolen. Had to book an alternative ferry but on it ran into a schoolmate who I hadn’t seen for 50 yrs. So every cloud….

Blimey, reading the Wiki entry of Lammy’s bewildering contradictory meanderings, to be generous I’d say he’s someone who likes to be on the winning side (no idea of THFC is a good choice in that context). It’s one thing to qualify as a barrister, it’s quite another to have a desk in chambers.

If you like wine, get Vivino on your phone and do a bit of snapping and scoring in the supermarkets, there are some real bargains to be had. Wine growers in the Bordeaux area have dropped their prices this year by 20% (overproduction, US election, changing tastes amongst the young).  I was just clearing out the car and found another 6 bottles bringing the total to 51 bottles of Medoc, and that’s alongside 2 bikes, tent, mattress, two suitcases all inside the car. It can be done.

Where roads are joining a national or autoroute try and be in the outside lane as they seem to relentlessly assert priorite a droit. Just back from 3 weeks in France, I don’t think I heard a horn being blown once. Civilised driving indeed.

Oh try not to leave visible stuff in the car. I had a passenger window smashed but the alarm saved our 2 passports, 2 bikes and 45 bottles.

A matron at Uppingham school recounted to me how an ex-pupil had left and got into Oxford. Mid-term he phoned her up to ask how to iron a shirt.

It is staggering to think about what sort of country would put those two up against each other in a presidential race rather in a than a care home. It really is beyond belief.

TJ after I wrote that it occurred to me it came from ‘Whose Law, What Order’ by Chambliss and Mankoff. Without recreational drugs we may well have missed out on the lakeland poets, Sigmund Freud, William Burroughs, Ernest Hemingway, Hockney, but with legalisation we may have saved the lives of Hendrix, Joplin, Jones, etc etc.

Was it not the case that marijuana was criminalised in the US because it was feared that post-slavery black people using it might become rebellious? I believe Queen Victoria consumed dope to aid her in childbirth, fair oot! Drug laws are all tied up with politics, business, the DM, hypocrisy. Blimey just think of all the deadly crap that is fast food, sugar, alcohol and fizzy pop.  The legal availability of graded, light to heavy duty weed could keep people away from the more dangerous stuff. MJ is not a gateway drug any more than mother’s milk is.
