Some while back Cosmopolitan did a survey to find out who women thought would be the best England goalkeeper. They found that most women preferred Seaman to Flowers.
    Just a thought.

I'm a great fan of Easky, great little village packed with pubs and music (particularly the Lobster Pot) and the Easky Rights provide serious surfing.

I'm looking after a mate's house at the mo and he's got a Naim CD setup with Royd speakers and I'm dreading going back to hearing music on anything else.

I'll be out in the woods on Boxing Day. I find having one or two 'smoothie' meals a day, cutting out the carbs, makes the weight come off pretty quickly. I do a fruit breakfast one with a few oats and a lunchtime raw vegetables smoothie. They give off a rush like no other food.

I've known of quite a few instances of Christian parents complaining to schools when something's been said in the classroom that they don't like. I'm sure they'd go further if they thought they could get away with it. This is not a sacking 'based on belief', what has praying got to do with GCSE maths? It's someone making an unsolicited and irrational assertion of their superstitions. On the other hand, if it worked we could pack up teaching kids and just get on our knees. Think of the savings! Why don't fairies ever get pregnant?

Because they only go to goblin parties.

I was at a lecture given by the happiness/wellbeing guy at Harvard (Tal Ben Shahar) on depression. They treated patients in three groups: one on drugs, one group on drugs and execise, one group on exercise only. The group that clocked up the best recovery levels was the exercise only group. I would also add 1 hour of broad daylight per day…and it can't be saved up.

I used to hang out in the late 70s in the house (landcross Road, Fallowfield) which the Young Ones was based on. Had the real Vivien at my 40th (and he disgraced himself!)

Once sat opposite the Tory MP Harvey Proctor and wished him 'good luck with the whips'
Was in the same class (primary and secondary) as Stephen Harris (of Iron Maiden)
Taught a girl who was in the Olympics for trampolining and currently teaching one who is being prepared to bounce in the next Olympics
Once walked past Prince Charles in the street and made a point of completely ignoring him (not that he's have noticed)

I did one and loved it. Teaching has taken me to Australia on exchange for a year, to Oxford on a teacher's bursary, to Boston (Mass) for a conference (and going again next year). It's a hard job and I've taught in some rough environments but it's very rewarding. I've helped students go on to do all sorts of things and many keep in touch. Personally I couldn't get excited about someone else's profits and teaching pays me 40 odd grand for doing something I really enjoy.

I marked exam papers for a 'Manmeet' and a 'Dipa Mistry'and I taught a very nasty piece of work called 'Zubair'. There was a girl on my PGCE course whose name was 'Shirley Kitcat' but she changed it by deed poll after her first TP.

Coffeeking, rape and robbery with violence stories occupy about 46% of crime stories in newspapers but they are only 3% of all recorded crime. The crime rate is actually falling but people's perceptions are encouraged to be based on fear of everworsening crime. This is a neat way of justifying more cctv, more police powers, armed police etc etc. All very important things when the system is in crisis.

Search out the very good review article on Minton's book:

Skidartist, one of the(many) points about Wilkinson's data plus the UN table of childhood wellbeing is that so much more can be achieved even within the context of capitalism. A slightly different direction but check out Anna Minton's 'Ground Control' and Tim Kasser's 'High Price of Materialism'. All this stuff links up and shows how we're currently going in the very wrong neoliberal direction.

If you check Wilkinson's slide on social mobility, the most unequal countries have the least hope of moving up. In that context, people are more likely to behave in a chaotic and self-destructive fashion plus become obese.

Teenage pregnancy is higher in countries with the greatest income inequality. High in UK and US, low in Japan, Scandinavia. Check the data ppt from Richard Wilkinson's book 'The Spirit Level' on 'TheEqualityTrust.org'….interesting stuff.

I wouldn't bother. The 'warm' water lasts roughly until Autumn half term and I like the contact of my feet on the board. Make sure your suit fits well because paddling can be really exhausting in a poorly fitting suit. If you hire a board, go as big as you can get…easier paddling and easier popping up.

If you do decide on a custom, talk to Chops Lascelles at Beach Beat, St Agnes. This guy's been around forever, he's a legend in his country of origin (Oz) and he now has a hi-tec computerised set-up for designing and shaping. For English surf I'd go for a longboard, I've a 9'9'' cruiser and an Aussie 9'2''. The 9'2'' I hired in Byron Bay this summer was ideal for a wide range of waves. Be wary of getting too small a board, they're harder to paddle and won't take off in English slop. Also the only way to gain paddling fitness is to paddle and for most of us inland that's not an option. If I was in the market for a board I'd go for a tuflite as they are exactly that. Pop-outs are awful.

I've just had a month in Aus and didn't find it too expensive. Beer is about the same but I hired a car for $19 a day with East Coast Car Hire, petrol is about $1.25 gallon, accomodation can be dirt cheap e.g. $26 in backpacker's. UGG boots are expensive.

Church’s Grafton brogue is better, retail at £350 but I got a perfect pair in their factory shop in Northampton a couple of weeks ago for £145. Result. NB Trickers have a factory shop too.

Evans’ website has a savings calculator. I just got a Genesis Core 40 yeasterday on the scheme as a supplement to my Maverick. It’s a great bike and will cost me £42 a month for a year (my employer doesn’t charge anything at the end of the scheme). I can’t afford not to save that sort of money, it’s a no-brainer.
