Is that some sort of bumsex euphemism, or is ‘onboarding’ some new unnecessary mangling of the English language to somehow make hiring people sound more impressive?

It’s a term commonly used for employing more staff Boomer.
If bumsex is your thing, please use appropriate methods to protect you and your partner(s) and simply wiping your cock with sanitising gel is not deemed effective.

little vintage stroker too. There used to be a lot of Spanish trials

Well, I looked around for 2yrs before settling on mine. There was plenty around, some looked brand new and others boxes of bits. I wanted a bike with matching numbers, which is harder than you think, and a few upgrades but not mint.

There is a good small circuit, twinshock trials is definitely a thing and thankfully we all seem to more respectful of each other and the places we ride.

But I did buy it to ride some small single country lanes and discover new places at slower speeds. I’m having lights fitted next weekend to help with being seen and being able to stay out later in the summer evenings.

I’d recommend it for anyone interested in old bikes and a good friendship social.

    As for work…

Contingency is in full flow, we are maxed out provisioning laptops and tech for remote access.
I’ve onboarded 14techs in the last 5days to cope, and I think I’ll need more.

Looking good for our bottom line 🤪

As to the UK, what we don’t know at the moment is how many of the reported cases are imports and how many are from local transmission

We should lock our borders, stop people leaving and entering the country.

I’ve heard that argument before… was it March2016 through June2016?

    Some people will be happy…

Apparently the overall cost is the same to the company whether we’re contractor or perm.

No “apparently” about it. It costs the organisation the same amount whether you are perm or contractor. We just account for it in a different way.

Granted some benefits like Life Insurance/Perks for lunch/bonus/pensions etc. Aren’t the same, and nor should they be. That’s for the contractor to pay themselves those perks.

We aren’t far away from the deadline, I’m keen to see people’s views once this has come into force.

It’s affecting another mate of mine who is a sound engineer, does mostly TV stuff, run through an agency but via his own LTD company.
Single supply chain/client, tasked out for length of production, has travel/overnight to payout for and vehicle/equipment.

Now you’d think he’s a self employed “genuine” self employed sound engineer. Yet IR35 is knocking on his door too.

I foresee plenty of legal challenges in the near future.

Seems to me what with this particular issue and the Covid19 that employers and organisations have a review of employer/employee relationship.

Plenty of work can be done from home with a laptop and some form of connection. Being in the office 5days a week is archaic and totally unnecessary burden on employee/employer.

Heres to the 20thC (since I’ve been able to work remotely since the last decade…

Honesty I think “good on em’ “

It was once lucrative to contract, LTD perks and all that. But as an employer we only budgeted/spent the same on contractors as per employee as an FTE.

2 close friends of mine have been contracting for at least 20yrs, have great reputations and are in demand.. they’ve enjoyed every perk known to man and I applaud them for their resilience through out the ever changing marketplace.

It remains to be seen how this affects them, as one has been offered an FTE role he currently undertakes… and he’s naturally reluctant because the pay gap is quite substantial.

But Jimdub makes the point far better than I have.

    Risk aversion, simple.

We are only issuing FTC’s from now on. Our main client has issued similar policy and that’s how we will manage it from now on.

I have heard Umbrella is an option for other organisations, but that’s their choice.

I myself contracted for a little while years ago, I went through an umbrella company the agent had and I paid the same tax as everyone else. Then that role turned perm and I stayed there for years after that, recently ex colleagues of mine have been knocking on the door about roles and opportunities but I’ve said the same as I’ve said here to them.

They’ve not been happy with the message, but we don’t live in the world we used to so you have to either suck it up and pay tax at source via PAYE or …. well….. don’t take the job.

Agree to some extent that FTC’s offer no material benefits (holiday entitlement accru) but when contracts were typically 6/12mths maybe an extension contractors were forced to take 4weeks close out anyway (meaning no pay)

But, I didn’t make the rules. You have your glorious leaders for these changes so blame them.

We issued a directive yesterday “no global travel unless business critical”

That directive came from our main client and we now have adopted their rules too. This makes our working life awkward for implementation and transformation into sites, but the client makes the call to protect their workforce and suppliers into that. APAC has been a no-go since last week, so 4 programmes have been mothballed until further notice. Thats quite a hit to our bottom line, but thats just how it is. We’ve retained key staff (we don’t use contractors) so I’ve set them off on other work that needs to be completed for future implementations.

We do see some positives, it’s making planning easier and resource deployment. And our clients are supporting us though these few months. I expect summertime we will know more, but Cali calling a state of emergency does seem rather extreme (thats where our main client is based) and clients seem to be taking it all in hand in a relaxed and professional manner without panic.

My wife however seems to be in some kind of self containment protocol, having bought all manner of cleaning products and gels and what not. Giving constant missives like “don’t shake hands, don’t touch anything, wash your hands for 4hrs15mins because…..” Frankly I think she’s edging towards some sort of mental breakdown and turning her into one of those ridiculous frightened Whaling Daily reader types.

As for lyingblohards comments, to be fair to him there really isn’t a fat lot people can do about this apart from personal hygiene regime that people should have been employing since childhood.. Who hasn’t seen folks come out of toilets without washing their hands? dirty scabs.

    ^^ This.

I’ve stopped taking on Contractors via LTD companies. We decided as a organisation we didn’t want to be seen to circumvent the IR35 rules, so it’s either FTC’s or nothing. And we’ve planned for loosing some folks, but it’s for them to decide.. they’ve had long enough warning about it.

What does annoy me (and others in the IT world) is that the MoJ and other Government bodies are still pushing out contracts outside of IR35.

Which is frankly typical Tory double standards.

Same feeling I have: that I can try as hard as I can but it’ll still make next to f-all difference. But I now also feel that I’ve got to at least try – if everyone else did the same then perhaps we’d make a bigger difference collectively.

This is pretty much how I see it as well.

Laudable as those feelings are, and I’d suggest most feel the same way.

There are a lot of people who do not feel the same and thats their prerogative. Nothing you say on an internet forum makes the slightest bit of difference to them, mainly because they aren’t on here and they’d not care what you said.

We live in a world of new political order, you really do not have a voice or a voice you think you have makes little impact to the wider audience.

Better get used to it, because people voted for it.

And what they decide to drive really isn’t anyones business but their own.

the country has just elected a climate change denier as PM and you wonder why SUV is the best selling car ?

    Absolutely !

    Good point well made.

You voted for a government who drive around London in v8 Jags that rarely break 15mph. That have something like 120 RangRongers for special duties, yea the v8 ones. The diplomatic service has 300+ cars on its books that don’t pay the congestion zone charge, not Dart Charge nor are included in ULEZ.

    And you moan about SUV’s.

The science says that SUV’s are the second leading rise in emissions and have totally negated all emissions saved from EV’s

What if you drive an EV SUV?

A lot of the arguments are based around jealousy… sort of “whaaaawhaaa, luk wot dey got, wy ant I got wun”

I’ve got an Altium and an old Z5c. Both have SRAM Red on them, old cool mechanical and reliable. Both kitted out with MavM40C’s. Stem & Bars are both Parlees Aero, so too seat post.

I like Parlee, I bought my first (the Z5) back in 2010 and it’s still brilliant. The Altium was new in 2016, and is a teeny bit heavier but quicker and stiffer in a straight line. The Z5 is set up as a climbers bike and the Altium as a Classics 1-day’er.
Can’t fault the build quality on either, the Z5 has had a hard life bouncing up and down Northern Italian lumps and other than regular maintenance it’s been flawless.

The Altium has been ace, mostly South Downs flint/grit covered with the occasional long distance efforts run by my club. It’s a bit harsher, stiffer, hard to compare because I’ve not ridden “aero” bikes much, but it’s less aero more fast classics bike.

I’ve got a Cervelo R5c too, that’s a weight weeny setup with same Red and Mav as the others.

I have thought over the years to get rid of the Z5. I bought the R5c to replace it, but the bikes are lovely so it’s still with me.

You may get some detractors about the cost, but that’s their problem not yours. Buy and ride what you like IMO.

Oh I think we all know how this will play out.

It’ll now have a load of ‘investment’ in that it’ll be given loads of government funding

Then once its had stacks of taxpayers money thrown at it, it’ll be handed back to one of their mates a suitable private sector operator, probably with a big fat subsidy

    Corporate welfare, innit?

This is how I see it.

Don’t forget the conservatives canned the idea of East Coast Mainline electrification. So you can thank them for a total lack of investment in infrastructure whilst securing shareholder returns and confidence.

dangourbrain nailed 90% of what I was going to post, so thank for saving me the effort. Pretty much spot on.

Apart from all those Brexiteer supporters who will now claim “taking back control” actually means re-nationalising the rail network… because British Rail as was, was a real success story wasn’t it.
