    Close but not quite….

In most engine starts on airliners the air from the APU (or the other engine) starts an engine by driving a starter air turbine which is connected to the HP (high pressure) shaft by a series of shafts and gears (ie the air from the APU is not fed into the core engine itself). Also 'compressor turbine' is not a correct term – a compressor is upstream of the combustor and is there to compress air, a turbine is downstream of a comobuster and is there to extract energy to drive either the compressor, a propeller or a fan.

    @ Nobeerinthefridge

8-10 stage is probably about right for a pratt or GE engine. For RR (3 shaft) it is typically IP8 for higher power conditions, and HP3 (via a precooler) for lower power conditions – at flight idle IP8 would be too low a pressure for example….

Exceptions to all of the above are the GEnX and Trent 1000 – both engines can be started electrically via a pair of VFSGs (variable frequency starter generators). These take electrical power from APU. They are also used to power compressors to supply air to the cabin, avoiding the need to do it by bleeding air from the engines….

BoCW – it's quite a big tent (well by our standards anyway!)!

It has two 'double rooms', we unzip the partition between the two and the travel cot straddles the join. We can then sleep either side of him so either person can get to him without having to disturb the other!

Our little fella in a vango nitestar at 6 months (camping in peaks in late september):

    and now at 18 months:

He always gets on really well with it, and never ends up too far out of it despite being a bit of a wriggler!

He sometimes uses a vango nitestar 300XL too:

Twice in 2000. First was the Etape du Tour.

It was quite hard – especially after 100 miles and several 1000m of climbing already!

Even though I was race fit I still weighed around 90kg -I thought 39 x 27 would be a low enough gear – how wrong I was!!!!!!!

Really looking forward to today's stage!

It took off from Fairford and then flew to Cosford and back before doing its display at RIAT. Are you somewhere between fairford and Cosford?

I have a brand new and unused steel freehub body (with springs and bearings) for pro II if anyone’s interested.

I bought it to use on my Hope Pro 3 wheels (to fix the problem discussed here….) but the Pro 3s use different bearings and different axle dia so it won’t fit!

    £42 posted if anyone’s interested?

Oh come on chaps. All these claims about him having passed so many tests without a positive – what a joke….

What about people like millar, basso, ulrich, etc – they all passed many a test without a positive and yet later have been proven to be cheats. Millar was tested when he won the world TT championship – he passed the test but later openly admitted to EPO use!! Prior to the 98 TDF everyone was up to the eyeballs on stuff – they all got through the tests.

So given that Lance beat all these people who have later been shown to have been on PEDS, and given how much of a difference they make – then he really must be superhuman!!

What about the recent tests of his stored 1999 urine samples for EPO – they came back positive (EPO test not available 1999). There is still some urine left, he has been offered the chance to have it re-tested again at a facility of his choice, but he has declined….

Generally i tighten them up snug then a bit more and havent had any issues with them working loose, distorting or the likes. 20-25Nm seems a bit tight in my opinion

20-25Nm is not that tight at all – XTR BB installation instructions state 35-50Nm….

I had the same issue with hope – spacers squidging out at a stupidly low torque so I immediately swapped them out for some metal shimano ones (don’t think shimano come with metal anymore – plastic too now but a bit more manly than shimano!)

    Hope this helps!

I had a bad experience with mine.

Installed it (using correct tools for fork and headtube), frame has been faced. It would always tend to bind a bit when bars were turned past 45 degrees. I had to swap the crown race between forks – i used a plastic drift to remove the crown race (carefully), on the first ride out the headset would either have play or if I tightened it to stop this it would be binding. On examination it was obvious the crown race was bent somewhat, and thus acting like a spring (ie if you just take up play ins system it would still flex so you do get loose headset feel when riding, if you tighten enough to stop this you are having to bend it flat again so headset will bind).

I put this down to the fact that the crown race it fairly thin Aluminium to save weight (chris king etc all steel).

I replaced it with chris king and have had no probs at all – no binding or play, smooth as silk.

Based on the above would not recommend.

I’ve been privy to sections of the report for a while now. Somewhere in there it reports that at least two crew members were still alive (but likely unconscious) before they hit the water.

    Sad, horribly, terribly sad

Daffy – I think you’re confusing it with the challenger accident – the crew of columbia died within a couple of minutes of the start of the event…..

You can download the full 400 page report here:
