I had my surgery nearly a year ago, L4/L5 microdiscectomy. Getting fit before hand is a great idea. It will aid your recovery. I was back on the bike after a few months. It will be difficult to start with, but just take it easy. I was back at work far too soon. Before my op, I only heard good things about it, then afterwards, only people not getting it done because of the risks. It worked for me, I was on a lot of tablets for 4 years, I got off them as quick as I could. Good luck with it mate. You might have some quite dark days, I did, but it does get better, try not to much back though. I did and came off and gashed my leg, was off the bike for another month, so be patient and it will be fine.

Will they fit on my Orange 5? I was thinking of something standalone, so I didn’t have to faff about too much when I do go riding.

The Pentland Hills are only 15 minutes drive away. I go up there one or two nights a week. Seen a couple of Fat Bikes up there too. That]s if you like to ride something bumpy.

I zip tie some old inner tube to my top tube and fuse the velcro strap that came with the battery. This stops the better from moving about too much and does not scratch the frame either. Although I have been thinking about getting a longer cable and just having the battery in my camel bak.

What size could I get away with using a medium cage with a 36-11 cassette?

    bigbadbob

I would be running a normal box standard SLX cassette, whatever that range is.

honeybadgerx – not sure but, that would be a good idea, unless it was hundreds of pounds.

Thanks for your comments qtip and clubber, whatever they were.
Should I get a medium or a long cage rear mech then?

Apparently they have sorted all the legals out and can enforce them now, and the bloody are.
My mate got a fine at the weekend, only because the machine would not take his card, he left a note on the windscreen and everything, but they still issued the fine. He is going to appeal though.

How was last years? I was put off with too much happening all on the same weekend, the downhill, the Enduro and the XC. Was it a real strammash or was it OK? What was the parking like? Was there the year before when it was just the XC and it was great, apart from the heat. Being a Yorkshireman living in Scotland the price seems quite reasonable next year though.

Has anyone mentioned ‘shaved eyebrows’ yet! Very good series. Educating Essex will not be the same, not going to bother watching that. Far far too down south…

Ride on your own, have a couple of near misses, and you will not LOVE IT so much…

but… other nights, you will love it. I have to ride on my own 🙁 my usual riding buddies don’t want to night ride, so I have a mixed bag of good and scary bad night rides, I saw a badger last night. Watch out for owls riding right next to you or right in front of you.
Have fun though, beats sitting on the couch watching rubbish on the TV.

I just bought one last week, got it on for 2 rides, Only complaint is the 60A compound, slightly slips out on stuff that my normal Ardent didn’t, but saying that, it looks a lot tougher than my normal one. I feel very safe with this taking it to Spain next week. I run tubes by the way.

I was on holiday with the family recently, and looking around at the various families, found out that we were one of the youngest couples (44 and 49) with the oldest kids (15 and 18). So glad we had the kids when we did, seeing the older mums and dads trying to cope and running round after the kids was great fun. My son and I have had years of biking together and now he is old enough, he can buy the drinks after our rides too. Result.
Being a Dad is brilliant (probably) at any age, but my kids are old enough and I am young enough to do loads of things together.
How old will you be when he asks you to show him how to do ‘Manuals’ or that 4 foot drop-off. Just saying.
Enjoy them though, whatever age you are and what age they are too.

    6′ 2″
    13 stone
Normal size legs but long back. Waiting for surgery on my back for slipped disk, but still riding plenty.
I have found over the years that more and more people are getting taller. There used to be a time that I would be the only tall person on the street, now there are lots more than there were.
Anything over 6’2″ is freakish though.

You would be amazed at how many people at work know someone who has got spare cycling stuff and have given it to me. I have a ‘Bike Box’ which is a secret money haud, well I have 2, just in case my wife finds one. If I do tell my wife how much stuff is, it is never the correct price, usually half, if not more off the real price. A lot of stuff gets delivered to work and I smuggle it into the house or shed. I have cycled to work before and fitted new parts to it at lunch time and cycled home with the new stuff on the bike.
Sorry but that is how it is for me, my wife hates the bike.

    Hate the little buggers.

I lightly spray my forks with GT85 and then give them a light wipe off. Been doing this with my 1998 Boxxers and they are still working fine, so may not be too bad for them.

Glad to hear that some new folk will try the buff thing. I could not believe it worked well for me, and so now will always use one.

No one has got back to me with the glasses though. It was before the road section, that is where he noticed they had gone. 🙁 Still living in hope though.

It would have been so funny if the BBC were on strike and missed the whole thing. We may have got some peace then.

I am just waiting for one of the stupid folk running alongside the riders to take out the lead man big style in front of millions of TV viewers and see what Le Tour does about it then, if they can. Must be very frustrating for the riders. Saying that the support for Le Tour is great, I think it was in Lyon the other day, I had to turn down the volume of the TV because the crowd was so loud. Have we had a dog in the road yet, or is that one still to come…

Got mine the other day, and it works fine, just be careful loading the bike onto it.

There all at the beach or park, where they can make tonnes of cash (with the prices they charge) without using up petrol money. So no need to trawl round the streets looking for meagre pickings any more. Kerching big style.
