Thanks Stoner, will spend tomorrow reading your blog whilst pretending to work!

And while you are in the mood for answering my numpty questions, what sort of pace do you aim for whilst touring at about 100 miles pr day?

Sorry, if I didn’t make it clear. It is 100 miles per day for 5 days.

I’m asking because my Langster is my commute bike that does 10 flat miles a day normally. I’ve never thought about doing real miles on it? Hence the worry about the ratio.

Thanks everyone, I’ll try to get a bar and saddle bag fitted. Seems like that will be best.

Stunning! One of the best things I have seen on web for quite some time.

Shame that the clip was cut though, would like to have seen it play out.

I use a Suunto Vector[/url] in Black/Orange for every day use. I guess you can get something cheaper but I’m happy with it.

    Strato. The reasons I am considering one;

Back in the day (I’m 50 now) I didn’t pass my bike test. i’m a biker at heart, and owned lots of big powerful bikes but none ridden legally. I’m embarrassed to say.

So, given the options are to stay as I am, in a convertible, do a direct access course and buy a bike, or buy a quad. Bearing in mind I am not in to riding quickly, and I like the idea of cheap running costs I thought about a road biased quad ………..

5thE …………. Have you looked at he latest quads? I agree they were once the preferred transport for lonely sheep herders but things have moved on ………. have you?

Tron, back in the day, maybe.

5th E, not sure what you mean?

    CFH, judgemental as normal.

Strato, I explained in my post why, well I thought i had.

David T, anything meaningful to contribute?

    Thanks Mattmbk.

Some great pics and stories, keep them coming.

I’m still unsure of what to get or where to go but i am certain that I have to get away somewhere.

    Thanks again,

The reason I was put off using hydraulic discs is just that if I was unfortunate enough to get a mechanical problem with them the chances of finding parts for old Hayes discs are probably next-to-none. Whereas cables, blocks, etc you can buy almost anywhere.

There really are some great bikes there, can’t wait to get started.

Anyone care to give an idea of what would they would pack for 1 weeks credit card touring?

Oh and keep the bike pics coming. And if anyone has something with a 54 cm top tube for sale ………..

Thanks guys, must say i am drawn more to a road bike style tourer just because of the lower position and more hand positions.

Though I do have an old Canondale mtb not doing much at all, I’m put of using that though as it has hydraulic disc brakes.

Sorry to hear of this Steve. Life can seem pretty unfair at times.

That said, as Drac said, concentrate on your wife and daughter (I know you will). Bikes are just bikes, nothing more, easily replaced if you want to.

Don’t lose your faith in humanity, there are lots of good people out there and a few real sh*ts, much like this place really.

Sue W, I’m sure I can come up with some nice routes for you. Mail me on ianwarnesatgmaildotcom with an idea of distances etc

    Do you have a Garmin?

Steve – Good to hear from you, how are you? (mail me if you prefer) Getting out on the CX bike much? I do love my Storck, especially on days like this! You’re right Norfolk does have some great beaches, from my house heading Nth or East it’s about 20 miles to the coast and 30 if heading Sth so plenty of scope for seaside cafe stops. Unfortunately however good the beaches are, it is sadly lacking in hills!

TurnerGuy – “was the singletrack good?” ???? You’ve lost me, sorry.

    Hi Steve,

I still race, commute and do silly miles on my Empella. Cheap as chips to get a frame and forks ………..

I bought mine using my wife’s student discount. I think it was a saving between 15 & 20%.

At the time (12 months ago) you had to prove you were a student by providing a university email address.

    Interesting replies, thank you.

“Wildlife” for me means animals or birds shot at distance rather than magnifying bugs! ;0)

I shall take myself off to Warehouse Express and take a look at the suggested lenses. I must admit I am quite tempted by the Canon 70-200 but I’m slightly concerned I will miss not having a 300 in my bag.

I’ve been on it three weeks and shifted 4kg’s, which I am very pleased with. I only wanted to lose 5kg’s in total so this as been a really effective and fast way of reducing body fat %age. Thank you iDave.

If you feel like you would like to lose a few pounds (or more), and it seems like there are plenty on here who do, why not give it a go for 3 weeks? What’s the worst that can happen??

Aside from the weight loss I’ve actually really enjoyed thinking about my diet and what I put in my body. I’ve learnt a lot of new recipes (thanks to all who have contributed!) and realised that with a bit of prep it’s actually not difficult to cut out bland sarnies in the lunch box everyday.

It was my “rest day” yesterday, I arrived back from a 150k ride to find the table spread with buffet food. I think I over did it a bit. Still feeling stuffed now and I’m actually looking forward to 6 days of healthy eating!

Disclaimer. I have never met iDave but I would happily buy him a beer red wine if we ever did meet!
