    chaps, good point.

The calipers are post mount, so to use the existing 185mm rotor and mount to a post mount fork, I only need one of these?

    Chris / Smudge,

Just so happens that took mate out for first night ride last night and he now wants his own light.

If it’s a light unit and Smudge battery/charger combo then I’ll have one on his behalf – on the assumption that we ain’t talking silly money here.

Chris – don’t suppose you have a triple 35mm xm-l and optic spare?

    Guess what I’m really asking…

Mate does some online selling of motorbike and car bolts, etc after engaging with the major factories in Taiwan and China who supply same to some on line folks who sell bike stuff. Steel, Alu and TI.

As he has lower overheads the model is that prices would be lower than is the norm for such stuff.

However, in order to develop an appropriate product range, he is curious about what would be consumed by bike folks.

I’ve got chainring bolts, rotor bolts, caliper mount bolts and stem bolts from him in Ti. But, I may not be representative of the overall consuming population.

Strength of steel but weight of alu? Does not corrode to same extent, etc.

    Trout,

    Thanks.

Yep HID can is 35mm, I have 2 types of robust heatsinks machined, a bflex and also 14.8v…..

    This combo work?

I’m not going to defend it 100% as it is not 100% perfect in all respects I would like. However, in comparison to many places in the UK I would suggest that it is not a bad place to live.

Always makes me chuckle when I watch some of the reality cop type shows on the telly – would definately not want to visit anywhere in the NW of England, Lincolnshire, etc, etc.

Flying Ox – appreciate usage of the word ‘some’….just as ‘some’ English football fans will riot if their team does not win, same as ‘some’ folks with a certain view on religion will seek out other religions to wreak damage, same as ‘some’ who live on council estates will be thieving chavs.

I’m sure we have all had negative experiences in many locations around the world, but does that make them bad places and their residents terrible – probably not.

Whilst it may not have the operatic opportunities as the grander cities of the UK, TBH it’s not too bad a place to live at the moment. However this could all change if those hydrocarbons dry up and it becomes like any other post industrial wasteland in the UK.

BBSB – an interesting personal view indeed.

I’m sure a lot of folks would take exception to your description of the fine Aberdonians and equally welcomed residents from other parts of the world.

I’m sitting here looking at the local hills (with their trails), it’s currently sunny, we have relatively robust employment and above average incomes, don’t see too much wrong with the place TBH.

Troutie, sounds like a good plan. Particularly interested in a nice little single. Happy to test up here….

Silly idea……900 kit ability to be fitted into a Lumi halogen housing?

FYI, I have a lumi HID can too….with a choice of 2 ‘robust’ machined heatsinks. Expect a parcel soon….

Think originally retailed at £850 tops.

Like I say, decent gonad clearance, but wondered if the only thing that varied by size was the top-tube length

I have a 29″ inside leg and whatever size I tried, any more height would have been an issue ;-)

If anyone could point me to where on the frame I would find size that would be excellent or even better point me in the direction of diagram with dimensions

    Thanks all.

I sense that what may have happened was that the verbal “We’ll pay you x per hour and you will work x hrs per work when you want to – within reason” was actually “We’ll pay you x per hour and you will work as and when we require you to which may not actually be a minimum number of hours”.

And by asking for known annual salary, hours, vacation, etc on the doc offer perhaps became an issue – otherwise why not mention the hard requirement for a start date all week and make it clear during interview and subsequent communications. It was all “Yes we are very flexible with start date”.

Email has been sent to both recruiter and potential employer.

    Walk away time.

Of course said potential employer may have been playing one candidate off against another too…..

You rascal! Nice. Presume 14.8v pack would work?

Yes thanks – got your email and you will receive some stuff in the post – just tidying up some heatsinks with mate who has machine shop. Allow 35mm XPE triples to be used in halogen cans…..

So, how does the triple xm-l measure up against my 7-Up?

Discount on Rolex sport models…mmmm….guess depends what you class there.

Definately know just short of 20% lower than AD prices for an Air King obtained.

Agree subs and SD’s could be an issue, but always something to be got if you go the right route.

    JB,

Had pretty positive experience with Watchfinder.co.uk if you must get the brand name.

Wife got Air King from them at price which was much more competitive than local AD – who cannot discount.

You may also wish to consider Tudor – Rolex second brand. Same cases, but use ETA movements rather than in-house.

    http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Tudor/Classic-Collection-Watches/79190-c12394-watch.aspx

Above a bit pricey in ‘though.

TBH if you can get a used Rolex with original sales invoice, boxes, etc then you’ll be fine. Worst case Rolex UK do a fantastic re-furb, but they can be handled easily by a lot of others in the UK.

Simply they are a classic design, which in stainless only is timeless (no pun…) and are a sound investment to boot.

    Omega?

Reckon you could get a sweet discount off these:

    http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/SearchResults.aspx?q=*%3a*&f_brand=Omega&f_parentseries=Planet-Ocean

Or if you want to be noticed:

    http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/SearchResults.aspx?f_brand=Omega&q=*%3a*&f_parentseries=Seamaster-Ploprof

    Seamaster…got some from late 40’s to mid-00’s.

I’d say go for the Precista PRS-14 and pocket a chunk of change.

Homage to classic SM300 and believe the correct Omega bracelet would fit straight on. However nice on retro rubber.

I like the majority of my Omega’s (got a 60’s Constellation which was my late grandpas – understated style), but unless you really want the ‘name’ you will get better value elsewhere.

Investment – as previous post – get stainless sports Rolex. Sea Dweller, Sub or GMT.

So, anyone care to sell me a decent rear wheel with Hope hub.

Alternatively, looking at Superstar SS specific rear wheel now…..anyone any experience of the Evo Pro 320-4 SS specific rear hub?

    Passat…

    Pollen filter seal.

Foam which rots letting water down…see vents under front seats….potentially water closer to back.

VW apparently do not sell a new seal (under a tenner), only a replacement unit (about £150).

If it is this, get new filter and decent silicon sealer…job done.

Secure nuclear to generate all our electricity. Waste…big challenge.

Get serious about encouraging some countries to try and start reducing their consumption – price can definately be an effective way of doing this – if said price is actually market price. However only means what we have will last a bit longer…. How much is there really left in the middle east?

Serious investment in real alternatives….but so long as relatively cheap for consumers and profitable for producers don’t see how this cycle can be broken.

    Thanks all – much appreciated.

Appears that one of our LBS’s did have some, so now sorted.

TBH I find my wifes 1.5dci Qashqai surprisingly ok in the snow…up to a point.

However, it does have 4 Nokian winter grips on it….and I also recognise that it is only a Golf sized car with the benefit of some more ground clearance so drive accordingly.

I’d rather have it in this weather than the X5 with 20″ wheels and summer biased tyres. I also could not afford nor justify an X5….

As a kid, an old guy near us had a collection of 60’s Alfa’s – Guila Ti, GT Junior, etc. Wanted one since.

However, string of other stuff been and gone over the years. Fav Mk2 Honda CRX or the Mk2 Golf GTI

Wife has a decent enough car so picked up a 7 year old 147 1.6 TS with 30k miles for a song for myself about 18mths ago. However, first job I did was take it to the nearest Alfa specialist – CP Garage in Dundee – for timing belt, tensioner and water pump change. Insurance for the future.

Get one with a decent specialist history, be prepared to service when it should and you’ll probably be fine.

What has mine needed? Front tyres, new front pipe (the bit with the 2 cats…) and just the usual service stuff.

Do I trust it? Probably not….

Does it drive well? Not really…drives just like any other family hatch of it’s size but probably squeaks a bit more….

Why? Simple, I cannot afford one of these:

    http://www.dep-o.co.uk/page403.asp

Plus the offset front number plate….

Really, really annoys me too….surely not too much to ask?

Was doing our usual night ride the other Friday – one of the bits is a push (not fit enough to ride it yet…) up a path in FC. We noted the path was very chewed up – presumed by FC vehicles. Imagine our surprise to find a Toyota Landcruiser slightly off the path in the trees – mud on tyres still wet…

We had a look – numberplates were removed and the tax disc was for a Vauxhall. Locked so only presume they ran out of fuel during a slightly naughty “Lets Offroad!!!”.

No sign of anyone until we headed further along our chosen route…..and were met with disgarded sweet wrappers, and some soft drinks bottles…just chucked down as they walked.

Unfortunately we did not bump into anyone – guess the Trout 7-Up plus various others in a normally pitch dark slightly out of the way place potentially put the wind up the ‘owners’….as did the quickly cobbled together song of “We are the brokeback mountain bikers……” accompanied with some strangely animal yelps, etc…..

Another rant – the lazy f’ers who park in the car-park of fast-food places after using the drive-through then simply open their doors and leave their sh1t lying.

Folks, some interesting replies for sure – what a diverse bunch.

Of course, who is to say that the Hope caliper is perfectly true/flat either.

I can now see (to a point) benefits of facing, but also now aware that the variance in manufacturing might mean that shim(s) of differing thicknesses will still be required anyways.

Answer – stop being picky, try it with shims first then if outcome not satisfactory then try facing. To be fair, I omitted to say that the guy in the second shop said just this….

Yep, up here already a few weeks of it being pretty dark by 2000hrs.

Growing group of us are venturing out, so guidance around lighting options are going down well. DX are getting a few orders for MCE & P7 torches at the mo.

I’m currently (no pun…) running an old Trout quad on the bars and my Ay-Ups on the helmet.

Running the Trout quad v Magicshine on the bars – the quad just snatches it. However when my mate sticks on my MCE torch it is certainly brighter than the Ay-Ups. But….I also have the dinky 3hr Ay-Up battery pack with switch mounted to my helmet so swings and roundabouts.

The surprise package is my mates Lumi halogen which Trout converted using 20m triple Cree, etc last year. It’s got great output, is simple and although using the most basic driver, does not actually suffer from heat – my mate does switch it off if not moving for any length of time.

The 7-Up will be unleashed on Saturday night where we’re going a bit further afield and where it is a bit more technical. I’ll make sure to ride at the back ;-)

Surf – how did your comparison Luminous v Trout work out? Did I miss it?

    benz
    Free Member

VFM? You’d get a DXmagicshine and decent torch (for helmet mount or backup), batteries and mount for under £100.

DX appear to be pretty decent in terms of returns, etc.

Plenty of folks on here will sell a decent light set – Troutie, Luminous, Four4th, etc – guess it depends how much you want to spend.

Although I have a Trout 7-Up, the Four4th look pretty good value.

Dx if you want to spend under £100, any of the folks above it you don’t.
