    Shining Through. However, that’s probably a good thing.

    MOABs conversation sounds like one of mine years ago when you could visit their office and chat with a human across a desk. I questioned my £2K bill and they did the maths in front of me, got to within £250 of their own figure and said “thats close enough”. As it meant me paying them even more I said that “close enough, is not good enough”. They seem surprised at my attitude. Eventually the bill was reduced by about £500, but as the complaints process had taken me past a deadline I had to pay in full and could not pay via PAYE even though we spent the extra time correcting their error.

    Try calling the number on this page https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/tax-credits-enquiries

    I called them last Thursday and got through to a human in 27 minutes. According to google 11am on Thursday is one of the best times to call them.

    Last 12 months my return is less than 3% which is close to the modal average that Martin Lewis talks about. I have started taking some out to put it to better use.

    The weekend update from Phillip O’Brian is a review of the year so far and includes a telling map of the front lines on January the 1st 2024 and late September 2024.

    Maps Jan to Oct 2024

    All that bloodshed for (almost) nothing.

    Forbidden Diary – A true WW2 prison survival story – Slightly melodramatic at times, but a great listen

    S-Town; Weird, but fascinating – A bit sweary at times so headphones required.

    Girlfiends; Doctor. Pilot. Murderer? – Based on actual recordings of the main characters involved. Hooked me quickly despite the intrusive Ads (you can fast forward if you are not driving) and ‘recaps’

    Low fees – Vanguard is the popular answer, but there are other options such as HSBC (assuming you are UK based)

    Maybe another important ‘kick-back’ by Ukraine; Ukraine Strikes Deep: Morozovsk Airfield Burns.

    It’s so *Bleeping* *Bleep* that this war is still ongoing, but stuff like this gives me some hope that Ukraine can prevent what sometimes seems inevitable.

    Nothing again. It’s no longer surprising after about 12 months of a full holding returning about 2% I started gradually moving the money in to better places. I will just retain a small holding at the end as it is a good short term home for cash and you never know

    This is from the CAB site I posted above;

    Top tips

    • before complaining to your insurer, check your policy to make sure you have a right to complain
    • you must first complain to your insurer using their internal complaints process
    • keep copies of all correspondence in case you need to take your complaint further
    • keep all receipts and send copies unless you’re asked to provide the originals.

    Other than an intense distrust of the whole insurance industry I don’t have any direct advise, but being ‘fobbed off’ at the start of a claim seems standard  practise. Did they ask any questions about your relatives when you booked the policy? Can you see any ‘exclusions’ in the T&C’s (the excclusions always seem easier to check first rathe than trying to read the whole policy).

    CAB advise that you complain to the travel Insurance company first and then escalate to the FOS. – This is the stage I am at :-(

    I couldn’t login on my laptop yesterday (MacBook using Chrome and safari). It rejected my password and the reset password email link did not work. I saw your post from a few days ago saying this was fixed

    Strangely I can login this morning so can’t retest the password reset for fear of not being able to login again

    I work one day a week in a supermarket (not on the security detail). The training we are given includes guidelines on how to reduce theft.

    After the heavy instructions about not putting your self in a situation where you are frightened or feel you may come to harm, one of the biggest things they promote is to let people know you have seen them. Even just standing watching from the other end of the isle might put someone off without putting your self at risk.

    Sounds to me like they may have been letting you know he was there as he had seen you do something he was unsure about.

    You don’t actually say if your tax code has changed. Have a look on the last few payslips as it should be shown on all of them. If it has changed has the number gone up or down? Check the HMRC site for more details.

    He would’t stay in the hotel room allocated as it was room 58 and 5+8 = 13 which is unlucky. I spent a whole day sorting the IT/cabling in the hotel to provide decent internet to his new room. He shook my hand to say thanks and there was a tiny parcel of paper left in my palm which unfolded to a £20 note. Seemed like a nice chap!

    @sturdylad I have a session, but have some gripes;

    -You can’t swap the battery which only lasts about 90 mins on max FPS/Image size (it will take memory cards that can take over 2 hours of video at this quality so this seems like an own goal)

    -The lack of large screen makes some features difficult to use EG I use an old Faux Go-Pro to reformat the cards or to delete individual files as I can see what they are on the screen before I delete them.

    -It looks like the original Go-Pro App has been discontinued on the Apple Store which makes setup/changes (including time/date) very difficult!

    NB – I do not use it much any more so the last point may her been resolved

    I find the Phillips P. OBrien sub stack linked earlier in the thread very good for less “headline grabbing” commentary. His view is that while Russia is a making gains, in some cases it is as little as 500m in two weeks it is a desperate push to make progress before the American aid arrives and levels the playing field again

    I would be cautious if you literally mean ‘cash’ on collection. FYI there are supposedly more forged £50 notes in circulation than any other denomination and, if you are like me, it’s probably years since you saw a real one so you might not spot a fake.

    https://www.trackdays.co.uk/driving-experience/lamborghini/

    I just typed a reply and tried to add this as a link, but the link button was not available on my phone.

    Any way; other companies/venues are available. Find one that suits, take the family to watch and have a pub lunch on the way home. Lamborghini + family time sounds good to me.

    If you think that’s bad, wait until you find out how much it’s going to be to park the car at the ferry terminal for the day
.

    That said it’s a nice idea. There is a very child friendly cycle trail from Yarmouth to freshwater that is hard packed gravel for lots of its length. You just need to do a short about of road work at each end. There is also a cafe at the freshwater and another down a slight detour just outside Yarmouth.

    Apparently quite a lot of it was already at staging areas in Germany and Poland so by the time a type this there’s a fair chance the first shipments will already be inside Ukraine.

    Some of it has already been used according to the BBC

    In advance, read through the official Government page on redundancy; https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights

    Run your details through the calculator to see what the legal minimum payment would be; https://www.gov.uk/calculate-your-redundancy-pay

    Have a look at the ACAS website; https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy

    As an American company they may try and run the whole thing based on American employment rights. If they break any UK rules/laws then you will probably end up going down the route of a settlement agreement. This is where ACAS can be a big help, but you need to register any potential ‘complaint’ within 3 months. Don’t be scared to call them for free advice and register your potential complaint based on what they say.

    Many employment solicitors offer 1/2 hour free phone consultation if you feel you are drowning in detail once you have heard what your employer has to say.

    MOST IMPORTANTLY; Don’t agree to anything in the initial meeting/consultation. Listen to what your company  have to say, take any paperwork they offer and go home to do your homework.

    @zilog6128 – Account was created while I was recovering from an (incredibly slow, mellow, benign on a ‘slight slope’) MTB crash and had multiple broken bones. The bent bit comes from the fact that my back is genetically ‘all over the show’

    @Tracey
    – that’s for the PMs for now as the repatriation is ongoing and I don’t know how the rest is going to pan out
. Will ping some details later today
