Had a 5 and now have one of these http://www.transitionbikes.com/Bikes_Covert.cfmAdmittedly my 5 was an 08 version and this knocks the socks off it big time.
Thanks for that link, that covert does look nice; now where did I leave that spare £1300??
The Orange looks nice too.
bellerophonFree MemberIF it's just your shins, from pedal impact, you're worried about then I have heard of people using football shin pads.. not much good for knee protection though.
bellerophonFree MemberBell rophynol I was talking to pete55 innit.
 ha ha I never even noticed he had a crud catcher on his bike, oh well…
bellerophonFree MemberIt's the crudguard that completes the look
tis good init  in my defence I didn't get the crud catcher with it, so it's not actually there, I nabbed the photo from a shop…
also the seat isn't too white either now, didn't really think it was a great colour for a seat
bellerophonFree MemberWow, those are very white bikes, I have one of these..
MOD: image removed due to malware
which has white rims and white forks
bellerophonFree MemberBlimey, that takes me back, I used to work for DEC. Have to say I have a soft spot for VMS, proper clustering
bellerophonFree Memberwhen you're on holiday with the family and visit a bike shop in every town you stop at and buy stuff?
I mean what else would you buy as a souvenier from holland, belgium, france and south africa?
bellerophonFree Member22-36 has worked okay for me in the past – should be fine. If you’re a bit worried I suppose you could change the 22 for a 24.

bellerophonFree MemberRotating your hands\dropping your wrists so your knuckles come back towards you helps you drop your elbows, helps when pulling on the bars as you’re pulling horizontally back towards you rather than up.
bellerophonFree MemberI too like the black, if the push came the shove I’d say I prefer it to the red – although I think Traquair and Kirry are both better.
I’m interested in what bits of the red people think are more technical than the black?
bellerophonFree MemberHow about some thing like this http://www.marin.co.uk/2009/bikedetail.php?ModNo=3963-1F I’m currently using on older Marin Highway One commuting twice a week 17miles each way and am finding it superb. It’s not as full on a true racer (I did the same commute on a Bianchi reparto corsa bike) but brilliant for this and getting fit.
Just a thought..
bellerophonFree MemberI believe http://www.fisheroutdoor.co.uk are the uk distributors…
bellerophonFree MemberZX12R.
Owned it for a week, gave it back, repurchased my old ZZR11.For me a ZX9, took a few months but changed it for an R1 – which is one bike I regret selling, in fact I’m hoping to get another one, not a new one but 99/01/02 model…
bellerophonFree MemberThe using the travel once per ride thing was kinda how we used to setup MX suspension, we were looking to bottom out on the biggest bump on the track, its a valid guidline, but better for something you do laps and laps of the same course
Cheers, tinsy; I’ve haven’t setup my suspension based on that statement for the type of riding I do and what you say that makes absolute sense and confirms what I thought. I can see situations in mtbing (e.g. DH) where you might use it, but for me I don’t think it applies.
For me sag and rebound are what I focus on. If I have the rebound too fast it feels like I’m being pinged off the bike, but maybe I can correct that by better body postioning….
bellerophonFree Member….. You should be aiming to use all the travel once per ride or so.
I’ve always wondered about this statement… as I may do a ride that doesn’t require full travel, am I supposed to set up the suspension so soft just to achieve it…
lets face it you can only have the bike setup perfectly for one bump at acertain speed,, for everything else it’s a comparmise it’s up to you what you set up for,,
the normal stuff you ride over,,,,, or the worst stuff you are going to ride overAnd the above statement sums it up really.
bellerophonFree MemberCountZero, some good points there and it looks like SKF have a product that would change my view. My experience is based on a friend who went through 3 raceface BBs under warranty until it was replaced with the signature one you have at this point he was happy – mind you the signature was £80 then – whereas even the cheaper shimano sq taper bbs were outlasting the £45 isis bbs.
bellerophonFree MemberGiven this choice I’d go square taper and with Shimano. If you don’t have a BB tool then you’ll need one of those.
Bez beat me to it and said it better….

bellerophonFree MemberBellerophon,
I got the frame and forks offof some very nice people on here.
The rest;
Tech M4s (went on Intense 5.5) sdwapped with previous M4s
XT shifters & mechs
XT Chainset (went on intense)swapped with SLX
Hoops with 5.1s
Thomson stem and post
RF Atlas bars
Fizik gobiBloomin nice spec, do you have an idea as to how much it weighs?
Unfortunately there’s no orange frames left in my size, new stock arriving later in the year; so it’s plan B, buy an off the shelf bike – most likely a Genesis Abyss – and then when the frames are back in stock transfer them over…..
cheers
bellerophonFree MemberHi Backhander,
Sorry to ask again, but would you spill the beans on cost\spec?
Cheers,
bellerophonFree Membervery nice….
backhander, can I ask how much the build was? Our c2w scheme voucher will be £1000, so was thinking of buying a frame and then getting all the components from a shop, trouble is I’m not sure I can get the components in under £1000
Cheers,
bellerophonFree MemberLike the weed lined up with the tyre logo in pic 2..
Nice bikes..
bellerophonFree MemberGreat to be back to eh??
Yep, sorta looking forward to my next ride, I say sorta as it’ll be the first after THE SNIP!!! !!
bellerophonFree Memberany reason it has to be steel? as the Boardman Pro for £1K would be high on my list if you want a light (24lb) fast good bike, but it is Al.
I suppose quite simply because I haven’t had a steel bike and quite fancy one, bit like I’d rather have a snazzy colour, over the years my bikes have been silver, cream, matt black, graphite and white.
Apart from not being steel boardman bikes aren’t an option on our b2w scheme as I think they’re only available from Halfords. Having said that they look great bikes.
The info on this thread is\has been great and providing food for thought…
Cheers,
bellerophonFree MemberHas the route been extended now to its original plan?
Yep we did that quite a while ago now and have boardwalked up the climb where you turn of the road to make it a little easier, still not easy though, in fact a bit of a barsteward otherwise known as a challenge. The trails through the wood need another go at maintainence and we’ve just started using a local company to help us out so hopefully we’ll get that bit sorted.
bellerophonFree MemberOn-one 456 full build just over £1k. Love mine, would get a direct replacement if it ever broke.
One thing I have considered is a 456 or PA built with a £1000 worth of components; I’ve even started to consider buying the Genesis Abyss\Core 40 and using the components for the build, then using the Abyss\Core frame to replace my other hardtail frame…
What kit did you build with?
bellerophonFree MemberI love cherry red as a colour as well
Unfortunatley the cherry red altitude isn’t 853.
Whilst I was erring towards the charge, the altitude 20 is still right up there. Is there really much difference between 853 and Tange Prestige?
bellerophonFree MemberHi radoggair,
Thanks for the specific location of signage problems from the mast, we do have waymarkers up there which have in the past been pushed over by cattle I guess this is what has happenend; I know it doesn’t help you now (or ever) but this I’ll be sorting asap.
Can you let me know when it was you were down? I ask as we have recently had new signage put up from the carpark and it would help to know if you were down before this or not to gauage it’s effectiveness.
Many thanks,
bellerophonFree MemberGuidebook was Bike Scotland Trails Guide 2nd ed.
Many thanks for the info, I’ll check out that guide.
bellerophonFree MemberOnly just noticed your reply, cheers for the info…
I’m erring towards the charge, mind me asking what weight your’s comes in at?
bellerophonFree Memberbigdug, thanks for coming back to this and telling me what happened, it is much appreciated. I can’t help what the girl in the tourist told you, we have tried in the past to explain\engage with them but to no avail, it is only recently I was made aware they didn’t have any maps and were making photocopies – I know it doesn’t help you but they now have the leaflets with full colour maps.
Obviously it doesn’t absolve me of the responsibility for the waymarking, we have had feedback in general that it’s okay, although some bits need attention. That bit from the mast is meant to be waymarked but I think cattle stock in the fields have a habit of rubbing themselves off on the posts and pushing them over… I’ll be getting that bit sorted asap.
Out of interest what guidebook are you refering too?
I’m glad you found some nice bits.
bellerophonFree MemberHi ChrisL,
Yep, that’s about right, although we’ve now added confirmational waymarkers on some of the longer stretches e.g. when following the Abbey Ways when returning to Jed.
We are always trying to improve things hence my question to the OP…
bellerophonFree MemberHi bigdugsbaws,
Sorry to hear you got lost on the way round, can you let me know whereabouts? We’re always trying to improve signage so am interested where this was.
Also when was it you were down? We’ve had new signage put up from the main carpark, which is the start, (there isn’t a trailhead as such) to lead riders outwards from there to where the trail (wooden) waymarkers start.
Hey, Swello, glad you enjoyed the trails.
Cheers,
bellerophonFree MemberAre you sure the Orange is orange? I thought the P7 is black this year? And the Altitude is cherry red.
It looks like the standard colour is black, but under options you’re able to choose a custom colour which costs £100 extra, hence the price going up to £1100 – whether I can actually get one in orange is another matter I suppose.
The Altitude 10 is cherry red and a bit cheaper, presumably as it’s made from Reynolds 520 steel and has a different fork, although the rest of the spec is the same.
Looking at it again I suppose the main difference between the P7 and the Altitude 20 is the fork and frame material…
It’s looking more and more like the charge duster, shame it’s black.
bellerophonFree MemberIs that in the shops too?
Orange did say they’d run out and to be fair I’m late to the party and it’s no surprise considering the spec; we’ve literally just had a bike2work scheme announced at work… and the Crush caught my eye amongst others… ho hum… still it’s all good – time to look at other options :D
bellerophonFree MemberThought I’d answer my own question; having phoned Orange and they say 13.3Kg, so I say 29lbs.
