I never got to see them

Me neither, hence my jealousness – although did see AC/DC at the playhouse, edinburgh – don’t suppose they’ll play a small (compared to stadia) venue like that again….

    Good post Cougar.

Also love all the comments regarding Windows stability, dunno what you guys are doing, but I’ve not had an unstable Windows PC for years; in fact I struggle to remember the last BSOD.

I agree with DTF, I currently have a Genesis Abyss (140mm fork) with a 50mm stem, my bike is the small (they only did\do two sizes). Anyway currently looking at a 70mm to give me that wee bit more stretch but keep it’s handling characteristics. TBH though the bike as it is, is ace….

I think that was an attempt at trolling

  usually I don’t bite, but a while ago someone else made a comment that the rider was a beginner because of saddle bag and frame fit pump in a picture, oh well, back under my stone I go…

I like riding with one on my SS MTB too, it has a tube, some stick on patches, a tyre lever and a 4mm, 5mm allen key. Pump goes next to the bottle cage – so much better on short rides than a camel pack.

Apart from monty rides say in the Cheviots, that’s how I ride my MTB now, no need for the kitchen sink

Saddle bags are the sign of someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing …

    What a load of rubbish

    bellerophon

    Saddle bag with:

    1 x tube
    2 x tyre levers
1 x ChainTool as you can see also has two allen keys
    2 x sram powerlink
1 x pack of Park Tool super patches (in case I get more than one puncture)

pump on frame next to waterbottle

    Am I missing anything?

Would the Isle of Wight be an option? I think there’s a fair bit of riding that can be done there, anyway great excuse for weekend away if nothing else… :-)

I have an unmaintained pair of crank bros candys that are a year old and another pair on order. Am I going to die?

Nope, I’m still using five year old mallets which have gone from bike to bike. I’ve carried out one service in that time, although there is now quite a bit of play creeping back in, also my cleats are shot. Can’t decide whether to service them again or get something else…?

xc ride i would class as my local bridleways, footpaths etc and trail ride is red or black route technical stuff.

Hmm, I class all of that xc..

So what are my 100mm SIDs for then?

    All the above

Don’t get me wrong I’m not dissing your choice your choice of forks\bike build; fwiw I’m currently riding a Genesis Abyss 140mm forks, before that a Commencal Meta4 100mm, riding all the above – the Meta4 was ace, but then so was its geometry.

Looking forward to the pictures :-)

    Build looks alright, great price.

well im glad i did ok for the price, but the intention was on having a bike which is light enough for my local xc rides but capable enough for a trail ride.

Not wanting to get into an argument, but can I ask what is different between a local xc ride and a trail ride?

Did I see a request for piccies amongst the *advice*? Here’s mine:

MOD: Link removed due to malware

My route to biking; I did a CBT which my wife gave me for a birthday present. I then rode a Suzuki RG125 for a year, this gave me a foundation in road sense. I then did a 3 day DAS (the rules I think just changed so I did this so as not to be restricted) and passed my test on an unrestricted 600cc. Looking back I think my most sensible decision was to ride for a year as a learner…

My advice, if you want to do it then do it, I haven’t regretted it for a second

What do you think in summer when you see all the wanna-be roadies pootling around with their beer bellies after the TdF? Perhaps "good on ya!", but more likely "look at that prat".

Why assume we'll think people look prats, you obviously do; I don't

I went for a ride a few weeks back with a student of mine. She was there on her Cube carbon FS thingy, her man on his new carbon €6k Scott Genius, another lady … on some funky FS and an older man on his new €6.5k Cube or Focus thingy. We rode 70km, of which about 200m was singletrack. The rest of the time we were riding along fire roads and tarmaced cycle paths.

So effing what!! I've friends with Porsche 911\GT3 none of them drive like Mark Webber should they not have bought them? Hell, I ride a Yamaha R1, trouble is I don't ride like Valentino, maybe I should sell it and buy a beat up old thing….

Just got back from a fantastic 4 hour ride which took insome great riding around Peaslake but managed to loose the front on the switch back berms at the top of BKB. I didn't do anything different from normal but the front just tucked under on the second turn and left me on my arse. Anyone got any berm riding technique tips that I should know about.

Post a video up  or ask Alpin?

got bad news for you friend; you were fit in 2008, did bugger all in 2009, 2010 booked a holiday – it's going to hurt, accept it; fitness will return in 2012 with the olympics…

Funny how a lot of it is culture. If you go snowboarding or skiing without a helmet no one looks at you funny, but on a bike people give out dirty looks. Just use your common sense…

Yeah I thought this while reading the other thread, I also thought you don't see helmets at the local ice rink (well not ours anyway). what's it got to do with this? well there's a surface should you hit will hurt, you have skaters dodging in and out of people who can barely stand up who could easily get knocked\fall over – yet no-one insists on helmets.

I really don't see a problem not wearing a helmet in some situations….
