Yeah, where we break right means we continue to descend down to Trowupburn, it’s then a road section round to Elsdonburn, whilst not great means we can have a chat whilst riding :-)

Fergal, yep does sound fairly similar, I said we start in Town Yetholm when I actually meant Kirk Yetholm, we call this the Halterburn Loop, in fact more often than we’ll start from the cattle grid. Here’s a map of the

we do, you can see where the cattle grid is and where we start. Looking at the map reminds me off the cheeky bit we do in Northumberland, it’s through the wood in grid square 8627 it’s the Pie Run on steriods – root city. I must be being blind as I’mnot seeing Greenlaw…?

Hmm, we ride the Cheviots from the Scottish Borders side; there’s a couple of cracking loops that spring to mind; one starts in Hownam and the other in Town Yetholm. Also we do an all dayer from Cocklawfoot to Alwinton, scoff at the pub, and back.

The two shorter ones maybe aren’t technical if the yardstick is say GT\Innerleithen, but there are plenty challenging climbs and super fast descents, also the views are great….

    yep, this one

That’s the one, me and my wife walked that just last saturday and there we were thinking how good on a bike it would be, we even met a biker going the other way.

Now, you’ll need to help me out on a good route based on it… we walked from Patterdale to Side Farm to Sandwick, and then up and over Sleet fell, Place Fell, down to boredale hause and back to Patterdale – not long after Sandwick there places I didn’t fancy the idea of biking… so go on then what would be a good route…?

If you’re in Glenridding and the weather’s too grim to go high, the donkey track on the south-east side of Ullswater is a low-level classic.

Would that be the bridleway you can pick up from Side Farm opposite Patterdale? Can’t get a linky thing to work….

Thay have also been influential on the next generation of young
mountainbikers providing skills camps and training days for young riders,
many who have already progressed to race nationally and internationally.

Which they can, and I hope, continue to do.

True, but the amount of slating people get on this forum for using such phrases, regardless of how useful they may be, just convinced me to stay away from that whole can of rabid badgers.

Yeah, you do have a point there; it’s a shame really, and I do have to apologise as I thought you came across as a being a smart arse when really you weren’t meaning to.. bum

How many dh and free-ride bikes these days take a 57mm stroke shock?

Dunno, although you could have just said all mountain, presuming that is what you meant..?

    It’s you

No it’s me  sorry, I’ll shut up now…

I thought the first part would have been fairly obvious, based on the shock I want to use on it.

Ease up fella, here’s the description from elka’s website:

‘The Stage 5 mountain bike shock is specifically designed, engineered and custom-tuned for downhill, freeride and all-mountain riding’

So which is it? Doesn’t seem obvious to me when you have three choices…..

    But the order isn’t significant

It is if you’re betting on a specific order they come out of the barrel which is what Graham says here

    Right…

    For 1,2,3,4,5,6 in that order:

For the lottery though they don’t keep the order…

But would you have just single digit numbers in your line, when the probability of drawing any double-digit number is higher than a single digit number, or does that not matter?

Also hoping we might see some HD PVR’s with not just net streaming ability, but local streaming and uploading from/to a NAS

This Dune HD Max looks rather good, I’ve seen it on ebay for £469. Heres a review[/url] I haven’t read all of it but it looks you can add dvb-t\s cards and can record TV. It can stream from a NAS but maybe not upload, unless you specify the location for recordings to a network drive.

    Anyway looks interesting…..

    am i a fat bastard

That reminds me of one of my favourite Carter USM CDs, which starts:

    You fat bastard
    You fat bastard
    You fat bastard…

Back to the question; dunno, I’m 45 years old, 5’9″, 12.5 stone, 44″ chest – does that make me a skinny bastard??

dont understand how you can ‘work off’ muscle

You’re right you don’t work off muscle; but if you go on a diet i.e. reduce calorie intake and fail to exercise your muscles e.g. by weight training, then the first thing your body will do is ‘shrink’ your muscles as your brain will think they not needed.

I take it when you were making a weight you still trained? probably lost fat?

surely being a parent involves being the bad guy at times.

    Nail on the head.

Not having a go at gavtheoldskater as what I’m about to say might not apply; but it really gets me when parents\kids say ‘jessica\mum\dad is my best friend’ – we do not need to be our kid’s best friend

The sooner we give up on ‘civilisation’ as a failed experiment and return to the stone age the better I say….

    ^^^^LOL

    however;

people generally have less time to cook

Not wishing to come across as smug, but both me and my wife work full time, have two teenage kids, yet are able to cook dinner every night, well pretty much, it is not difficult and generally takes around 30-40mins

It doesn’t necessarily have to be organic, perhaps from a local farm where welfare standards matter.

As regards chicken, well, if you had seen where battery chickens are kept, the lack of daylight, inadequate ventilation etc., you would not eat them!

Both those statements are good reasons to buy organic, free range produce in terms of the welfare of the animal; but it doesn’t neccessarily equate to a healthier food for us in terms of nutrition.

What I, and others, are trying to say is that it is possible to eat healthily when on a budget, it is just that it probably won’t be organic free range or nor does it have to be.

educate and teach skills and that will go a long way

yep, couldn’t agree more; of course parents can do this as part of, erm, parenting

Food may be cheaper in real terms but for reasonable quality meat and poultry, ie anything that has not been intensively reared, is very expensive

Hmmm, I’ve been reading a few articles recently, and I’d say the jury’s still out on whether organic food is better for you than non-organic food; might be better for the environment or the chicken (if it’s free range as well) not neccessarily us…. but until that’s decided one or the other I’d say it was better to eat a cheap chicken plus tatties ane peas cooked yourself than cheap ready meals.

As a test I changed my 50mm stem for a 70mm stem, the change was quite noticeable. I felt a little more stretched which I was looking for, as before I kept pushing back on the saddle, which was already as far back as it could be. I need a few more rides to decide if I’ll leave it this way.

Jedi, never thought about the bb -> bars length, I think I’ll compare my bikes to see what’s what..

    Morocco October with Cyclactive

Blimey, Me and friends rode in Morroco (Atlas Mountains) back in 2000, you certainly brought back memories there with those photos – thanks 8)

Can’t add much to the thread as I didn’t take a camera with me on any rides; a memorable one though is a short night time blast around Deertrackdoctors backyard followed by lovely coffee.

As you say TJ; not the gnarliest, but good company and a load of laughs…

I used to use (sold them with my bike – doh!) the ones like these:

    Ergon

Quite close to normal grips but with the nerve cushioning\ergonomic bit, described like this:

“Ergon E1 developed for riders who prefer technically demanding terrain. Ideal for Enduro, Freeride and Cross Country riders who ride the harder lines. The slim cylindical form allows optimal rotation of the hand on the grip – for pulling up on jumps, or moving your weight back when riding drop-offs. The four different surface textures optimize grip and together with the anatomic shape allow for maximum control with minimum clamping force being required from the hand. In the area of the Ulna nerve, at the ball of the hand, a pressure relief zone has been included which prevents sleeping fingers. Thanks to an inside and outside stop bike control is assured. The extremely secure clamp (patent pending) is made from forged alu and is 100% twist resistant. Available in two sizes (both in width and length) to suit different hand sizes and preferences.”

which makes all sound rather ‘rad’ :?

Still don’t think that there should be any way of getting something like that on the scheme, though

    why not?

    As Militant said:

I reckon I did manage at least half of its journeys to work that year.

At least he was within rules, the price\type of bike shouldn’t come into it; I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of what you might call sensible sub £1000 commute bikes are used for less than half their journey’s going to work.
