“To be a cyclist is to be a student of pain….at cycling’s core lies pain, hard and bitter as the pit inside a juicy peach. It doesn’t matter if you’re sprinting for an Olympic medal, a town sign, a trailhead, or the rest stop with the homemade brownies. If you never confront pain, you’re missing the essence of the sport. Without pain, there’s no adversity. Without adversity, no challenge. Without challenge, no improvement. No improvement, no sense of accomplishment and no deep-down joy. Might as well be playing Tiddly-Winks.”
I felt pain this morning on my ride to work and luckily no one around to see :-) my excuse being that this was the first of the year, not really looking forward to going home at the moment…
bellerophonFree MemberI’d write off any tube I lent out
I’d say that was giving :-)
If someone ‘lent’ me tube I’d give them one back mind
bellerophonFree MemberI got a Tissot PRC200 like this at christmas:
and I love it, however, if my budget was able to stretch to it then I would’ve gone for the CW you posted, let’s have a look at it again shall we??
bellerophonFree MemberMilky – Dogs arse, all of them. Don’t do it to yourself.
Are they really THAT bad?? I appreciate the warning but can I ask if you’ve had 1st hand experience?
amplebrew – I’d definately do a bit of homework on parts and servicing before buying one.
The parts and servicing bit was something to check out that’s for sure, thanks for the info.
bellerophonFree MemberA folding camper is not a trailer tent a trailer tent needs pegging out usually loads of pegging out a folding camper only has pegging points on the awning same as a caravan.
Correct.
We have one of the above, it’s a Conway Crusader and we call it a folding camper. When erected it has two double beds permanently made, and the middle bit where the dining table is can also be made into a bed; in all it offers (a cosy) 6 berths.
It has a toilet\sink, fridge, gas cooker with hob, a cupboard and hot and cold water.
Putting it up takes about 15-20 mins, the awning adds half and hour at least – all depends on how much shouting I have to do
We didn’t fancy a caravan for towing reasons (never having towed before) and this was a lot cheaper than a 6 berth caravan.
bellerophonFree Memberthat’s (wild guess alert) around 500 calories each way at a brisk pace?
Hmmm, this calorie burnt calculator show calories burnt as 976 if I use my weight 174lbs, cycling time 85 minutes and speed 12-14mph; this will change depending on the OPs weight, obviously double it for the daily extra cals you’re using.
Just found this calculator which may be more accurate as it has cycling specific option also linked from the bike for all website.
Having said that my commute supposedly uses 866 calories, but I don’t really eat that much more, but then I only do it tues and thurs so plenty of time to recover; I would though have porridge for brekkie and a protein shake masde with milk post ride, plus a banana about 1/2 an hour before going home….
bellerophonFree Memberyou always give one warning shot
Nah you want to read Sun Tzu’s The Art of War – all guns blazing!! (I think)
bellerophonFree MemberCurrently I’m riding with a bottle and pump on the frame, a small saddle bag with multitool, tube, lever, sram powerlinks and those pre-glued patches – these are for local rides of up to 2.5-3hours. If though I’m going out into the cheviots I’ll probably take a smallish backpack, mainly so I can a stash a jacket if I need to. To be honest I prefer not wearing a backpack.
Mind you when I wear a backpack I don’t take much more kit; a compass and bodybag, both small. I do wonder what some people carry, they look blooming heavy.
I don’t think roadies don’t wear a backpack because of fashion, the riding position can mean that the pack falls forward onto your neck, well it did when I tried it. Bit like not wearing a helmet with a peak as it gets in the way of your view, well it did when I tried it.
bellerophonFree MemberI’ve tried spinning/running on the same day as weights
I used to this i.e running (on treadmill) immediately before weights, this really affected my weights session as I was knackered from the run and therefore didn’t work the weights as well as I could, as you can see I do these on completely different days.
If I were to combine them again I’d either do the weights first, then run; or weights in the morning and run at night.
Remember though, that it is the recovery days that allow the results to happen.

Waist is getting smaller, but I’ve gotten heavier? BOOOOOOM as they say.No, what they say is: ‘you lucky lucky bastard’
bellerophonFree MemberAgreed, the key thing in ‘routine’ for me is being at the gym.
triple agreed :-)
My goal is fat loss whilst maintaining muscle\strength. The holy grail of fat loss plus muscle gain, whilst not impossible for some people, is generally considered unrealistic\very difficult.
fat loss due to diet; currently eating maintenance calories – 500 with a target lose of 1lb/week
muscle maintenance due to weight lifting plus eating enough protein in my diet, 1gram of protein per lb of bodyweight
the cardio element is because I like it and adds just a wee bit extra, I probably could get away with just three weight sessions a week plus good diet.
bellerophonFree Memberwallop – Member
What are you trying to achieve? Weight loss or general fitness? That is a good question; c’mon Jamie what are your goals??
bellerophonFree MemberMon: back & chest
Wed: legs
Fri: shoulders & core
I don’t do any direct arm work. Tues/Thurs are mtb/roller bike (plus a ride at the weekend). Warmup is light dumbbell workout using a gym ball to hit abs and keep the weights down.
I change workouts every 4 weeks.
Nice :-)
bellerophonFree Memberbjj.andy.w
Have a look at the tentigers workout in the build bigger muscles section on the mens health forumI’ve not been on that forum, the one I use is myprotein forum good honest advice (most of the time)
bellerophonFree MemberBellerophon does 2 different workouts, I do 3. Two way split and three way split. As opposed to doing the same workout every time you go in the gym.
Beat me to it  a 4 way split might use this:
mon: session 1
tue: session 2
wed: rest
thu: session 3
fri: session 4
sat\sun rest:where each session targets a different group of muscles, to me this gets complicated, and as a beginner (so far 1.5 years consistentish dedicated weight training, although I have trained with weights most of my life) it’s too advanced a training scheme for my liking and needs.
bellerophonFree Member5thElefant
I approve.
Cheers bud, I thought about a 3 day split but I really love the simplicity of what I’m doing. Also adding weight, if not each session, every week :D
Similar to my workout but I do a 3-way split and 6×6
Out of interest what’s your split?
bellerophonFree MemberHere’s what I do:
Gym Session A: (weights)
squats 5×5
bench 5×5
bent over row 5×5
press ups 3xFGym Session B: (weights)
squats 5×5
shoulder press 5×5
deadlifts 1×5
pull ups 3xFin this schedule:
Sun: weights
Mon: mtb bike ride (not every week so sometimes nowt)
Tue: run at lunch (typically 3miles or intervals\hill work)
Wed: weights
Thur: run at lunch (typically 3miles or intervals\hill work)
Fri: weights
Sat: nothing or mtb rideThe gym sessions are alternated – it’s based on a routine known as Stronglifts 5×5

bellerophonFree MemberI’m getting some minor vertigo just looking at this on screen
phew, not just me then…
bellerophonFree Membersimonfbarnes
so they last longer
easier to ride uphillespcially when perched behind a nice bottom
bellerophonFree Memberboardman maybe, cracking value; otherwise agree with dogt..
bellerophonFree MemberGot to the point on the superbikes where we thought we’d either end up in jail or dead
oh bollox :?
bellerophonFree MemberMy wife met a woman at an NCT class whose husband liked mtbing, I met him at the gym to say hello, bought a cheap raleigh and went riding, enjoyed it so much. And that was it.
bellerophonFree MemberThe bike that got me into this shit was a Raleigh Max Cromo II, fully rigid, canti brakes, bright yellow, fantastic – do I want another one? do I hell ;-)
The bloke that got me into to this shit was Russ, fully on, great fella and brilliant friend, fantastic – would I want to ride with him again, hell yes, can I? hell no
What I’m trying to say, it’s not what I ride but who I ride with that makes it.
bellerophonFree MemberWhat with the development of twintips and now this, I may have to revise my opinion that waterskiing is just for people who can’t wakeboard….!
^^^ :-)
Bit like I think triple jump is for those who can’t long jump
bellerophonFree MemberWay behind the times, and probably a bit mainstream for many but I’m on the final part of the millenium trilogy – ‘the girl who kicked the hornets nest’. Enjoyed all 3 books so far
Currently on book two, great series.
Oh another favourite is London Fields, especially as when I read it I lived there.
bellerophonFree Memberphatstanley child of god
by cormac mccarthy.
just your typical southern gothic, squirrel eatin’, necrophiliac loner-stroke-serial killer kinda protagonistPerfect, thanks for the pointer bud.
One of my favourites is ‘God is a bullet’ by Boston Teran
bellerophonFree Memberbellophron, you can include the donkey track in quite a few routes. Short and sweet would be up and over Boredale Hause to either Boredale or Bannerdale. Or you can loop it with a monster traverse of Helvellyn ridge. But the classic is to go up at Hartsop round The Knott onto High Street, then head all north the way down to The Cockpit and Pooley Bridge
cheers ir_bandito, I was talking to my wife about this again and we thought Pooley Bridge might come in to it. Anyway I’m off to study the map.
Thanks again

I keep getting drawn to this thread! Really enjoying the vids, pics and reading your different routes. That’s more like it CG
bellerophonFree Memberer is it legal to ride this being in Englandshire?
Dunno, doubt it; I would say we’ve never had a problem with anyone when on them, but then I don’t think we’ve met anyone when on them – if you get what I mean :?
bellerophonFree MemberHere we go dug out the two mags I have. This one is from

and here’s a piccie (well just) of pennine shore:MOD: Image removed due to malware
There does seem to be a theme with these ones I’ve posted… On the Total Bike route we don’t do the bit from point 13 – 12, we go along the track by the reservoir and then turn up the hill for a very steep climb…
bellerophonFree MemberI’ve only one mtb – a Genesis Abyss. I have a road bike for commuting.
bellerophonFree Membercoastkid
bellerophon;
I dont have a GPS just good old maps and memorysYep, Me too although beginning to think about a gps.
Thanks for the pointers to the sites.. let’s hope for a dry spring\summer
bellerophonFree Memberdrac is this the killer loop that was in an old MBR?
If it isn’t it’ll be pretty close – Drac please confirm. I’ve still the old mags with the loops in it (I think two different mags did very similar routes) I’ll dig em out, that pic also looks very much like the cocklawfoot to alwinton ride we do….
bellerophonFree MemberYour looking in the wrong places
As far as the Cheviots go i love it for the isolation,
prefer the Scottish side with a trip onto the summit and a visit to the WW2 aircraft crash sites (wellington and B17) on a summers day,
Its not techy-its xc, so its not Glentress.
But some nice long rolling descents, after long rolling climbsCoastkid, couldn’t agree more; whereabouts is that crash site? Do you have routes of those rides you’ve linked to in the videos? I think I’ve done very similar, but always interested in variation
bellerophonFree MemberGeda
This is looking back to Scotland on a bitch of a climb on the return from the dere street ride
Isn’t that the Heatherhope reservoir in the middle of the pic? Often fancied descending that climb you’ve taken that picture from.
bellerophonFree MemberWhile I’m here, here is the other loop I mentioned, we call it the
MOD: Image removed due to malware
you’ll see why. I must have been keen on this one as I’ve annotated it a bit. This and the Halterburn one are evening rides…
