    Hi Fergal,

To be honest we would normally just ride the loop I put up earlier, the descent down from the eastern summit to the road is superb and fast. You can make the start of the descent more technical as there are a couple of steep options.

If you don’t feel the need for an actual route you could spend a couple of hours dicking about on the eildons, I did this and it’s quite good fun. what I did was park up in Eildon village, there’s a track that’ll take you to St Cuthbert’s Way, from here I basically went up each of the hills; small one first, then up the middle one this was a push. Going down the other side there is a very steep rocky path. Then up the eastern hill and down again…

We’ll all have different ideas of technical, mucking about like this gives you the chance to try the trickier bits. The loop I posted, has it’s technical bits – one being a rooty climb for example..

    hey br nice one

Bellerphron that looks good, any tips for a loop taking in all the best bits, the more technical the better.

    I’m thinking… whilst watching Die Hard 4

I’ve quite often started at Innerleithen and up the XC route to Minch Moor; along to the Three Brethren; down the Merida route; into Yair Forest – and back along the quiet back road to Innerleithen

    Yep, that’d do it buddy.

I have another Tracklogs (can make pdf) of ride from Selkirk to the Three Bethren and back, also one that is the 2005 Merida, which is basically Selkirk –> Three Bethren –> Minch Moor –> and back.

as far as Fox servicing goes, here’s a trick – buy enduro upgrade seals ……

Yep that’s defo a solution, however given that I don’t have to do that with other forks, it seems a bit much to have to do that with fox forks given their price

    bellerophon

I’ve got Revs my friend has Sektors, both are v good forks and didn’t take much setting up at all.

Maybe it doesn’t apply to the Vans, but the service schedule of Fox forks would put me off.

Framed weighs in at 5.5lbs, my build weighs in at 31lbs inc pedals; basically I transferred all the components from my Genesis Abyss, not sure how you get it down to 26lbs??

I ride every thing on it; cheviots, local trails in Scottish Borders and trail centres.

Personally, I’d love to do a heli drop!

I hope they drop from the chopper on their bikes and ride off

to make it more niche it should only be open to those with Raleigh choppers

tbhTJ that photo does not really look like there’s much to hit. Say you went to a bmx track, a dh course did something like that, then a helmet would be required.

and if I understand TJ’s position he’ll probably agree, remember he has already said he’ll wear a helmet at trail centres, in fact I’ve seen a picture of him wearing one, he’s not anti helmet wearing, I think he’s anti COMPULSORY helmet wearing, and so I am

BTW I wear a helmet, most of the time

The fork might be an odd sounding choice I know, but it’s what I’ve got and it’ll keep the handling sharp

Nah not that odd, I’m going to experiment with dropping the travel in mine down to 120mm.

got my 19.5 down to about 27 lbs

That’s pretty good, but like you say a tough build and probably a few pennies as well….

I’m not too worried about the weight, I haven’t even ridden it properly; I’m interested in what kit people have used to get sub 30lbs.

One thought I did have, is that my fork is OEM and might well have a steel steerer, how much heavier that’d be over an ally one I don’t know??

I’m still loving it… in fact me a riding buddy have made a real effort this year so far, with weekly night rides and a saturday morning ride every two weeks.

I’m just about to build up my Prince Albert frame that arrived today, so loving it even more.

    molgrips –
3 minutes makes a lot of difference. Try shaving 3 mins of your fastest time, you’ll see what I mean

Yeah, when you put it like that it does seem a lot, heaven knows how I’m going to get back down to my fastest which was 52mins!! Mind you that was on a different bike, which as we all know is what really counts

I’ve turned my bike computer off now as I was constantly trying to beat my time resulting in a sweaty broken mess when I got to work, trying to pace myself now..

Funnily enough I’ve just put my computer on the bike in an effort to slow down :? today I made a real effort to take it steady and what a difference; my first checkpoint (usually 14 mins) I was down 2 mins, my second checkpoint (usually 32mins) I was down 3 mins and by the end I was down 3mins on my fastest this year.

The big difference not being anywhere near as gubbed as normal, can 3 minutes make THAT much difference, or was is the carb (beer) loading over the weekend??

I’ve just started again this year, well 2 weeks ago, my commute is 16.5 miles each way. This is my 4th year and I’ve started adding extra days, I used to ride in on just tuesday and thursday, last week I did tues\weds\thurs and have to say really felt it on the last ride home.

I think the main point up above is related to the speed, I have this horrible tendency to treat each ride as time trail and really need to take it steadier on some of the rides. I’m planning on adding mondays as well, but this is also the day I ride at night so we’ll see how that goes.

Oh, I ride a flat barred road bike with spds. I have a porridge breakfast (usually) and on the bike I have a protein shake with milk. I buy bananas for mid morning and just before leaving, lunch is quite often a baked potato, and I have a protein shake when I get in.

So will this one, if he plays his cards right. Gifts of UK bike jerseys go a long way toward encouraging my participation.

Hey, thanks for the replies, really good info. We’re going to be in San Fran for 3 days, doing all the usual stuff, but your comments have confirmed that I should seriously look into this properly.

I’ll probably have half a day at most, and as this isn’t a biking holiday for me I think I’ll try and get the best out of Mount Tam, mainly to say I’ve done it – soppy maybe.

So for those offering to help I’ll be in touch once I’ve a thought a bit more about it, we’re not going until end of june so I have a wee bit of time.

I think around 30 min or 20mph for a 10 would be a great barrier to beat

Yep, ^^this is usually the first target, I think it’s known as ‘evens’. If you can do that the next BIG BIG target is 20 min or 30mph for a 10, or if you’re like me getting as far below 30mins for a 10 as possible, I got stuck at about 25 mins :o

    V-brake stuff like Speed Dial

Yeah, they stayed shiny and nice for the whole 10 years or so I had them on my old Marin. Probably still being shiny and nice somewhere now

    On my Marin?? :D

Obviously not but my Marin road bike (flat bars) has Avids on and working and looking fantastic 8 years on… in fact so are the hubs, mechs, shifters,bb with very little attention, I know it doesn’t get as grotty as an mtb but still…
