Thanks, will look at Radon. Forgot about Evil bikes. Will have a look.

And trek….dunno if I could face riding the ford mondeo of bikes….yeah I know, the mondeo is a brilliant car but still…

So normally I will do a about three rides a week, 15 miles average, 2-3000 foot of climbing, lots of technical sections, drops yes, jumps less so (unless flows). Lots of woods, moors, rocky stuff.

Like to ride pretty steep stuff too.

Got my eye on a Transition smuggler/sentinel or Ns bikes Snabb 130 (think it’s a Snabb).

Fancy a four bar or vpp

Thank you all for the input, it does appear shimano are a no-no. Such a shame as I love their stuff.

Anyway, this is all for my bikepacking bike so long term reliability was what I was after over crazy stopping power.

Have ended up with a pair of Clarke M2’s from my LBS. Super cheap and they have not had a single pair fail. Not the most powerful, but that’s not what I need.

They feel like they cost a lot more.

Sorry, should have added that I have unstared all my segments on Strava. Also, you drop them into new files but then they move automatically to Segments.

Every time I start my Garmin it says segments deleted but they are all still on my Garmin.

The good thing about Strava segments over Garmin is the huge user base for Strava so people are creating them all the time. With Garmin people are not doing that. Maybe the paid thing (which I support to be honest) might allow some kind of rethink. We will see.

For now, this works for me.

Think I am going to get as many segments downloaded whilst I can. Just did a quick search on google and there are a few options out there for exporting segments. Don’t want to overload Doogals site.

If you connect your wahoo to your computer is there a “segments” folder? You could pop the fit files in there and see if it works?

I think the paid for Strava thing basically makes this step more automatic.

They come up automatically. Just make sure you can see them in Strava live segments (under training) and they are enabled.

If you don’t have Strava live segments but just have the word “segments” log into Garmin connect on phone or computer and change segments to Strava but don’t star any segments on Strava. Do a sync and it should be good to go.

    Update…

Been for a ride today and…

It works! Downhill Live segments are back!!

Worked like a dream, maps, times, gradient, everything!

No need for Strava summit at all now.

I have been caught foul of the ridiculously low number of bike spaces at Inverness northbound. Had to change an entire cycling holiday to start from Inverness.

This was over ten years ago mind.

I have used loads of scotrail trains over the years and ALWAYS book if I can, but equally have turned up with no reservation and managed fine.

No, I am recovering from a snapped quad tendon so my riding is more on the elderly gent side of things rather than huck Norris.

Why can’t I add a picture? I am trying to add my Instagram picture!!

Didn’t someone die / have a serious accident in the UK because their front wheel came out?

Absolutely top class. Well done. Need to put the mountain back in my biking…

Yep, had an alfine based mtb in my quiver for years. Always have a winter mtb with one. My ebike has one too. Brilliant things, but do need to be maintained. Biggest issues are with dirty cables.

Tent just drops over time, think maybe I need new straps. Just to add, I run a 29+wheel on non + forks which are not suspension corrected, so there is not a great deal of clearance.

Think I also need to get new cables and hoses.

Good tips, thanks guys. The tent on top is not ideal, but one thing I have found from previous trips is that the weight of the tent slowly pulls down and catches my front wheel. Putting it on top eliminates this.

It’s not a mega heavy tent or anything, just gravity doing it’s job.

Also find that bags underneath can put cables at tight angles. Maybe lots of playing around is needed.

Thanks, will have a look on YouTube for some ideas.

I am aware of the potential rip off nature of these bars, but everything is inspired or ripped off something else. 650b wheels for example. Mavic, 1920’s french off road bikes anyone?

As others have commented on forums, the price of JJ bars is ridiculous.

Are you sure they are 130mm? Anyway, if so then yes you can get adaptors which make up the difference.

Excellent!   I have done this on my own before at a very leisurely pace, are there still plenty of folk who adopt this more mortal approach to the ride?

Wow, ok then.  Thank you for the links.  I see a pattern that perhaps it is something to attempt in better weather and perhaps with more time.

Mmmmmm….Maybe a southern Scotland road tour might be better in October!

Brill thanks. The app suggests (with a five 29 which is the closest bike I guess) as:

    Hsc 2

    Hsr 2

    Lsc 7

    Hsc 10

So besides Lsc it’s not a million miles out. Will fit a large band (to tuned recommended this too) and start with factory and see how I go. I like an active shock that provides lots of grip when pedalling so the lsc factory settings may suit me better…

Hi ferret, man where to start!  There are as many routes as there are tracks on the ground round here!

A good place to start is having a mess around in Storthes Hall Woods (not far from Almondbury), another way to get to know the area is come along to the Albion Cycles shop ride (first Saturday in every month – http://www.albion-cycling.co.uk/index.html).

Drop me a PM on the email in profile if you like.

+1 for silicon grips, although I would recommend the cheap ones off eBay they appear to be exactly the same as branded ones…

I have used Vibrocore bars for over a year now and absolutely love them.  I know it’s easy to be influenced by marketing hype, but genuinely I have noticed a difference. I used some 800mm Kore bars on my Segment before these and the reduction in arm pump and numb hands was really noticeable.

I was very sceptical before, but have always been impressed with Spank stuff so took a punt.

It is really noticeable on long descents, just get to the bottom and arms feel nice and loose.

Ta, will have a look around and then ask subs very nicely.

I have the four bike version. It’s mega.

Secure, easy to get bikes on, tilts really well, easy to mount.

You got some route details or a gpx maybe? Besides the trail centres I haven’t explored that area at all.

Looks stunning, great work on the video.

Thanks all, sounds a bit naff then. I am not a fan of mega tech steep descents, I like the swoopy swoopy stuff with flow (!)

Any one got any good loops in that area then or maybe Gradbach area? I am a Dark Peak rider so have not done a great deal of white stuff. Maybe I should buy that book.

The alpkit panniers I use are the ones with the plastic clips at the top (the others are designed to be “strapped”?). The clips a tough and clip very firmly to the pannier, plus you can secure them with a velcro strap at the bottom. Never had them come even close to coming off.

If you are keen on using a pannier rack, the closest I have seen to a dry bag which maintains the lightness of bikepacking stuff with the security of a pannier is these ones from Alpkit:

    Waterproof Panniers and Bikepacking Bags

(there are three sizes available, I found the 20 litre to be ideal and discounted at the moment!)

They are light, simple, secure, cheap, have a slim profile and totally waterproof.

I use a tortec slimline rack on my commuter and it is ace with the above panniers. For a lighter version of traditional pannier set up, I have found this pretty good.

Good point whitestones, the good spots would certainly not be advertised! Will use my usual approach, as in I am tired, this will do!

Will look on the bearbones forum.

Where are details of the group start?

Cheers for the replies, I am staying in the central belt at the inlaws, so I will drive up to which ever spot is the best on the day. Drag lifts are fine, done a bit in Austria which seamed to have loads of pomas/t-bars.
