Why are they “crusties”? Is desperately trying to halt the tide of inevitable loss of quality of life of billions of people crusty? Is that the most discriptive term you can manage?

Chief, I’m sure you don’t have words. Don’t worry it’s ok.

The whole argument is just silly. If your concerned with maximum fitness you wouldn’t use a motor would you? I’m just off to the e gym where I’ll do some motor assisted bench press at 200kg. I normally press 4-6 sets of 10 at 80kg but I press more at the e gym so must be fitter…

I wasn’t considering buying that particular frame but I have been considering a new one on pre order. Strange re the Orange warranty comment. Last year Orange were amazing and went well above and beyond for me, very impressed. Thanks for the feedback, it’s really reinforced what I thought I knew, I’ll skip Pace I think…

how on earth do you owe that sort of cash on a GM skip like that? burn it and buy and old honda for 1K??

Normal bike = human being trading effort for gain in a win, win scenario. Ebike = fat **** buys the illusion of fitness but should probably spend their money elsewhere and stop lying to themselves

I have routinely driven to work and the shops for 30 years too, not sure what the point is. So anyone who drives to a shop has no business buying environment friendly products? I’ve pointed out that an activity I enjoy seems to have become less environment friendly over time. This seems true to me. Things are not black and white but it seems agreed here that MTB in general of any description is just not green in any way and their is no distinction between trail centre ebiking and cycling on your own in the wilds. I’ll get my coat…

I tend to throw broken carbon parts at old ebikers with Rangerovers*

Well I’m off to buy a fracking great V8 Merc jeep a couple of ebikes and start driving to the Lakes every weekend. Seems it’s the same thing to most people.

@molgrips the point of the thread is obvious isnt it? I thought this was a forum where people provoked conversation. Can’t say anything about it is a shocking revelation either. Just that in the places that I visit and the riding I do things seem to have changed rapidly lately. They seem to have changed in a way that seems much less sustainable in general. Not hard to understand.

Obviously true, sudden heart attack or worse can happen to anyone. Doesn’t mean that there is no point trying to live the healthiest life you can…

Interesting points of view all round. I think my view or version of Mtbing is as individual as everyone else’s. My last HT I owned from 2006 till 2019/20. I ran that for thousands and thousands of miles just replacing consumables. I bought my car new (1.4 Honda petrol) in 2007 and expect to use it for another 90k at least. I ride 2-3 times a week from the front door and drive to a ride 2-4 times a month out of that. I hope that in comparison to other things I could be doing its relatively “greenish”. I’m also hoping that my lifestyle which involves a career in forestry/tree surgery and outdoor hobbies like Mtbing, running and walking will keep me from being a burden on the NHS, something I consider again to minimise my drain on resources and the knock on effect that has. I think we are all different in how we view what we do, I just guess the version of Mtbing I see increasingly doesnt align with what it is to me.

So, I’m 48. I can smash out that climb on a HT all day. I’m not sure the plump old grey haired lady drinking a Costa coffee (she seemed very nice) could do it without. 1. The coffee. 2. The E(vil) bike. 3. The big car. No offence but I don’t see Alex Honnold climbing el cap on an electric winch when he’s old n grey…

@thegeneralist I had assumed any activity that meant you spent your “average” Saturday cycling instead of buying, driving, eating or in some way consuming was in some way “green” …I know it’s a tired phrase

Oh forgot about the planned obselesance, I’ll just throw my bike into a skip on the way home as I can’t get a “wingnut”* for it.

*Insert any overpriced carbon component you like here.

Tosh, so ebikes don’t have a higher cost of maintenance/parts usage? And Rangerovers are clearly good for the planet? I’ll get my coat…wasted.

Yep, trail centres and ebikes can get in the sea with superboost….I might take up drag racing, seems greener..

I once bought a Citroen ZX privately. Drove away in it a realised they had left a car starting booster pack on the back seat. I kindly returned it to them before breaking down on the hard shoulder on the way home

I’m not px hater but there’s no way I would spend primo ££ with them. They are good for cheap no chance of good warranty punt stuff. There’s a reason some brands are traditionally a bit more pricey. As a comparison, a mate bought a Scandal and had a couple of issues when only a month old, they just told him to jog on, like I said they would. In contrast the paint on my Orange at just under a year old was warrantied by Orange with a new 2021 frameset. You pays your money and all that…

Doh! I’ve 2 sets of brakes to bleed just done one and proceeded to empty my Shimano mineral oil into the Rockshox oil bottle next to it, same colour! Not sure I trust those eBay sellers selling “genuine” oil. Anyone bought any or fancy selling me some genuine stuff??

@zilog6128 I must stretch my withered husk of an imagination to visualize some old hippies stroking beards and chanting to the home bargains distribution centre.

No offense but it’s the most overhyped boring unimpressive thing to look at. We have friends nearby who constantly offer us free tickets, I’ve never taken them up on it. As for security ushering you along a footpath, they have no right. I would be speaking with the rights of way officer…

Everthing i’ve ever bought from Hope was rubbish. 2 sets of brakes that leaked like sieves from new. Seatclamps that just didnt work, same for Qr’s (remember those) Hubs that ate pawls. I could go on. despite that the new bike has a Hope headset (only beacuse the bearings are easy to get). As life goes on Ive got no time to tinker. Despite people who change their car every 2 years going on about brakes lasting 15, I would go Shimano. They generally work perfectly, dont require tinkering and are so cheap that a caliper only costs a pint and a packet of hipster pork scratchings in the wrong pub…ymmv

I say do it. My bikes firmly in the trail hard tail catagory. 2.35 forecaster up front and a 2.25 crossmark! Out back. Flies along and the crossmark hasn’t killed me yet.

Burgtec composites here. Ive smacked them a fair bit and bent pins but the body is tough and they have been fine with new pins in. For £36 they are great.

Jees 6 months for a rear mech! I just sold an XT from 2005ish. Done thousands of miles. eBay buyer was chuffed to bits. I would go with hanger alignment.

My riding buddy is 6′ 4″ and bought an on one 29er just before lockdown. He doesn’t like it at all and is spending a bomb re doing his 15 year old Trek 26″ xc bike…I would think you need to go s/h or custom….

@nickjb beacause its irellevant and it’s only objective is to causes unease regarding wheel size. Theres no article on the death of 27.2 seatposts is there? But buyers remorse regarding wheelsize involves a new frame/fork/wheels/tyres…keep those punters spending. The only other industry i can compare it to is clothing fashion…

Yep i liked the random tandem, i think Ashton is an ace guy, really adds value to the channel. But increasingly the whole channel just looks like a Chain Reaction/Nukeproof sales video. No drama but im unsubscribed and its gone into the “used to watch” filing cabinet..shame as ill miss Doddy telling me about the new 35″ wheel size running 1.9 panaracers with a 74% head angle and super short reach for a poppy ride…and that all lls stuff is destined for the skip.
