Ive had 3 sets of hope brakes and whilst i do think they modulate very well this is due to them being gutless and underpowered… overrated cr@p

Very good kit, they are not really lightweight and offer a bit of protection if you have a spill, very hardwearing. They dont wet out easily which is suprising considering there quite thick, ive ridden in them in the rain quite a bit but they dont really absorb water much at all…

Thats wierd, using brand new blackspire rings, kmc x9 chain, pg990 cassette & XT shadow mech my drivetrain was utterly silent when lubed. Put the kcnc jockeys on and the bike always sounded a bit chainey..(if thats a word)…mech was adjusted fine to allow that the kcnc wheels dont have float on the top pulley, put the xt jockeys on and silent again. Same on gf bike that i tried em on, maybe i got an iffy pair..

im the only person in the world that prefers wire beads, ive rolled kevlar beads off before cornering, never a wire bead.. put that in your pipe of knowledge and smoke it

It’s all labels, labels, labels isnt it.. just like the £4 vs £100 pair of jeans debate.. if your a label whore and really need that xx equipped carbon rocket for & 7k and your wallet can take it then your asking to have the piss taken… considering the law of diminishing returns you dont need to spend more than 2-3k to get something that will ride 90% as well as anything…. oh and I would much rather a frame from one of the best frame shops in the world (Taiwan) than some of the wonky old stuff welded up in this country..

I can pretty much echo what damion has said. I would advise starting to work for a firm first to get a feel for tree work and learn to be a ground worker first, it’s a good foundation for climbers, and will help you with a safe attitude…..Work is more busy in summer but I tend to be able to tick over in the winter months.
If your thinking of climbing all day for a firm you are going to need to be pretty fit.. and lastly it can be the most dirty, dangerous, wet, windy and tiring job in the world but is for me mostly, the best job in the world…

Thanks for your opinions, ive been toying with the idea of a road bike for a while and i think that might be on the cards.. im going to have a look at some mtb races first though, something in the south east preferably that I can have a pop at…

ive run bc and non bc conti tyres, x kings & verts, the non bc ones are fine, hardly plasticy, the bc ones are marginally more grippy and roll a bit better, both the x kings roll the same as far as i can tell.. bc ones are a bit, and i mean a bit better, not 3 times the price better though…

we used old school type string or twine, coated it in wood glue and pushed into the gaps and painted with the boards, has worked better than anything else we tried.

It sounds like your really over analyzing your riding at the moment and don’t sound at all confident.. a course isnt my cup of tea, but if you have belief in the skills course your going on (which you seem to) im sure youre gonna come away with a more positive, confident mind set which it desperately sounds like you need…

David, what percentage of your riding is off road? You sound to me like the typical roadie to55er who gives them all a bad name… why the attack on mountainbikers when your one yourself?

Well compared to an inline Thomson, with a fair bit of post out they do feel like they have more give. But Thomson inline posts are insanely stiff anyway. I went from inline to layback and do think it has more give but if your after a seatpost specifically with some flex try somewhere else..

I’de like to see the back of generic, cheaply made products that fail which are just rebranded and painted pink or white or anodised the colour of sick to get people to buy them when there are better but less flash components out there..
