I just thought I’d add a post having had a few rides with my new Varia. I think it’s a great bit of kit. I ride on quiet country roads, B roads and the odd fast A road. I obviously cant speak for a urban riding.
It’s brilliant for increasing awareness of whats coming up behind you, with audible tones that change depending on the speed of the vehicle approaching. It’s especially valuable when the wind is blowing in your face carrying the noise of an approaching vehicle away from you. I have mine paired with a Wahoo Elmnt Bolt which gives a visual display of oncoming traffic as well. I don’t think I’ll ever ride on the road without it again.

Your Bonty is lovely. A stunning old school steel HT. I can understand that most don’t get Retro Bikes, they are not as capable as modern bikes. An 60’s era Aston Martin is nowhere near as capable as today’s Aston but that’s not the point. I’ve got a ‘95 Kilauea in the garage, and until a ‘mid nineties Merlin XLM comes along it’s staying there….

EE here also, more than happy. Being able to share data (teenage daughter always needs a bit more before the end of the month) is very handy.

Don’t think I’ve seen Wings of the Apache mentioned above… I suspect there is a reason for that though.

I was going to say there is a thread over on Retrobike about replacment elastomers. I’d be interested to see how you get on, I have a Judy thats still good at the moment but it wouldn’t hurt to have some spares in the garage.

Good thread! I used to listen to Hip Hop when I was in my early teens but lived in the constant fear that my parents would play one of my cassette tapes and hear the lyrics! Cypress Hill Black Sunday is as good today as it was back in ’93.

I loved the original Battlefront on XBox and spent hours on it. It was a fantastic game. I was really looking forward to the sequel and was bitterly disappointed when I read the reviews about needing to spend to progress.

First and only ride of the year was on the third. A cold thirty miles on the road bike which I enjoyed. Before that I think it was October that I last had a pedal. I’m not busting a gut to get out in the cold, I can’t see the point.

Strangest thing I ever found while out on a ride was a small patrol harbour with several Gurkhas sorting their admin. I think we surprised each other.

I think we’re at 7 unstarted at the moment between the three of us… Is this like an n+1 thing?

Think of them as loft insulation, the more kits you have the warmer the house will be. I tend to start kits and then go back to them over time, I think I have nine on the go all in various stages of construction.

I went for a cheap eBay airbrush. It’s a double action gravity fed one, it came with different needles, a hose and moisture trap. For what I paid it’s been brilliant and rather than get an expensive one straight away see how he does with a cheaper one first?

Another Enigma owner here. I’ve had an Etape for eight years now. Never given me any trouble
and the build quality is excellent. I doubt very much that you’ll be dissapointed if you buy one.

Thanks for the comments… Ref the QR @bez – In my defence ever since I had my first front disc brake I always put the qr on the non disc side. The front QR’s on my rim braked road bikes are always on the right.

I’ve owned two Kona bikes, a ‘96 Kilauea and a ‘95 Kilauea. I restored the ‘95 as the ‘96 version that I wanted is rare as rocking horse poop. I brought the frame for £50 and built it up buying parts from Retrobike and EBay.

    I ended up with this…

    Kilauea

Mavic sunset rims, Onza HO brakes, Judy fork and a smattering of X Lite bits. Needs more anodised purple.

I can reccommend the Garmin Instinct Solar. I like the 12 days between charges especially! It isn’t a watch for navigating (although it does basic nav) but health tracking stuff is very good.

I spent my fortieth birthday it my sister in law’s place in Spain. I spent most of the day floating on an inflatable unicorn drinking beer in the sun. I couldn’t have been happier….
What about a signed TDF jersey? A frame/wheel building or bike maintenance course? There must be something you’d like to do or have in your life?
