Out of interest other than looks, why is it better than a Gravity Dropper.

I am looking for an uppy downy seat post for new bike. I have a GD on the other bike and it works flawlessly it just looks rubbish,

Driven both TT and 350Z, I found the 350Z much more fun to drive. Car was for wife and she ended up with a SLK350 instead but the 350Z was by far the most fun car to drive by a country mile. It in fact reminded me of a Japanese version of my old TVR Chimaera.

You probably found the 350z skitish because it was actually telling you what it was doing. Most cars these days totally insulate you from this.

New style TT looks very pretty though, IMHO the MK1 is looking its age.

Generally if a boot feels comfy in the shop its too loose, it should not hurt but a new pair of boots will not feel like a pair of slippers if it fits properly.

    My tips would be.

Be honest about your ability, a pair of super stiff race boots may look cool but will not be comfy for all day skiing.

Footbeds, these can fix a lot of problems and help prevent cramping etc.

Ask the fitter how much experience they have and if you dont trust the boot fitter dont be scared to walk away. I did on my last pair of boots in resort in Val D’Isere the first place wanted to sell me a pair of boots that were too big, I ended up in Killy Sports and my boots were great, I was there for the season and they did need a little blowing out on one boot, after that I had a perfect fitting pair of boots.

Home or in resort is tricky, resort will be more expensive most of the time if you are a punter. If you are going for 2 weeks I think it would be worth it as you would have time to get them sorted if you have an issue.

Profeet in London are very good too but it wont be the cheapest option.

Yep I wear on and had a big smash were I broke my collar bone and smacked my head at the same time. Saw stars and nearly passed out even with the helmet on. Would probably have hurt more if I was not wearing it :-)

I noticed the other day you can get a hat with D30 armour in it, did make me chuckle. I think I would want a hard shell if skiing off piste with rocks about etc.

Off for two weeks from the 23rd of December :-) cant wait :-)

The Wireless card readers which many places use are the most common culprit, someone sits within range of the signal with a laptop, a receiver and a decoder and uplifts the electronic signature of your card and pin-number, the business owner wont know a thing about it; the days of ‘casual-labour’ cloning your card are much less common now as we all keep an eye on our cards and don’t let staff wander off to swipe them. Bad luck dj, I had a similar event but fortunately it was on a much lesser scale that yours.

Can you point to any evidence, that this type of attack is possible or indeed happening outside a research lab ?

I had 5K lifted via electronic online transfer from my credit card this month, all sorted though and not uncommon apparently.

I have M4’s on my other bikes and new saints on my DH bikes.

    Both are fantastic !!!

However I biffed up a leaver on the saints and to fix it requires buying a whole new lever assembly rather than replacing the broken part as I would do with the hopes.

For this reason if I was choosing the brakes for the bike rather than taking what came on the bike I would have gone for V2’s

Tignes and Val D’Isere Is a fantastic Ski/Boarding area. Lots of pistes and lots of off piste. Pretty much something for everyone from lower intermediate to experts, probably not ideal for complete beginners.

Tignes Les Brevieres will be very expensive to eat out, very nice though and a nice lunch spot.

I was the same had a quad core full on PC running all the time as a server and it was just too noisy and consumed way too much power.

I pre ordered a Guru plug and waited, but it was very late and then there were issues with over heating so I cancelled my order.

I then bought a Netgear Stora, which uses the same Marvel Arm based processor as the Guru, except its got room for 2 SATA disks in the box.

With a £4 serial cable you can get access to the bootloader and installing your own linux is prety easy. I bought mine for £49.99 including a 500gb hard drive offer (you have to send away for it though) OK you will want bigger disks but the 500gb is free :-)

So now I have a Stora running debian.

Cheer guys – looks like I made the right choice – it’s sitting under my desk right now, cant wait to plug it in. Bloody bargain @ £199 too!

Did you get it for £200 or was it £200 with a cash back deal ?

I’m considering trying to hack my media hub thing now.

Which one have you got Mols ?

I have hacked my Netgear Stora, its now running debian linux.

For £50 including a free 500G disk it was dead cheap and a lot lower power than the PC it replaces.

The breakdown of family units has nothing to do with marriage, religion or tax breaks to the married and everything to do with a change in the moral value’s of society.

Agree totally and its a shame, some couples if they could only get over short term problems would be able to live happily ever after for the rest of there lives if they didn’t give up.

Funny thing is I am not and will not get married, I think its a load of pseudo religous hokus pokus, yet sooo many get married who have no religious belief to back it up. Its become a meaningless aim in life.

Not strictly just religious it is a legal framework too, but I agree a lot of people get married in church who are non religious.

One of the good things about a gym is you can mix it up a bit. You don’t just have to do strength or cardio training you can do both :-)

I do a lower intensity work out one day.
    30mins Cross trainer
    30mins treadmill
20mins Ergo rower (will take this to 30mins soon)

Weights day, This is important as it can build strength and this is not only good for power, hut helps to prevent injury when riding/sking etc

    Intervals day (killer day)
    Warm up
3minute ergo row sprint fast as you can
1minute rest (or heart rate reduced to certain value)
    repeat until you die

I rotate this with some rest days/social rides in between.

The original question was “Torture – is it ever justified?”

    Take this scenario

Your wife and children have been taken by a group of people you catch one of them as they are leaving. The person you have captured laughs at you and tells you his friends are going to kill your wife and family in 3hrs time. Would you get the drill out to persuade him to tell you where they have taken your wife and children, or would you stand by the fact torture is never ever justified ?

I like the bit where NO skiers will sit next to you on a chair as they expect to be wiped out when you get off ?

I like the bit where intermediate (snow)borders have to go on a certain side of a lift :-)

Yep live an let live, I know some real good borders and love riding with them (on my skis :-) )

Second hand Patriot frame, with something like Lyriks or 36’s

I have just sold mine and until I got my Sunday I used it for everything from local rides to Whistler bike park. Lots of Cwmcarn uplift days etc.

Was OK on all day rides too, bit heavier than some long travel bikes, but the build was strong, no point have a flimsy set of wheels on a 6″ travel bike.

I can see how uni’s are more expensive to run than schools but not too the magnitude that the difference in funding suggests.

Well they actually allow people to do science etc instead of just talking about it. The consumables cost for some courses is going to be way higher than anything in a school. Where as most of the cost of running a school is in wages, I suspect a university has significant other costs.

The school where my wifes works does not allow teachers to do photo copying FFS !!!

So can I be a Software Engineer then?

Well you can call yourself one and no one will arrest you :-)

Can you get a job as one will depend on if you can get an interview and then convince people you can do the job :-)

Edited to add, you probably would not be the worst person I have interviewed :-)

Staff to student ratios are much lower in schools than they are at Universities, so why on earth do Uni’s need so much more cash?

Do you have facilities for studying and research into Nano Science at your school ?

you’d be shocked at the level of understanding of systems by some of the chartered and hugely qualified staff

    Believe me I wouldn’t :-)

One of the best software “Engineers” I know does not have a degree. I also know some shocking ones with Phd’s :-)

    engineer you’re a technician

I don’t think it really matters, I would take a 100K software technician job over a 50K software engineer one :-)

As you have correctly pointed out there is no legal meaning to the term engineer in this country.

The old Doctors not having a Phd thing !!!

See I don’t really care what people call me as long as they pay me for my skills.

I don’t worry about if my neighbours think I am part of a profession or not. If I am honest I don’t think I am its a career/job not a calling :-)

I would have thought the industries where professional qualifications are important is mainly down to getting someone to insure you :-)

But that said me trimming my hedges does not make me a tree surgeon :-)

There you go, from the oxford english dictionary. You do not have to be sat at a PC all day to be an engineer, this chartership talk is nonsense. The above is the only actual FACT about this matter on the whole thread. Engineer is a job title not a status.

Totaly agree with but it still involves doing some engineering, else I could call my self a tree surgeon even though I go no where near a tree.

I am not so precious at all about the whole charted thing, I watched someone who was totally incompetent sail through the chartering process with the IEEE.

If for instance you were designing a seat stay for a bike, if you could do the calcs to ensure it was stiff enough and strong enough then you are an engineer. If you know what will be strong and stiff enough because someone told you or you just copy something else, your not.

    Simple :-)

Bristolbiker, customer(internal) comes to me tells me that they want a gizmo to do xy and z, I do everything execpt apply for the patent.

But do you go through the processes bristolbiker describes or do you wing it ? do you and could you justify the design decisions you make with sold engineering principles ? That is the difference between a technician and an Engineer.

the extra money to make up for the cuts in uni funding will come from higher earners.

The more I read about this the more I realise its a tax by the back door.

What if you never expected to pay off your mortgage, and the amount left to repay would be written off after 30 years?

I am guessing the government have done the sums and this ends up with them netting more cash in the long run !!!

Check your next payslip, and it should say?

Mine was paid off 10 years ago, but no where near as large as some of the debts younger people will have to pay off.

I was lucky enough not to have to pay fees and still had a small maintenance grant topped up by a student loan.

Also is it 10% before tax that gets paid to the loan company ?

What I mean is do you get tax relief on the repayments.

so earn 30K pay £900 to loan company get taxed on £29100.

Is this new system not a graduate tax by another name ? You can only bay the 10% of salary over a certain amount so unless you earn really big bucks you will never pay it off so you will be paying 10% extra on earnings over 21K for 30 years. Sounds like a tax to me.

I am a software engineer (yes I am charted too for what that is worth) I specialise mostly in embedded software. I take it most of the engineers who are saying they don’t earn more than 30K are mechanical engineers ? Most if not all of the Software and electronic engineers I know ear a fair bit in excess of that. I know I live in the south where the roads are paved with gold.
