If its purely for the snow and lack of crowds then Kicking Horse gets my vote too.

If you have some batteries for night riding, buy a car charger and bodge it on to your light battery.

Thats what I am doing for using the GPS on my phone for road rides.

Yep will be a 66 if its got the shock shuttle and 215mm shock, though I think they dropped the 66 branding at the end of the patriots life.

Sure I bought mine in 04 but it was an 05 bike if you know what I mean. Or was it 05 and an 06 bike :-)

If its the frame with the adjustable shock shuttle it needs a 215mm shock in long travel mode (standard). You can get another shock shuttle that reduces the travel and as kaesae says requires a 190mm shock.

I have an osprey Switch 26 for skiing and its great. Very versatile with helmet pocket and easy access lap strap pocket. It also has dry wet compartments. Nice bag and fits well as it comes in 3 different lengths depending on how long your back is.

Only criticism with it is as I drink from the bladder and the volume drops I have to re tighten the straps. Don’t have to do that on the wingnut I use on the bike.

I think “you” should insist on being properly insured! (not you personally bazzer)

I am insured but I can see why some people might take the view that their liability is limited so why bother.

Some customers (generally bigger organisations) have a problem hiring sole traders. This is because if the sole trader does not pay their national insurance HMRC can come after the customer for this. This is not the case with providing a service through a Ltd company.

Don’t forget the limited liability is not just down to borrowing money. It can also limit your exposure to damages arising from work going wrong etc because of this some customers might insist on you being properly insured.

Bazzer thats one of my favourites too, lovely

Ultimately rich or poor our dreams are our most valuable assets !!

    My favourite.

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
    But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
    I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Unless it’s in a .doc or .docx file… Still worth a grep though.

Yep good point, but like you say worth a grep or getting a hex editor out :-)

If you know someone who is a bit linux aware you could recover any text fairly easily if its still on the disk.

I would as someone mentioned earlier use the dd tool to make a sector by sector copy of the disk into a file on another disk. So basically you will have 1 file with the whole contents of the disk in it. You can then search the file for keywords to find where stuff is. Only issue is depending for fragmented your disk was it may be all over this disk in the wrong order etc. Depending on the filesystem type you may be able to automate the putting it back in order etc.

The amount of damage to the data structures that manage the filesystem will depend on how automatic or manual the process will be.

If none of that makes any sense then get professional help to recover it if the data is valuable :-)

Is there a tangible difference between cores hosted on the same chip and on different chips?

I guess there could be tighter use of sharing of L2 caches with them all on the same die. Putting the shared cache off die has got to be slower.

In the real world who knows :-)

I am with Hiscox its £47 a month and is indemnity, liability and employee (I am the only employee but legally I think I still need it)

I had specific requirements placed on my by a client, so you might get it cheaper than this.

There are some pretty good routers that support openWRT for under £100 in fact come of the buffalo ones have it as standard firmware.

Or if your current router is supported flash openwrt firmware on it and use openVPN with that.

I have used OpenVpn with Ipcop and the OpenVpn add in.

Had a small fanless box running Ipcop as firewall and VPN gateway. All free and worked great.

4 out of 4 I finished building the Hustler on Saturday (had frame since October)

Would probably have to wash the mud off the downhill bike for that to work but, it is all in one piece :-)

    Slight thread hijak.

I am thinking of getting another bike for a bit of commuting, fun and maybe a bit of touring.

Last bike was an R6 and I had a ZX9R before that. Got rid of R6 as was not using it and wife thought it was dangerous so got rid of it to please her. Now don’t have that problem so thinking about getting another. Think I am going to look at the new Fazer 1000 today. I hired a VFR800 and did some touring in the alps a couple of years ago and the comfort persuaded me I don’t want another sports bike.

So Should I and if I do what should I buy :-)

Just sold my race car (turbo Hayabusa powered 7) so have cash and hole in garage :-)

I can MIG weld OK, but would not weld a suspension component. Was happy putting brackets on things to hold bodywork etc on my race car. If I needed suspension stuff done I got a mate who is a professional welder to do it.

Advice on the welder though, don’t go for a cheap gasless one. Tell the guys in machine mart the thickness of metal you want to weld and they will recommend how much power you will need.

Edited to add, I love my automatic welding mask. Nothing worse than doing the perfect weld 10mm away from where you wanted it :-)

Helicoil it if there is enough material to drill and tap for the insert. The thread will then be steel and stronger than original.

You can buy a kit with the inserts drill and correct tap. I have done it a couple of times on ali parts on my old race car.

If if they are going on a Heckler then I assume he will not want a 150mm rear hub.

I have a pair of 823’s on PRO II that were on my Patriot and did lots of Cwmcarn Aston hill days etc as well as loads of trips away including Whistler and Morzine etc. I have rebuilt the rear on a 150mm Pro II and they are now on my Sunday. They have been faultless, though I am not particularly hard on wheels, that said I did knacker a rear MTX31 rim on the Sunday when I first got it.

As a beginner tracky bottoms are not going to be ideal when you fall over and get them wet !!!

If you have mates who ski borrowing gear can be the best bet for your first time.

This time of year weather can be like a hot summers day in the UK or it can be hammering it down with snow and cold. Layers are the key.

I wear a combination of a HH base merino layer that I use for winter bike riding too, micro fleece if its cold and a breathable shell jacket with no padding. If its really cold I might put on a layer underneath the micro fleece but this is really rare. Wear a pair of salopettes and sometimes long johns underneath if its really cold.

So layers are the key :-)

It’s also not the case anymore in Windows with UAC, I believe bazzer. It’s also always been possible to set up Windows with a separate admin account, just no-one bothered to

Yep you are correct and I expect virus infections would go down if people didnt just blindly press yes when a UAC box popped up :-)

    Edited to add
One of the reasons for this is because it pops up so often under windows for various reasons.

    bazzer

One of the reasons windows was more prone to virus attacks in the past is because the user ran with super user privileges. This meant a user could click on somthing and have permission to do nasty things.

This is generaly not the case in a unix/linux based system, which I believe OSX is based on.

His data sets were perfect and there is some conjecture as to whether he fudged them or not. It was like once he realised what the results should look like, he decided to ignore ones that were slightly off and only present the perfect ones.

EDIT : And as I recall, when discussing the theory of evolution in our biology lessons, we were taught of the pioneering work of Gregor Mendel. Gregor Mendel studied genetics in relation to evolution ….. particularly plant evolution. He lived in the 19th century and happened to be a catholic monk.

Yes and who fixed his results to give what he thought should be the correct answer :-) Clever bloke though :-)

What do you mean “at last” ? And it is perfectly “cut and dry” ……the catholic church fully supports the theory of evolution. That’s how I learnt about theory of evolution …….in science classes in catholic schools. It’s pretty clear cut to me

Was it not Pope John Paul II in 1996 that clarified the position ? Thats what I meant when I said about time. I could be wrong though I am not a Vatican historian.

(So maybe I should stick to the science bit :-) )

    bazzer

The Pope supports the theory of evolution and all catholic schools teach evolution in their science classes. Sorry to be pedantic, but such sloppiness mildly irritates me …….if you are going to attack people for opposing the theory of evolution, then at least attack the right people

Officially the Vatican has at last accepted evolution, but some of the things Pope Benedict XVI has said would indicate he thinks otherwise. So not entirely cut and dry.

No. Scientists do a pretty good job of that. I’m just your average idiot … I’m just unconvinced that a series of accidents could result in what we observe around us.

So basically choosing a hunch vs experimental observation based science. As long we know where your coming from thats fine :-)

Would I be correct in thinking that the main reason you dismiss evolution is it does not fit well with a doctrine you believe in rather than you have analysed the facts and decided they don’t make sense.

Read “The Blind Watchmaker” and see if it answers some of your questions. I know Dawkins can be a bit annoying but he does set out a very persuasive case for evolution.

Give yourself a chance to look for the truth :-)

I think us on the pro evolution/Natural selection side are still waiting for one scrap of evidence that the theory is even slightly shaky let alone has holes in it big enough to drive a bus through.

Its one of the most incredible bits of science ever. Remember Darwin never new about DNA when he wrote the The Origin of Species. Would be amazing to show him the results of the human genome project and show him the mechanism his theory depends on. Say look old chap you were right :-)

    bazzer

No, it’s because the theory of evolution isn’t good enough to convince me.

What bits of evolution do you find unconvincing ?

I’m more convinced by ‘intelligent design’ because stuff in the Universe and on Earth and what-not all seems to fit too well together to be the result of a fluke/accident

Can you explain this in an evidence based scientific way ?
