Look deeply at your reasons for doing a trip like this. Make sure you are doing it for the right reasons. Think of the impact it might have on those that are close to you.

If you still think its what you want to do, then make it happen. Life is too short not to follow your dreams.

Do you have this in a bog standard PC or have you done anything else to make it electrically quiet. Are the silences free of artefacts?

I really am interested by the way and I am not Trolling.

depending on the quality of soundcard and the engineering behind it this is not the case – check out the old Lynx Two card review in a pro mag:

Its not just down to the quality of the sound card though its down to the quality of the PC as well. If you have the analogue stage inside the PC case it will be subject to the noise from the PC no matter how clever you are with the screening and filtering. Its a compromise from the start.

Its a bit like a 911 Porsche have solved the problem but they have made it hard for themselves :-)

You are right about audio sources ripped to hard disk, probably the best source you can have.

I am not saying you can’t get great results with a setup like this but if you want it to be really good its not quite as simple as banging a high quality sound card in any old PC.

why would that be then – Mr Woppit?

I will answer for him if that’s OK main reason would be electrical noise generated by the PC. Even though it has to pass EMC emissions tests to get CE marked its still not going to be as electrically quiet as something that is designed to be quiet. You could use it with an external DAC I suppose that would give better performance. Also in the past the error detect/correction strategies were not as good in cheaper. Also the quality of the transport (disk spinny thing and laser etc) would mean more bit errors in the first place.

But ….. Probably would sound good enough for 90% of us :-)

I’ve been far too drunk on far too many occasions, yet somehow I’ve managed to avoid bottling someone, getting someone pregnant, copping off with a bloke, or being arrested. Wonder why that is? Ah, yes, it’s because I’m not a sociopath to start with.

Or not very attractive, sorry could not resist :-)

Brilliant film, amazing how you can watch the same footage with hindsight and it seem very different.

The footage of him at Imola in his car before the race is very different when it has sad music over the top rather than Murray talking. It reminded me why I used to like watching F1 !!!

There are lots of places where over taking on double white lines on a motorcycle is as safe as houses. Police still don’t seem to take too kindly to it though.

I must admit I tend to respect them in the car even with over taking cyclists, but then again I am probably more considerate being that I am often on the receiving end of close calls from cars on the bike. I do a bit of road biking these days and you can control the cars a little bit with road position.

Nope – adopting the empty streets would reduce casualties dramatically as would assumed liability

At what cost though ? and I don’t mean just financially.

2009 there were 109 cyclists killed when I did a quick search. Lets say a 20% of them did something stupid leaving 82 ish people being killed due to the fault of the driver.

Is it really worth tackling this when there are other things which kill far more people ?

    Its a tiny problem !!!

Like others here I ride a bike on the road, a motorcycle and drive a car.

Don’t feel like I am entering death race 2000 every time I go out on the road. In general the level of driving is pretty good in this country.

To get much safer would mean either not riding bikes on the road or not driving cars on the road.

As people have eluded to, there are other things that kill more people that we should concentrate on first.

Its really not that bad in the real world people :-)

Could be the indicator switch thing – on many BMWs its perfectly possible to sound the horn instead of cancelling the indicators

I hired a R1200GS for ten days touring in the Alps. Whilst the indicator switches are strange compared to other bikes, I never hit the horn by mistake once :-)

I would have liked the indicator system more if the cancel button was not on the throttle side !!!

But they are still trying to repair it.

For Six months !!!! Is that really acceptable ?

But that’s not the point is it, its the fact they have not been able to repair it ? I agree if he has given it to them to repair and everything was great and it worked fine. He has given them the opportunity to repair it a couple of time and they have not done so.

I agree if they COULD repair it then they don’t need to replace it but if they cant they should as I bet the T&C’s don’t say we will try and repair it and if we cant tough titties !!

why should they provide you with a brand new machine?

Because they took his money for the support contact to guarantee him peace of mind and a working Mac Book for 3 years. If they cant provide that service by fixing it they should give him a new one. He bought an insurance policy from them they should honour it or not take his money in the first place.

“Hi hows it going, thank god its Friday.”

Followed by “got anything fun planned for the weekend ?”

Listen to her, she may then say yes I am going to the pictures/drink with my boyfriend etc

Or she may tell you about the things she likes doing at the weekend which will give you something to talk about next week.

I have a pair of K2 Apache Recons which are a few years old they get used on piste. The new K2 charger is similar but has rocker technology and they are good.

Last year I treated myself to a new pair of powder skis and bought some Line “Sir Francis Bacons” they are 115mm under foot but are not too deadly edge to edge on piste and they are awesome off piste.

I am about 13.5stone 5’11 and I am an OK skier not brilliant but not crap. I used to ski about 5 weeks a year then I did a season in Val D’isere 2 years ago where I got in 90 days skiing.

I am quite happy with the above skis.

So why exactly should earnings from investment be taxed differently to earnings from employment?

They are not, if they are earned in this country and qualify for taxation in this country.

I found an envelope in the Gym carpark a few years ago with £400 in it and a thank you letter.

I found out who it belonged too and gave it back, they were so pleased and surprised. I think if they had lost it, it would have ruined their Christmas more than it would have made mine better.

To be honest I would try not to be in the area of the rioting to start with and if I was I would be trying to get out of the area ASAP.

So would walk straight past and focus on trying to get away from it all like any sensible person would.

I used to be really into cars. Had a fair few quick machines culminating in a really really powerful very light Westfield that I used for track days.

I just realised on day that it was just not doing it for me anymore. Now I would rather have something comfy thats fast enough to make progress.

After a few years off motorbike I am back into that now and I love it. I find myself drawn to lots of bikes I want to ride in a way I don’t with cars anymore.

I am off to do a 10day motorcycle tour in France in a couple of weeks taking in the Millau sky bridge then off up to the Alps. I am more excited about this than I have been about anything in a number of years :-)

    He is wrong

The greater electrical load you put on the alternator the greater the mechanical load it will put on the engine and thus your fuel tank.

In a Prius however if he plugged it in while braking, maybe :-)

Hope you manage to escape without a plate.

Best of luck, don’t rush recovery?

Mine is fine now (well I have a big lump still)it was about 5 years ago now, no plate and it healed fairly quickly. Still aches a bit now and then.

Skied two runs and took two chairlifts to get back when I did mine.

It was stupid and very nearly came through the skin. Had I fallen again or jarred it I could have been looking at an open fracture.

Was suitably told off by doctor.

Meh, that didn’t go so well.

Not only has my brain rotted a bit in two years of faffing about with stupid rubbish project in rubbish companies, but I’ve not been using technologies and learning. Bugger.. I feel like a right noob now

As a contractor never let yourself get institutionalised somewhere, I was with the same client for 13 years I bricked myself when that came to an end. Been changing every 12-18 months now and I now longer fear the change.

What sort of stuff did they want ? If I remember correctly your a Java man aren’t you ?

Another big thumbs up for Andy Walsh at CarLimits, airfield day was essential when I first had my Elise, learnt a lot

Did you do the thing where you come flying onto the main runway from the side and try and turn in and get loads of under-steer, then come in and turn in on the brakes and see the understeer go away ?

With sticky A032R’s on the 7 I had to go further up the escape road to get enough speed to get understeer, to the point it was quite scary knowing you were going to slide at 95MPH plus :-)

Bazzer – damn right there’s truth in what I say I’m not seeking to change the laws of physics, just apply them properly

Well I was going to bow out. The only truth in what you were saying is about tyres deforming so thus the contact patch changes with load so hence so its not as simple as( force = contactPatch x coef of friction) as the contact patch can change due to load.

But just throwing random facts about does not prove your case.

Why not explain why all this means I am wrong rather than just trying to blind me with science.

I think the winding more lock on method is just a ‘cross-your-fingers’ approach to getting round a corner

    Exactly

I do have practical experience of this as well, doing it wrong before I new better meant I hit the tyre wall at Castle Coombe on Quarry bend at about 60MPH.

Learning what works had kept me off the tyre wall since.
