K Series head gasket failures were generally thought to be down to the plastic dowel pins they used in the head/block. They used plastic as they decided it was less likely to nick the head gasket during manufacture. However the plastic pins allowed the head to latterly float on the head and this lead to gasket failures. Replacing the gasket and using metal dowels should be a permanent fix.

Once again this all comes down to education. Most people have no idea what they are voting for – even those who actually make an effort which is a pretty small segment.

OMG I agree with Molgrips, this is a new and scary experience for me :)

We have exactly what anyone who did a bit of due diligence would have expected from the way recent votes have gone.

Unfortunately when we needed a strong opposition they missed an open goal by choosing an unelectable leader and not suitably differentiating the party from the conservative party on the hot issue of the day (brexit)

“Furthermore whilst I am fairly relaxed about the baker being primarily profit motivated when solving my bread buying issues I am somewhat less relaxed about a healthcare provider being primarily profit motivated when solving my medical issues.”

    Yay thats a bit better.

You do know what you want though, you want the best medical outcome for yourself.

“I am somewhat less relaxed about a healthcare provider being primarily profit motivated when solving my medical issues.” – So you prefer it to be motivated by your GP not being able to offer the best possible treatment because its not available due to lack of resources?

I am not saying that OOB has all the answers, I am just saying that the almost religious defence of the NHS in its current form is not helping fixing it.

I am saying I don’t want a system where people on benefits and limited income get a crap service.

At the moment you can’t even get a GP appointment in a reasonable time. It’s broken and I think its beyond just pouring more money in.

    “And retention?”

I would argue getting rid of pay banding and allowing people to negotiate what they are worth would go a long way to fix that.

“Those I know understand that understaffing leads directly to worse care for patients. Continual lowering real wage levels does nothing to help with recruitment and retention of staff.”

Then strike for incentives for subsidising training and increased pay for newly qualified personnel.

    Edited to add

Or just be honest and say that they feel that their skill levels are worth more than they are currently paid and the fact the NHS is a monopoly employer prevents their wages from being driven by the the shortage of highly skilled people in their profession.

“No it’s a ridiculous comparison, On too many levels to even discuss.” – I can only infer from that you have no argument against his position. That’s OK Just easier to say that though.

The nurses and ambulance drivers are striking for more pay, not better care for patients lets be clear on this. They could go on strike until something was done on providing social care, so that beds could be freed. They are not, so lets get that straight. I am not saying that they don’t deserve a pay rise, I am saying the narrative that it’s for patient care is disingenuous. Again this is not saying that they don’t have sympathy and care for patients in general, just that its not why they are on the picket line.

“Don’t want to feed the troll.” – I don’t think he is actually trolling, rather pointing out that if you are getting poor service from the NHS there is nothing you can do other than complain and we’d not accept that with other services let along one as important as health care.

“If you can’t pay you’re happy that’s it’s your decision. Does that need explaining?” – Yes because you are missing out the important part about the government providing a base level payment into an insurance backed scheme. If this level was set correctly then its not a problem. So yeah it does warrant some level of discussion.

“I would agree only it is difficult to have a rational discussion with someone who is comparing the National Health Service with owning a bike or buying a loaf of bread.” – No its not it’s a metaphor, the point is you would not put up with it buying bread or bikes, so WHY should you put up with it for something as important as health care.

“Where would you start, and why would you even bother?” – Where to start? discuss insurance backed health care with partial government funding. Why? because the NHS is failing and we need a solution so everyone can get better health care.

    @BillMC and @anagallis_arvensis

Any chance of some rational argument as to why its “Utter crap” or “bobbins” ?

Lets have some discussion for a change rather than just reinforcement in the STW echo chamber.

Put a sign up, and go and talk to your neighbours, tell them you don’t mind them parking there and tell them the rules for doing so and tell them the sign is to stop random people parking there.

They will be reminded it’s not a free for all but won’t think you are being a knob.

I have replaced one of those Clarke/Machine Mart welders with the power switches (had it over 20years) with a new 180A R-Tech welder. It’s amazing it’s made me a better welder, just being able do set the power with a dial rather than with pre-set switches makes it so much easier.

    Love mine.

Edited to add that Blackline 200A welder looks really good for the money.

“A bog standard cat5e ethernet cable is good for runs of up to 100m – the easiest solution would be to place the pc in a different room to the workshop/CNC machine. Take the PC away from the dust rather than having it in a dusty environment and sttempting to prevent dust ingress.”

You really need it next to the machine. You might need to jog it about, see what’s needed for tool changes etc.

What motion controller board are you using?

I use and old i7 laptop that is about 10 years old and it’s fine. So I would imagine any modern i5 or above would not struggle.

I use a UC400ETH controller with Mach3 but I am going to make the switch from Mach3 to UCCNC as it just is still developed and is more modern in its control.

Weirdly as I am really a rock/metal guy, the albums that really stick in my mind from the 90s and take me back are

    Alanis Morissette, Jagged Little Pill
    Air, Moon Safari
    Sarah McLachlan, Surfacing

Albums that influenced my musical taste most
    Metalica, Metalica
Smashing Pumpkin, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
    Nirvana, Nevermind
    Depeche Mode, Violator

The mix of electronic and rock attitude meant, when I heard Music for the Jilted Generation I was hooked.

So, so, so much good music.

I have had a Helix floor for a couple of years now. Initially I was not mega impressed. Once you get past the presets though its brilliant. It took me a while to get to grips with it but now I have, I have no desire to go back to an real amp. I either run it through my studio monitors or a Headrush FRFR speaker.

I do have guitar rig 6 and helix native too (I record using Logic Pro) and when I first got the Helix I could get better sounds from Guitar Rig. Now I much prefer the Helix. Helix native pretty much sounds the same as the real hardware.

I built a Hayabusa powered Westfield in a single garage. It was perfectly doable.

I had a great time and made lots of friends through it. I rarely drove it on the road and it was mainly a track car. It was a money pit due to upgraditus. It ended up turbo charged with a massive spec. Loved it though and made friends for life through it.

I would say do DAS in the most expedient way possible, buy a bike and then ride it as much as possible and do some training with one of the organisations like ROSPA or IAM.

The fact you drive will be a major advantage over a 17year old who doesn’t have any road craft/knowledge.

Take it easy let the experience and confidence come to you and don’t chase it. Don’t try and keep up with anyone more experienced/faster and you will be golden. You will be rubbish for a while, don’t let that put you off, its a brilliant and fun thing to do.

I just re-read you initial post, I thought you had bought a 3.5mm jack to midi din convertor.

Unless the USB device is a host USB device that sort of pretends to be a computer it won’t work.

As others have said it should work if you go via a computer

Should work, are you sending MIDI data out on the casio on the same channel as the Korg is expecting to see it?

I have an MSR windburner and it’s great. It would be good if it had a piezo lighter, but to be honest they have a tendency to fail anyway. Other than that can’t fault it.

I did this recently to a concrete garage, but not cheep though.

I battened the walls, then screwed 12mm ply with 50mm kingspan behind. It’s totally transformed the space.

    It’s now my workshop.

@boxwithawindow has a point, if you can afford it skip the 125 and just do DAS now and buy a bigger bike. Easier to ride and more likely not to fall apart.

As many have said if you do enjoy it and do you direct access next year you will buy new kit as you work out what you really like. Decent CE marked kit is not cheap so initially I would just get some cheap branded gloves that fit well.

I used to buy goretex waterproof gloves, but decided that even though they were meant to breath my hands sweated and I ended up with stinky gloves. So not I don’t bother and just turn the heated grips on. I do have a pair of heated gloves as well if it gets really cold. I am also a total convert to heated clothing. Its like having the sun on your back. So much so I have to remind myself that the tarmac is not 40deg and sticky :-) All this is way down the line for you though. Get CBT, get bike, ride and enjoy and don’t over complicate it at this point.

I am excited as it’s new bike day for me, I pick up a new KTM 1290 Super Adventure S this afternoon. First day of rain in weeks too, just to annoy me :-)

I have an Inreach Mini, chosen over a spot mainly because it can be used to message in a non emergency scenario if needed.

I go greenlining on the Enduro bike in Wales and quite often there is no phone coverage. So I always tell the people I ride with where it is and how to trigger an SOS.

Luckily not had to use it in anger.

I totally understand how you feel. I trained and raced Ironman/Tri for a number of years. Generally loved the training but everything else in my life suffered because of it.

Last race was Ironman Austria about 3 years ago and am not sure if I have been out on my road bike since. (anyone want a Cervelo P3 Di2) I now run for fitness and fun, though find it odd to go out the door with no real plan. I ride Enduro Motorbike and do a bit of mountain biking which I have realised I really missed.

I was mid pack at races and realised I hated the stress of travelling worrying I had forgotten anything. I only really relaxed once I hit the water, then I knew there was nothing I could do if I had forgotten something in transition.

I miss the discipline of training, not the stress of racing.

I also like being able to do stuff spontaneously without feeling guilty about missing training.

I have recently converted one of my garages into a workshop. I used Bug Dug interlocking tiles. Really impressed with them and they add a layer of under foot insulation.

    Not cheapest but pretty good.

The other way to learn whole songs is to record them.

Use something like Garageband or I am sure there are some free DAW’s for PC’s too. Add some drums and a bass line etc.

I started doing it just to give me something to play along with, now I love it and see it as a big part of playing for me. I love recording stuff and I have even written some of my own stuff for fun.

I have been enjoying the new Helix SW release this week, some really nice reverbs and a some nice new amps. The synth sounds are also quite interesting.

I have been mainly recording a cover of Lil Devil by the Cult at I wanted to learn the Solo so I ended up recording all of it with a bass etc. I used the Bandok amp for that :-)

    Love it :)

All these proposals seem extremely regressive and will impact the poor disproportionally.

Strange as the ones calling for changes seem to be the ones who are normally trying to show they have a high level of empathy for those less well off :-)

The problem with being woke is someone always gets the arse end of your idea. Soon people will be disappearing in a wokey paradox vortex :)

What does RAID actually give you?

It gives you high availability, if a drive dies you can still carry on working until you replace it. Obviously you are at a higher risk of data loss until the drive is replaced and the array is rebuilt, this risk is covered by your backup though. It can also give you faster read speeds if your data is stripped across several disks. But apart from that what did the romans ever do for us :-)

I have a mix of RAID5 and mirrored arrays in my home office and I backup offsite using Crashplan Pro. I have a disk down in one of the RAID5 arrays at the moment (it is backed up too) and I can just keep using it without having to worry about restoring it etc from crashplan over the internet.

So for some people RAID is very useful.
