I could be up for heading along. Would be leaving from Gogarburn/Gyle side but have no motor – anyone driving from round there?

I'm printing out posters tomorrow and will be showing my disapproval just after he arrives in Edinburgh.

If he was here on a regular visit and not using taxpayer money then I wouldn't have a problem with it, more mild amusement. The fact that it is classified as a visit from a head of state when that state only exists for tax purposes that really bugs me. Otherwise people can bow down to whatever imaginary being they like.

I use jsymphonic which works through Java so should run on most platforms.

Need to get a new battery for mine actually. Twinned with some Sennheiser HD202 it sounds great.

TTC on the Big Dada label are probably the most famous in the UK. Batards Sensibles is well worth checking out.

I might join you Kit if the offer's still open. Might be at Glentress tomorrow so Thursday would be good for me.

I'm able to post this today because I wore a helmet when cycling along the Union Canal one month ago. Over handlebars at speed directly onto the top right of my head, didn't even have time to let go of the handlebars. Four stitches above my right eye and lots of bruising but my skull would have been fractured without the helmet.

Just thinking about how hard my helmet encased head hit the ground sends shivers down my spine.

I sometimes took my helmet off when on that canal but for some reason that day I didn't.

Bruxism is the proper term for it. Used to do it but don't think I do any more. No idea what caused me to do it.

The main benefit of the BBC is that it doesn't need money from advertisers to run and therefore should be less biased than other broadcasters. I hate adverts and avoid them whenever possible so only really ever watch BBC channels. Films, box sets and the occasional BBC documentary are enough for me. Don't mind the licence fee as I use their web services a lot.

religion should have an 18 certificate rating on it anyway.

I don't need Ramadan to know not to swallow swimming pool water!

PS3 media server streams anything from your computer to the PS3 and it's easy to set-up. Can't comment on the XBOX as I've never owned one but I'm happy with my PS3. Mine is used 70% for media and 30% for games.

Can't make Wednesday unfortunately. Could be up for Pentlands tonight though – 6pm Bonaly?

There's a guy at Gogarburn on a Kona HT who I see leaving with leg armour on, don't know if he wears it on his way in. Always meant to ask where he was heading to.

Any Gyle dwellers fancy heading to the Pentlands one night next week?

I just bought a P7 from DealExtreme, seems well made but I haven't had it out for a proper test yet. Can't imagine that a light costing four times the 70gbp of the P7 will give four times the performance.

It has certainly been designed as a bike light, robdeanhove maybe you're thinking of some other product. This is the one I bought.

evening all, sorry for the slight hijack but is anyone up for an earlier start? Could be at Bonaly around 1745-1800. Looked like you had too many last week anyway 🙂

seems fairly reasonable to me. In my experience Rackspace are expensive but very good. Don't go anywhere near Fasthosts – if they're even still going.

Hackney foxes act like they own the place, give them guns and they probably would. I'd walk past them regularly coming back from nights out and they would not be frightened at all. One summers day when the door was open we found a fox curled up in our first floor living room behind the couch and it took banging a pan with a metal spoon to scare it out.

But the news story still sounds dodgy.

They were publicising the http://www.artemishighland100.com/ at my work the other day. Looks like it could be pretty good but it looks like there are quite a lot of road sections.

Just opened a Cragganmore and enjoying it. Actually can't remember a whisky that I haven't liked.

I got the kevlar ones and they are great. Stopping power is good, not much squeal and still perform when extremely hot. They also seem to be wearing well

The Wire is very good, definitely worth watching. I have also enjoyed Six Feet Under and Generation Kill.

None of these are on TV as far as I know but 'available' online.

It was just the worst possible outcome looking at the footage of the crash.

Crazy (with hindsight) that cars would just stop on the main straight to refuel with it being so narrow. Interesting documentary though and enjoyed hearing all the background story.

AlasdairMc, are you heading up earlier? I'd be up for a 6pm or so start as long as I get finished work on time.

Another recommendation here for any of Feynman's books. Also send them this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/feynman/ one of the most entertaining people to listen to.

I also enjoyed a couple of Simon Singh's books, The Big Bang and also Fermat's Last Theorum. Currently reading Why Does e=mc^2 by Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw which is really interesting and very mind bending.

Some Taylor Avocado works a treat when used with a brush.

I started using a double edge safety razor partly because of ingrowing hairs using a Mach3 and partly because of the expense and the way multi-blade razors are marketed, what are they up to now? 6 blades?

Cheers everyone, enjoyed the ride. I'll make sure I have some food with me next time and might make it further up the hill. Most photo sites are blocked at work so will check them out when I get home.

I'm sure I could sort you out with some petrol cash and an ice-cream, druidh. Do you have room for me even though we haven't met?

I'm hoping for a modest pace, this'll be my first decent length ride of the year so go easy!

Looks like a good route and never done any riding out that way.

Cheers everyone, I might be out Stirling way on Sunday so will look into some routes round there.

TJ, as long as it's not the union canal then I might take you up on the offer. I cycle that way to work every day.

I agree, stayed there for a weekend and they were fine, basic as you would expect but perfect for trail access. Take plenty food and beer and there is a bbq so possibly charcoal.

jimmy – 30.9 seatpost, my replacement is sitting in in City Link's 'Edinburgh' depot which is actually in Livingston.

Think I'd need a bit more planning before I could go this evening, working at Gogarburn so that lift from the Gyle would have been perfect. Bike is at home now though.

    Def next time.

would definitely have been up for this but still waiting for a replacement seatpost after breaking mine last week. Next time.

I started off with a dual boot with XP. Now running only Ubuntu 10.04 but have the option to run XP under Sun Virtualbox for when I need to transfer files to my Garmin GPS. Works great.

It was fairly easy to remove the Windows partition but I remember needing a live CD to do it.
