As with all these types of competitions there is a application stage, menu design and submission, heats, quarters, semis and final prior to going on to the ‘British’ part of the competition.
Most chefs are very busy, not all have their own restaurant, nor do they all want to get on the telly. Many are happy with rosettes and stars or just can’t get the time to get away from work. The comps to win are the industry recognised ones as Tom Kitchin has in the past and, as it happens, my cousin’s husband won this year. There is a HUGE amount of work in comps….just to add fuel to the fire…He’s a NZ national :D
Tom Kitchin is actively pursuing a ‘TV chef’ career so he was always going to be in the mix and with his talent it would have been surprising not to see him in the final.
The opportunities are limited and as such the way for up and coming chef’s to make their mark is to start their own place, a very pricey option. The talent is here, the big money isn’t hence the migration south of the border. It’s a shame really. That’s not to say that the food up here is disappointing, far from it!

    Cheers

    Paul.

IMHO ever since that Les geezer from London gave away 250K the rest have all seemed to be miserly in comparison.

I wouldn’t say that was really the case. The scrappy lad for example. When he gave the war veteran the £10k to give to the charity of his choice I think that was one of the best gifts given on the programme.
It’s not all about the zeros on the cheque but the story and how heart felt the donation is imo.
The big money does have the wow factor though.

This is all rather disappointing verging on disgusting. :(
I’m finding it hard to believe the way this thread has gone.

o2 often have refurb’d units as new but in an o2 box. i.e. 18 month contract @ £35 16GB you save more than 1/3.
    Worth a call.

I was in the same position a few weeks ago and it was between the Blackberry Curve and iPhone.
At the o2 shop 2 separate assistants recommended the Curve over the iPhone however that very afternoon the new OS 3.0 was announced which for me leveled out the playing field.
I went for the 16GB iPhone and have thus far been very impressed. Battery life is indeed a fair bit less than the Sony K850i I had previously however once I get home I sync the phone with Outlook for my calendar etc. and charge it that way. Another option that I hadn’t considered is the dock mentioned above. I think I’ll get another one of them today.
If you adjust the brightness and turn the 3G on and off as required it helps the battery life a lot
As a percentage, my actual phone use has been very little. There is soooo much more to do with it.

    Cheers

    Paul.

Oh, there’s also some superstition re. the giving of knives as a gift. Bad luck apparently.

I went through this at Christmas and ended up going for the rosewood handled Victorinox.
    These knives
I had a similar budget and these were recommended to me by a family member who just recently won the Scottish Chef Of The Year award so he knows what he’s on about.
I prefer function over form and for my level of cooking they fit the bill nicely. Get a good ceramic sharpener too such as this.
I was going to go for Wusthof but at the end of the day you have to be realistic about what you need.
There is also a full range of the rose handled stuff so your dad can add to it as and when he wishes without costing him a fortune.

    Cheers

    Paul.

Was one of the better ones and I try to make a point of watching the programme every week.
The guy was still quite ‘real world’ and I think he took as much away from it as anyone.
Not the most money that’s been given away but certainly one of the most moving and sincere imo.

Did you use their recommended repairer?

Don’t accept their first (or indeed second) offer.
If the damage isn’t that heavy then get a price for repair and decide if it is a viable option to buy the write off back off them and get it back on the road (with the appropriate work and paperwork done)

    Ordered mine today.
PC user and not a fan of iTunes at all however having used my brothers iMac and MacBook I really came to like the Apple operating systems. I then had a shot of a mate’s iPod touch and was very impressed.
I went to the o2 store and spoke to two separate assistants who suggested that the BlackBerry Curve would be a better option. I then read the details of the 3.0 upgrade and decided to go for the iPhone anyway.
I will be trying to get to grips with iTunes so as to make as much use of my new toy as I can.
I’m quite looking forward to it.

    That’s a fair run that.
Mid week the road from Blair to Kirkmichael is very quiet. Farm traffic will be your main thing.
If there’s a fall of snow at Glenshee then it can be a bit of a racetrack more so at weekends.

If you are after versatility you’re after I may as well suggest the bike that I went for after test riding most of the other bikes mentioned thus far:

    Bionicon Golden Willow.
Everything is so very adjustable and makes for a comfortable bike for whatever you plan that day.
Worth getting a test if you can manage.

I watched the whole hour and a half of the presentation and made my decision. I was hovering between the Blackberry Curve and the iPhone and this upgrade brings the iPhone to the top of the list.
However with rumours of new hardwear do I hold off? A better camera would be nice but then how long do you hold off?
I have never bothered about Apple products before but my brother has an iMac and an iBook and in turn my mum just purchased an iMac and after a play I’d have to say I am very impressed. The wife and I have iPods but I have to admit to hating iTunes.
I’ve never understood the iHating that goes on with Apple v’s PC or other phone companies as it is now…. I suppose everyone needs a hobby.

I just cannot for the life of me get to grips with iTunes. I have thousands of mp3s on file but iTunes will not take them and won’t name them and so on. I find it such a non user friendly piece of software!
As such I have an 80gb ipod with very few albums on it and one film as I’ve just figured out Handbrake.
I really fancy an iPhone but the one thing that is puting me off is using iTunes with it!

There’ll have been plenty watched that tonight so they could have slated them.
I think those people will be quite disappointed as it looks like they all did their bit. Good on them I say. I gave them my £1 and well worth it in my book.

The cyclescheme hits work. There are a lot of guys buy nice bikes (and Sid buys a hand-me-down) and start to do a lot of riding. After a while they want to try that ‘Laggan’ they’ve heard so much about. Some of them decide to try out their new SPDs.
There’s nothing worse than hearing you making a fanny of yourself on video

    A trip to Laggan

We had the bomb disposal squad in at work the other week and he was saying that it was kicking off big time across there and has been bad for a long time but there has been a big cover up going on.
He was saying that all the weapons being used are the same as those that were prevalent prior to the ‘peace process.’
There is still a lot of crap going on over there but knee capping’s and the likes don’t get headlines. They have been booby-trapping the bombs and are/were desperate to kill an operative to grab a headline and as he said, the press are daft enough to give them maximum exposure to help them on their way.

Seeing as I had nothing better to do this afternoon I thought I’d get in on this:
The one I use at the mo:

The one I used to use that the wife now uses :-)

    All condition road bike:

    Nice day road bike:

This has been relegated to the ‘popping to the shop’ bike:

Oooh I wonder what he’s going to deep fry.

    :D

Well, He thought about deep frying a Wispa but decided against it. He won though!! :D

His sorbet for his starter has melted away to nothing by then. His rabbit main is fantastic and he also won ‘best intermediate’ for his taurine.
3 hours of fookin’ hard work there!
