I can’t thank you guys enough. Being so new to the sport I had no idea what to expect, but from the off I knew that I was in safe hands and all I had to do was keep pedalling and stay upright.
You chaps got me to Brighton, which is nearly six times further than I’ve ever ridden off road. It’s not a patch on what you achieved by doing the last brutal section, but I feel great to have been given a taste of what adventure can be had.

Singletrackmind was the most brilliant guide; he was constantly pointing out the tricky bits for me and if he hadn’t shouted “lean back” I would have been over the bars on a couple of the 30mph sections!
Piha and Mivi also gave me great tips about keeping the power on through the swampy bits and reading a line through the sections that demanded it. The Germinator was a powerhouse up hill on his hardtail and Pschle’s determination was an inspiring thing to behold. I learned heaps being around such confident and experienced riders.

The banter was quality throughout. The group seemed to click and the whole day was great fun.

    Highlights for me were;
Misty dawn light shining through the poppy fields on first ascent from Winch.
The sigh of relief after proving that all our brakes worked on that Very steep bit during our ‘diversion’.
Not getting killed by that early commuter nut job in the Mondeo.
Learning Rob’s trick to squash a Soreen.
Getting to the top of the long climbs without puking.
Getting to the bottom of the slippery descents without losing the front (came too close on three occasions).
The girls at the Park, especially that moody jogger.
The quick pitstops where thousands of calories were consumed and jokes were made about whether Ming The Merciless had ridden through the night successfully or was hugging a tree somewhere like a broken man.
    The views.
The water taps (would have been bad to miss one).
The cheery old walkers who held the gate for us.

Thanks guys. I’ve got the bug now.

    😀

For those that are planning to do this thing, have you agreed a precise start time/place?

I will have limited web access from tonight so could I request that someone e-mails me once a plan is fixed?

I’m really keen to have some company/guidance so I do hope some of you decide to give it a try… 🙄

    I’m in.
Thankfully the forecast of ‘hail’ has changed!

Am getting train from London to Winch on Thursday, staying with my ex-stepmum (mildly odd).
Will peel off a tad early as am kipping with mates in Brighton on Friday night.

This will be my first long MTB ride. Am nervous and excited in equal measure. I’m keen to stay on the wheels of someone who knows the route.

Am thinking of riding my Boardman FS rather than Inbred as I think it might be a bit more comfortable… does that make sense over the distance?

Cheers all… links, chain and gear cable sound like good/light additions. Foil blanket also worth it.
Am doing this ride with the nutty crowd who are going all the way to Eastbourne in one day!
Winch-Brighton is long enough for newbie me. Have a feeling I will be out-paced from the off so wanted to make sure I am self-sufficient.

TON – I will have that saddle bag – I replied to your original post last week but never had a response please mail me:

Hello Newbie! I’m one too, welcome.
You will very quickly discover that this place is pretty odd; it’ll make you laugh way more often that you’d think.
In amongst the madness, you’ll get some brilliantly helpful advice and the classifieds are a good way to get the bits you need.
Sorry – can’t help with forks but seems you’ve got some input there already.
    😉

    Hi LapSteel,

Yep, 54 sounds like your size, but you’ve got long pins for your height. Mine’s 56, you’d be welcome to throw your leg over and try if you’re local.

    Add is here: STW-post Ribble

    Hi LapSteel,

I have a Ribble aluminium road bike with a carbon rear triangle. Full 105 group with carbon post and Shimano 105 semi aero wheelset (tight and true with no bearing play).
Maxxis race tyres + spare set of Conti Ultra Race. Size 56 and in ‘that classic Ribble blue with white decals’.
Super-quick bike that will also do 100 milers without issue.
Very good condition with minimal wear to drive train. STIs in near perfect nick.
    London based, but can post.
    Photos available.

    Price is £335

    Cheers.

I started mountain biking in October.
I’ve really enjoyed it so far but am well aware that I haven’t really scratched the surface.
Riding from Winchester to Brighton will be a major adventure for me.
I’m not being defeatist, in the scope of my own challenge I am going the whole way, but it makes sense for me to ‘bail’ from the main mission at Brighton.

As Psychle says ‘It’s just a ride’.
I am sure it’ll be a fun ride, and hard in bits.
I’m really looking forward to it, my map arrived today.

Hamax Siesta. Have got two. 1st boy was in at 6 months and still using now, 3 years later.
Partly ‘suspended’ mounting bars gives a very comfy ride for bumpy tracks.
Bracket fits on my crossed and MTB despite top pull on seat tube.
    Reclineable, which is great.
Proper tamper proof buckle. Foot straps.

    I rate them.
Downer: mounting bracket on your bike is heavy/bulky, but easily removed.

    He’ll love it, get going.

Whilst I do understand that watching a ‘newbie’ bail after 20 miles would not get the day off to a great start… I am still keen to give this a go.
I can ride 100 miles a day solo on my road bikes and am generally fairly fit (for a sleep-deprived 37 year old father of two young-uns).
I’ll carry a map, be self-sufficient and promise not to constantly say “are we nearly there yet?”

I have somewhere to stay in Winch and will probably exit at Brighton, depending on legs/brain.
Day off work is booked so what do you think… can I join in?

I’d like to do this, or at least as much of it as I can.

I’m new to Singletrack, to off road riding and all this madness, so hello!

My name is Barney. I built up my first bike in October (an Inbred) and have since also got a Boardman FS. I’ve never ridden either of them for more than 2 hours in one go, so perhaps this adventure is a bit crazy…?

But then, what does crazy mean these days?

Weight forward and a decent front tyre (as mentioned above) is key.
Accelerating through the corner sounds counter-intuitive, but helps on this style of bike.

Do the same corner at the same speed as a test, 1st on neutral throttle, 2nd accelerate gently from pre-apex the whole way round.

    Massive difference.

    It’s going to be good.

Going to try some SL jobbies.
Been getting foot pain after 50 fast miles and have tried everything I can to stay with SPD but seems time to try the proper road platforms.
Will probably fall over walking to the bike but hey.

I met a guy powering up a brutal climb in the Alps last June.
He was 67. Strong as a bull. He’ll be riding for another twenty years.
Probably best to ‘keep calm and carry on’.

Ditto BigG. Also just got one and love it.
I’ve put on tubeless tyres, lock-on grips, real pedals and swapped the sadddle (all bits from STW).
It is now my best bike in the World.

This might seem weirdly rural but it works great in town
    1 – mount a compass on the stem/bar
2 – clock approximate distance and bearing between A and B
3 – wiggle through back streets taking turns that keep you vaguely on course
4 – stop to look at map when you’ve covered approximate time/distance

    Mostly you will find that when you stop, you are;
    A- not dead
    B – fairly near where B is.

swobo LS merino jersey from ‘charlie the bike monger’ or ‘stif.
or Ibex shak (no rear pockets but excellent quality – had one for 6 years).

    http://www.alwaysriding.co.uk/ibex-shak-full-zip-jersey-843.html?zenid=hofmmk02g9led3a9uhge0i0ha1

both above are quality – thousands of miles and washes… expensive but worth it.

‘blaggers’ – thanks but I need 100mm or less.

If there are any Rebas out that as suggested by PPoddy

Haven’t had the valve-shredding, that sounds boring.
I’m gonna try upping the pressure first and if I still get a flat every third ride I’ll take on the tubeless epic.
It scares me though… so much fiddling (but as above, at least I can do it in my shed).

    Thanks all.

‘First Bike’ with lowering kit gave the lowest seat of all the toddler ‘steering-restricted ‘ balance bikes I could find.

Here’s a movie of my boy on his when he was 20 months old…

Got my nipper a ‘First Bike’, a GRP balance bike which is lighter and much cheaper than the Like-A-Bikes (wooden).
It has ‘restricted steering’ which is key (without this they over-steer and wipeout a lot).
Depending on height of your daughter I suggest also getting a ‘lowering kit’ which drops back wheel even further for better stand-over.

It’s a great product. My boy’s been loving it & the missus is a fan coz it’s light enough to strap to buggy.
    Highly recommend it.
